{coyotes} Coyotes top Jets; Doan passes Hawerchuk

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Shane Doan became the franchise's all-time leading goal-scorer, and Oliver-Ekman Larsson scored the game-winner with 7:25 left in the Arizona Coyotes' 4-2 victory against the Winnipeg Jets at Gila River Arena on Thursday.

Viktor Tikhonov also scored for the Coyotes (18-16-3), who are in second place in the Pacific Division.

Adam Lowry scored each Winnipeg goal.

Two of Arizona's three third-period goals came on the power play. With Tyler Myers in the box for delivering a punch to Tobias Rieder, Ekman-Larsson used a Doan screen in front to beat Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck on the stick side.

It was Ekman-Larsson's 10th goal and his fifth game-winner.

Arizona goalie Louis Domingue made 35 saves for his third win in four starts this season. He made big saves on Blake Wheeler in the second and third period and against Drew Stafford in tight in the final minute.

The Coyotes won for the eighth time in their past 12 home games (8-2-2).

Hellebuyck made 17 saves for the Jets (17-18-2), who have lost 12 of their past 13 road games, 11 of them in regulation.

Doan tied the game 1-1 and passed Dale Hawerchuk for the most goals in Winnipeg Jets/Coyotes franchise history with the 380th goal of his NHL career, all with Winnipeg/Arizona, at 9:28 of the first period.

He scored goal No. 381, his 13th of the season and fifth in the past two games into an empty net with 15.7 seconds left

Doan passed Hawerchuk in his 1,422 NHL game, which is 29th on the League's all-time list.

Winnipeg got on the board first with a good second effort.

Domingue made a save on a long shot from Dustin Byfuglien and stopped a rebound try by Alexander Burmistrov. Domingue thought he had the puck pinned under his pad, but play continued, and Lowry whacked the puck free and into the net for his second goal of the season at 3:31.

Almost six minutes later, Nicklas Grossmann sent Doan and Max Domi down the ice 2-on-1 against Byfuglien. Doan passed the puck by a sprawling Byfuglein, but Domi passed up the shot and gave Doan half a net to shoot at in beating Hellebuyck.

"I got it to Max and I thought he should have shot it," Doan told Fox Sports Arizona between periods. "Then he passed it back, and I figured out what he was doing and I figured I'd better bury it."

Doan's record goal tied him with Mikkel Boedker for the Coyotes lead this season. It was his sixth in the past five games and his eighth in his past 10. Doan enjoys playing against Winnipeg: He has four goals and nine points in his past five games and eight goals and 20 points in 22 career games against the second iteration of the Jets.

Doan passed Hawerchuk for the franchise record on the Coyotes' second shot of the game; they had six more over the next 24 minutes. Rieder missed half an empty net with a rebound try just before the first-period buzzer, and they didn't have another good chance until Hellebuyck stopped Rieder in tight with 3:30 left in the second period.

The Jets outshot the Coyotes 29-11 through two periods, but Domingue kept Arizona in the game with a string of steady saves and two strong ones, stopping Wheeler on a shorthanded breakaway with eight minutes left.

But the Jets gave the Coyotes a golden opportunity in the final seconds of the period. Behind the play with the clock winding down, Andrew Ladd put a two-handed crosscheck into Ekman-Larsson's back, giving Arizona a power play to open the third.

Connor Murphy set up Michael Stone for a shot from the point that hit Tikhonov in the slot and dropped at his feet. Tikhonov put a shot off the glove of Hellebuyck and in at 1:18 for his second goal of the season.

A miscue by Domingue allowed Winnipeg to tie it at 7:45. Stopping a dump-in with his glove, Domingue tried to send the puck up the middle of the ice and instead put it on the stick of Lowry in the high slot. Lowry beat Domingue over the glove.

{coyotes} Coyotes captain Doan sets franchise record for goals

Shane Doan set a record for goals for the Winnipeg Jets/Arizona Coyotes franchise when he scored No. 380 in the first period Thursday at Gila River Arena.

Doan, the Coyotes captain, scored 9:28 into the period against the second iteration of the Jets to break a tie with Dale Hawerchuk.

"It's a special thing because of who Dale Hawerchuk is and what kind of player he was," Doan said this week. "But let's be honest: He got his 379 in half as many games (713). It took me a lot longer to catch up to him."

Doan played his 1,422nd game Thursday, all with Winnipeg/Arizona. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 7, 1995, with Winnipeg, playing one season there before the franchise moved and became the Phoenix Coyotes.

