N.H.L. owners are very wealthy and engaged in battle with a union, so The New York Times believes it would not be surprising to find that when it comes to American electoral politics, they lean strongly Republican.
Indeed that is the case, judging from donations made by the owners of the league's 23 United States-based clubs to candidates and political parties during the current election cycle, as tracked by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Those N.H.L. owners have donated $1,006,914 to Republican campaigns and candidates and $418,185 to those of Democrats – a ratio that favors Republicans by about 2.4 to 1.
That makes the N.H.L.'s American-based owners slightly more Republican-leaning than N.F.L. owners, and substantially more so than N.B.A. owners.
Below are the club-by-club summary of political donations made to federal-level campaigns by N.H.L. owners in 2011 and 2012. The dollar figures represent net spending on either Republican or Democratic campaigns, as found by the Slap Shot blog in donor searches at the Center for Responsive Politics' Open Secrets Web site.
REPUBLICAN:
Los Angeles Kings (Anschutz, Roski) $223,200
Nashville Predators (ownership group) $105,300
San Jose Sharks (ownership group) $86,550
Carolina Hurricanes (Karmanos) $66,100
St. Louis Blues (ownership group) $65,907
Columbus Blue Jackets (McConnell) $58,100
Detroit Red Wings (Ilitch) $55,600
Rangers (Dolan) $48,800
Tampa Bay Lightning (Vinik) $33,800
Philadelphia Flyers (Snider) $22,500
Minnesota Wild (Leipold) $18,000
Chicago Blackhawks (Wirtz) $10,007
Buffalo Sabres (Pegula) $2,500
DEMOCRATIC
Washington Capitals (Leonsis) $55,800
Boston Bruins (Jacobs) $52,785
Pittsburgh Penguins (Burkle) $48,300
Florida Panthers (Viner) $39,050
Anaheim Ducks (Samueli) $12,500
Colorado Avalanche (Kroenke) $5,000
NO CONTRIBUTIONS: Islanders, Devils, Dallas Stars, Phoenix Coyotes
It is worth noting that no contributions were found for this election cycle from Gary Bettman or Bill Daly, the commissioner and deputy commissioner of the N.H.L., or from Don Fehr, the executive director of the N.H.L. Players' Association. (And of course we exclude from this study the N.H.L.'s seven Canada-based clubs, which operate under a different electoral system.)
That tilt toward Republicans by N.F.L. owners is not quite as strong at the 2.4-to-1 tilt among the N.H.L.'s American owners. And the hockey owners lean much more to the right than N.B.A. owners, who are split between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.
Included in the accounting below are all recorded contributions to national party committees, PACs and federal-level candidates. Not included is money some owners gave to their own companies to be redistributed to campaigns, and whatever anonymous donations may have been made to super PACs.
