NASHVILLE – Predators coach Barry Trotz said he recently has been in touch with Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan, considered the last remaining prime unrestricted free agent on the market.

Trotz was an assistant coach for the Canadian world championships team on which Doan was a player.

"I've been in contact with Shane Doan almost a month now. I keep in contact with him," Trotz said. "To be quite honest, I hope everything gets resolved in Phoenix and he retires as a Phoenix Coyote, but if it doesn't, I know Nashville is on his short list."

Last week, general manager David Poile said the Predators had interest in Doan, but they didn't expect him to visit because of his familiarity with Nashville.

The Arizona Republic has reported Doan has visited the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers, and the Vancouver Province said he met with Canucks officials.

Doan told TSN last weekend that he still hopes to work out a deal with the Coyotes.

Weber no-trade talks

Defenseman Shea Weber's agent, Jarrett Bousquet of Titan Sports, said the Predators and the team's captain were still having talks about a no-trade or no-movement clause.

But no such provision has been put in Weber's 14-year, $110 million contract yet.

Flames prospect charged

The Calgary Flames said prospect Michael Ferland has been charged with assault as a result of an incident in Cochrane, Alberta.

The Canadian Press reported that the victim had been knocked unconscious and suffered a fractured bone around his eye. The July 29 incident took place outside a bar.

"The organization will support Michael as he moves through the legal process," the team said in a statement.

Ferland, 20, was drafted in the fifth round in 2010. The left wing played the past three seasons for the Brandon (Manitoba) Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League.

"It upset me to hear that someone might have been hurt and I am embarrassed by these accusations, but I trust the court process and look forward to having this situation behind me as soon as possible," he said in a statement issued through his lawyer.

Around the rinks

Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford tweeted that the team is close to reaching a long-term deal with center Jeff Skinner. … The Detroit Red Wings signed 2011 draft pick Tomas Jurco to an entry-level deal.