Doan scored No. 381 into an empty net with 15.7 seconds remaining in Arizona's 4-2 win.

Hawerchuk last played for Winnipeg in the 1989-90 season (his ninth) and finished his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers. He scored 518 goals in 1,188 games.

"When you play the game, you play hard, you compete and you want to win every night," Hawerchuk said. "If there are some records along the way, that's great, but it's not why you're there.

"Now that it's come to fruition for him, I'm so happy for Shane because he's such a great guy and he has been a part of that franchise for so long."

Fans who didn't have a chance to celebrate Doan's hat trick Tuesday (completed with 20 seconds left in a 7-5 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks) threw hundreds of hats on the ice at the end of warmups Thursday.

Doan, as usual, was the last one on the ice; he thanked the crowd, picked up a cowboy hat and wore it off the ice.

{coyotes} Coyotes' Doan one goal shy of franchise record

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- On Nov. 14, 1995, 19-year-old rookie Shane Doan was sitting on the bench in Winnipeg Arena during a game between his Jets and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Doan was 17 games and two periods into his NHL career, and seriously assessing whether he was in the right place.

"We were losing 4-2, and I was terrible," Doan said. "I remember sitting on the bench questioning if I could play (in the NHL). I had gone 17 games without a goal. Confidence was pretty low."

Doan jumped out for his next shift and suddenly was rushing up the ice all alone against two Chicago defensemen, future Hockey Hall of Fame member Chris Chelios and future U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Gary Suter.

Doan cut across the blue line and took a half-slap shot against the grain that hit the post behind another Hockey Hall of Fame member, goalie Ed Belfour, and caromed into the net.

"I wasn't very excited because we were still down 4-3 and there was only about five minutes left," Doan said. "But Teemu Selanne scored with 18 seconds left to tie the game."

Doan finished the game with his second NHL goal, in overtime, and his questions were answered once and for all.

"It was OK to get excited then," he said.

The Arizona Coyotes' longtime captain had the second hat trick of his NHL career Tuesday in a 7-5 loss to the Blackhawks that didn't allow for much celebration.

The third goal, meaningless in the game because Arizona was trailing by two with less than 30 seconds to play, was significant in other ways. It was the 379th of his NHL career, tying Hockey Hall of Fame member Dale Hawerchuk for the Jets/Coyotes franchise record.

On Thursday, fittingly against the reborn Winnipeg Jets, at Gila River Arena, where Hawerchuk's number hangs in the Ring of Honor, Doan has a chance to ring in the New Year with No. 380.

"It's a special thing because who Dale Hawerchuk is and what kind of player he was," Doan said. "But let's be honest: He got his 379 in half as many games (713). It took me a lot longer to catch up to him."

And that journey is one of perseverance and loyalty, one that has endeared him to Arizona sports fans like few others before him. Through ownership changes, roster turnovers and rebuilding efforts, Doan has remained the face of the Coyotes, always committed to the fans and the idea of hockey in the desert.

In an area with elite players like Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, and Paul Goldschmidt of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, it was Doan who received 70 percent of the vote in an Arizona Republic poll asking readers to identify the most popular sports figure.

"When I heard about it -- and my friends made sure I did hear about it -- my first thought was, 'Pretty humorous,'" Doan said. "I've taken a lot of ribbing. I've been around longer than most of them put together, and all of it here. I'm sure the longevity helps. I can tell you I would have picked those guys before me."

But the fans picked Doan. And everyone from the man who's coached him for six-plus seasons to the player who's record he's about to break understands why.

Mention how long it took for Doan to reach Hawerchuk's record, and Coyotes coach Dave Tippett scoffs.

"You can look at that the other way and talk about his incredible longevity," Tippett said. "To get those numbers, you have to do something right and play a long time. The number is there. He did it, and that speaks volumes."

Doan will play in his 1,422nd NHL game Thursday. That's 29th on the League's all-time list. By the end of January, if he stays healthy, Doan will be among the top 25. And if he can squeeze another season out at the age of 40, he will crack the top 15.

"The game is moving quicker and quicker, and Shane's getting older and older. Those two factors usually don't equate," Tippett said. "But when you see how he's played since coming back from injury (five goals and six points in the past four games), he's been a good player for us."

For Tippett, goal No. 379 was vintage Doan: Never giving up, even when the score and the odds are against you.

