GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Anze Kopitar scored a shorthanded goal 36 seconds into overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings and 4-3 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena Saturday.
The Kings (21-11-2) have rallied to win five times when trailing after two periods this season, most in the NHL.
The Coyotes led 1-0 heading to a wild third-period that saw the Kings score three times in the first 5:46 to take a 3-1 lead, before the Coyotes came back with power-play goals 30 seconds apart to tie it, 3-3.
The Coyotes (16-15-3) got power-play two goals from Oliver Ekman-Larsson and 29 saves from Louis Domingue. But Arizona took six consecutive minor penalties in the second and third periods and the Kings capitalized going 2-for-6 on the power play.
Drew Doughty, Tanner Pearson and Dustin Brown each scored for Los Angeles. Jonathan Quick made 23 saves for the Kings.
Los Angeles defenseman Jake Muzzin was issued a five-minute major and match penalty for a hit to the head of Arizona center Boyd Gordon at 13:20, which became a 5-on-3 advantage when Alec Martinez shot the puck over the glass for a delay of game.
Antoine Vermette deflected home a Michael Stone shot with the two-man advantage at 16:07 to make it 3-2. Ekman-Larson followed 30 seconds later 5-on-4, sending a wrist shot through traffic at 16:37 to tie the game.
Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff was a healthy scratch for the Kings. Forward Jeff Carter left the game with an upper-body injury in the first period and did not return.
The Coyotes had three power-play opportunities in the first period and capitalized on the first of two Milan Lucic penalties to take a 1-0 lead.
Ekman-Larsson took Mikkel Boedker's pass in the high point and waited for Shane Doan to set a screen in the slot. Quick wasn't able to track the wrist shot which found the far corner at 9:43.
Quick made three big saves in succession on the final Arizona power play of the period, stopping Ekman-Larsson from the outside and Viktor Tikhonov in tight before scrambling with his outstretched paddle to deny a spinning Maxi Domi shot.
With Brad Richardson in the box for a delay of game penalty, Martinez found Doughty at the left face-off dot with a cross-ice pass and Doughty wound up for a shot that Domingue got a piece of but couldn't stop at 37 seconds. Doughty's sixth goal of the season was his second on the past four games.
Pearson scored at 4:17 to give the Kings a 2-1 lead.
Brown made it 3-1 after Nicklas Grossman took a slashing penalty for Arizona, taking a feed from Nick Shore to beat Domingue for his third goal of the year at 6:23.