"It's an unbelievable sacrifice he makes and the leadership he shows that when a game is out of hand, he's not going to quit," Tippett said. "That's a great lesson for our guys in the lineup."

Hawerchuk won't be watching the Jets-Coyotes game Thursday. He coaches Barrie of the Ontario Hockey League, and they will be playing Sudbury while Doan goes for No. 380. But he's been watching and admiring Doan for two decades.

"When you play the game, you play hard, you compete and you want to win every night," Hawerchuk said. "If there are some records along the way, that's great, but it's not why you're there. Now that it's come to fruition for him, I'm so happy for Shane because he's such a great guy and he has been a part of that franchise for so long.

"As a coach in juniors, you want your players to handle themselves the way Shane does."

After Thursday, the Coyotes play three straight road games before beginning a seven-game homestand Jan. 9.

JETS (17-17-2) at COYOTES (17-16-3)

TV: TSN3, FS-A PLUS

Season series: Chris Thorburn scored shorthanded with 8:51 remaining in the third period to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 3-2 win against the Arizona Coyotes at MTS Centre on Nov. 21. Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec sustained a knee injury in a collision with Arizona forward Shane Doan and left the game. He has not played since.

Jets team scope: Center Mark Scheifele (concussion) skated as a non-contact player in practice Wednesday and will make the trip, the Winnipeg Sun reported. "I feel good," Scheifele told the Jets website. "I'm going through the [concussion] protocol, feeling better each and every day. Hopefully, I can be back soon." Winnipeg starts a five-game road trip having lost 11 of its past 12 road games. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who has allowed one goal in his past two games, is expected to start for the eighth time in the past nine games. The trip continues Saturday against the San Jose Sharks.

Coyotes team scope: Doan is one goal away from passing Dale Hawerchuk for the all-time franchise record. Doan, who began his NHL career in 1995-1996 with the original Winnipeg Jets franchise, tied Hawerchuk at 379 goals with a hat trick in a 7-5 home loss against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. Coach Dave Tippett said that defensemen Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Zbynek Michalek, who each sustained a minor injury Tuesday, are expected to play. Tippett also said goaltender Louis Domingue will start, according to the Coyotes website. Domingue replaced starter Anders Lindback against Chicago. Arizona has allowed five or more goals in seven of the past 13 games. After completing a stretch of eight of nine games at home in December, Arizona will start a three-game Western Canada road trip Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers.

{coyotes} Kane, Desjardins help Blackhawks outscore Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists, and the Chicago Blackhawks rediscovered their scoring touch in a 7-5 victory against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Tuesday.

Andrew Desjardins scored two goals and Duncan Keith, Artem Anisimov and Artemi Panarin each scored power-play goals in the first period for the Blackhawks (21-13-4). Chicago had scored a total of one goal in back-to-back losses to the Dallas Stars and Carolina Hurricanes but won for the seventh time in their past eight trips to Arizona, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Kane assisted on the goals by Keith and Anisimov and added his 22nd of the season in the second period. He has an NHL-leading 53 points and trails Jamie Benn of the Stars by one in the goal-scoring race. Jonathan Toews also scored into an empty net for Chicago with 1:39 remaining.

Arizona captain Shane Doan completed the second hat trick of his career and tied Dale Hawerchuk for the all-time franchise record with his 379th career goal when he scored a power-play goal with 27.1 seconds remaining. Zbynek Michalek and Connor Murphy also scored for the Coyotes (17-16-3).

Chicago's Corey Crawford made 32 saves to win for the 19th time this season.

Arizona starter Anders Lindback allowed three goals on five shots in the first period before giving way to backup Louis Domingue, who made 18 saves in relief.

The Blackhawks had one even-strength shot and were outshot 12-5 in the first period. But that didn't keep Chicago from scoring three times on the power play and leaving the ice with a 3-2 lead.

Arizona's Anthony Duclair hooked Kane 4:31 into the game and Chicago's power play went to work. Kane gained the line with speed and dropped a backhand pass to Keith, who put a one-timer past Lindback's glove from the left circle for his sixth goal at 6:21.

Murphy went to the box 33 seconds later and the Blackhawks needed two shots to double their lead. Kane fed defenseman Brent Seabrook in the high slot; his shot was deflected in front by Anisimov and went past Lindback at 7:36 to make it 2-0.

But Arizona got back into the game at 10:18 with the help of a friendly bounce. Doan flipped a shot from the blue line that took one big hop and went over Crawford's glove.

The Coyotes tied the game 1:49 later. Oliver Ekman-Larsson made a pass from behind the net and Michalek put the shot off the far post and past Crawford at 12:07. It was the 24th goal in 36 games by Arizona defenseman, who have scored in 13 of the past 18 games.

But another Arizona penalty opened the door to a third Chicago power-play goal. With Michalek in the box, Panarin whacked a Seabrook feed from the high slot past Lindback and under the crossbar at 19:08 to put Chicago ahead to stay.

It was the seventh goal allowed by the Coyotes' penalty kill in its past 14 chances.

Domingue replaced Lindback to start the second period.

Chicago needed two minutes of the second period to stretch the lead. But Chicago scored again two minutes into the period when Teuvo Teravainen dropped a pass to Desjardins for an innocent-looking wrist shot from the top of the right circle that squeezed under Domingue's glove and pad.

Kane gave Chicago a three-goal lead at 7:08 when he took a pass from Andrew Shaw and hit a wide-open net. Desjardins made it 6-2 at 5:04 of the third period. Domingue made the save on his shot but the rebound bounded off of Arizona defenseman Nicklas Grossmann and into the net for his third goal of the year and second of the night.

Doan got his second of the night on the power play at 7:17 and Murphy made it 6-4 just after another power play expired with a shot off the post at 13:03.

{coyotes} Coyotes' Dauphin to make NHL debut vs. Blackhawks

BLACKHAWKS (20-13-4) AT COYOTES (17-15-3)

TV: CSN-CH, FS-A

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – With centers Martin Hanzal and Boyd Gordon still out of the lineup, the Arizona Coyotes will give rookie center Laurent Dauphin a chance to make his NHL debut against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

Dauphin, the 39th pick of the 2013 NHL Draft, had 10 points in 30 games with Springfield of the American Hockey League before being recalled Monday with forward Craig Cunningham. They will join Kyle Chipchura on the fourth line against the Blackhawks.

"We'll throw him in with Gordon and Hanzal out," Arizona coach Dave Tippett said. "He's played well and he's one of the good prospects we've had down there this year so we'll see what he can do.

"His quickness, skating, ability to read plays quickly are reasons why we made the move. Playing against the Stanley Cup champions, that's a good start for him."

Gordon will miss his second straight game after sustaining an upper-body injury in a nasty collision with Jake Muzzin of the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Tippett said Gordon could be ready to play by the weekend. He was also encouraged by the way Hanzal looked Tuesday, calling it "a positive sign." Hanzal will miss his 10th game of the season with an upper-body injury which has kept him out much of the past three weeks.

Anders Lindback will start in goal for Arizona after playing well in the 2-1 overtime win against the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. The Coyotes took three of four points in the past two games coming out of the Christmas break and are 7-1-2 in their past 10 games at Gila River Arena.

Looking for more offense after scoring once in losses to the Dallas Stars (4-0) and Carolina Hurricanes (2-1), Chicago coach Joel Quenneville shook up three of his four forward lines and recalled defenseman Erik Gustafsson from Rockford of the American Hockey League while placing David Rundblad on waivers.

Andrew Shaw will move back to the top line with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa, with Teuvo Teravainen dropping to the third line. Teravainen will skate with Andres Desjardins and Phillip Danault, who were promoted to the third line with Bryan Bickell and Dennis Rasmussen now skating with Ryan Garbutt on the fourth line.

The Coyotes have three players – centers Antoine Vermette and Viktor Tikhonov and defenseman Klas Dahlbeck – who were all members of the Blackhawks within the past year.

Vermette was traded to Chicago, where he won a Stanley Cup, for Dahlbeck and the 30th overall pick in the 2015 draft which the Coyotes used to select forward Nick Merkley.

Vermette then returned to Arizona as a free agent in the offseason. Tikhonov was claimed on waivers earlier this month.

Dahlbeck has started all 36 games for Arizona on defense this year.

"He wanted an opportunity to play in the league and we've given him that," Tippett said. "He's still a young payer and there's lots of growing in his game but he's been good for us."

Here are the projected lineups:

BLACKHAWKS

Andrew Shaw - Jonathan Toews - Marian Hossa

Artemi Panarin - Artem Anisimov - Patrick Kane

Andrew Desjardins - Phillip Danault - Teuvo Teravainen

Bryan Bickell - Dennis Rasmussen - Ryan Garbutt

Duncan Keith - Trevor Van Riemsdyk

Niklas Hjalmarsson - Brent Seabrook

Rob ScuderiErik Gustafsson

Corey Crawford

Scott Darling

Injured: Marcus Kruger (left wrist)

Scratched: Michal Rozsival, David Rundblad, Brandon Mashinter

COYOTES

Tobias Rieder - Viktor Tikhonov - Anthony Duclair

Jordan Martinook - Brad Richardson - Shane Doan

Kyle Chipchura - Laurent DauphinCraig Cunningham

Oliver Ekman-Larsson - Connor Murphy

Nicklas Grossman - Michael Stone

Anders Lindback

Louis Domingue

Injured: Boyd Gordon (head), Martin Hanzal (lower body), Mike Smith (abdominal surgery), Joe Vitale (fractured orbital bone)

Scratched: Steve Downie, Stefan Elliott, John Scott

Status report: Tippett will continue his "Win and you're in" credo and start Lindback over Louis Domingue. Lindback has lost his past three starts against Chicago, posting a 4.69 goals-against average, all with the Buffalo Sabres.

Who's hot: Chicago has won six of the past seven games in Arizona, including playoffs. Crawford is 2-1-1 with a 2.18 GAA in his past four games against the Coyotes.

BLACKHAWKS (20-13-4) AT COYOTES (17-15-3)

TV: CSN-CH, FS-A

Season series: The Chicago Blackhawks went 2-0-1 against the Phoenix Coyotes last season, losing 3-2 in a shootout at United Center on Feb. 9. The deciding goal in the shootout was scored by center Antoine Vermette, who was later traded to the Blackhawks and helped them win the Stanley Cup. Vermette scored in the third period of that game as well. Forward Andrew Shaw led Chicago with three goals in the three games.

Blackhawks team scope: Chicago, which has lost its past two games, recalled rookie defenseman Erik Gustafsson from Rockford of the American Hockey League on Monday. The Blackhawks also placed center Marcus Kruger (left wrist fracture) on injured reserve and reportedly placed defenseman David Rundblad on waivers. Coach Joel Quenneville said the plan is to use Gustafsson regularly on the third defense pairing with either Michal Rozsival or Rob Scuderi. "It's a situation more so that we want to get [Gustafsson here], give him a chance to play, and see what happens with David," Quenneville said. Quenneville also shook up his forward lines at practice Monday. Shaw replaced Teuvo Teravainen at left wing on the top line. Teravainen moved to right wing on the third line. Rookie center Phillip Danault was promoted to the third line along with left wing Andrew Desjardins. Left wing Bryan Bickell moved to the fourth line along with rookie center Dennis Rasmussen. Quenneville did not name a starting goalie.

Coyotes team scope: Goalie Anders Lindback will start his second straight game for Arizona after making 38 saves in a 2-1 overtime win at the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. Forward Steve Downie (upper body) practiced Monday and is questionable after leaving in the second period against the Avalanche. Centers Martin Hanzal (lower body) and Boyd Gordon (upper body) are out, and are each considered day-to-day. Defenseman Zbynek Michalek (lower body) missed the game against Colorado. Vermette, defenseman Klas Dahlbeck and forward Viktor Tikhonov each have ties to the Blackhawks. Vermette, who has 199 NHL goals, made a good impression on the defending Stanley Cup champions. "He became a special part of the team so quickly," Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. "It was nice for us to get the result we wanted at the end of the year and it sounds like he's doing well back in Phoenix."

Many thanks Carl. They were both there on October 25th and were as you described below.

Hi Roy

They nearly caught me out. I should of said that the stuff in brackets did NOT carry a reg or it was painted out. When i started my research on the ANA painted A320. I came across two JA- 320's that arrived there earlier this year. I thought i'd be stuck until i googled imaged and Flickr both. JA8391 as you will see had vanilla transfers on (not in ANA scheme) that were taken of and it now sits in near the other ANA all white with a grey bottom. It may of been there in Oct  when you were there and unidentified. I also asked on civil-spotters to ask the same question and got the correct replies. Luckly i didn't fancy the job of id ANA 763's at VCV ( someone else did that ☺ )

HTH

Regards

Carl

I'm curious how you identified the ex ANA A320's? There was only one here in basic ANA livery in late October and it had nothing on it to identify the aircraft.

Thanks,

Roy

American MD-80's, Delta MD90 were in service as were Fedex 76F, N685SW and the biz. All others were parked up, wfu or in maintence at Bombardier. Some nice stuff here.
