{coyotes} Hurricanes blow lead, top Coyotes on Rask's OT goal

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Carolina Hurricanes blew a three-goal third-period lead, but Victor Rask scored 53 seconds into overtime to give them a 5-4 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Saturday.

The Hurricanes took a 4-1 lead 40 seconds into the third when defenseman Justin Faulk scored his NHL-leading 12th power-play goal.

The Coyotes stormed back with goals by Anthony Duclair and Kyle Chipchura 2:40 apart. After Carolina forwards Elias Lindholm and Eric Staal each missed a chance at an empty net, Arizona defenseman Connor Murphy scored from between the circles with 15.7 seconds left in regulation to tie it 4-4.

Rask won the game with a wrist shot from between the circles that got past Arizona goalie Anders Lindback. The goal was upheld after a coach's challenge.

Hurricanes forwards Kris Versteeg and Andrej Nestrasil each scored in the first period, and Phillip Di Giuseppe scored his second NHL goal to build a 3-0 lead for the Hurricanes (12-14-4).

Goalie Eddie Lack made 24 saves for his second win in as many nights and third of the season. Carolina had eight wins in its first 25 games but has scored 23 goals in winning four of its past five.

Duclair scored two goals, and Max Domi had two assists for the Coyotes (14-14-2), who had their five-game home winning streak end and lost for the fifth time in the past six games.

Lindback, who denied Jeff Skinner on a penalty shot 5:16 into the game, made 28 saves. He allowed 10 goals in two losses (0-1-1) to Carolina in seven days.

After Carolina's Ron Hainsey hit Lindback in the mask with a slap shot, Lindholm ran down the rebound behind the Arizona net. Lindholm found Faulk along the boards, and Faulk's wrist shot deflected off Versteeg and past Lindback at 8:37.

The Hurricanes doubled their lead late in the first after Arizona's Jordan Martinook was called for a delay of game for putting the puck over the glass. Lindback made a big save on a Brett Pesce shot, but Jordan Staal chased down the rebound and set up Nestrasil with a nifty pass across the crease to give him half a net to shoot at with 3.7 seconds left.

Carolina made it 3-0 at 15:24 of the second period when Jaccob Slavin sent Skinner and Di Giuseppe down the ice 2-on-1. Skinner maneuvered around Arizona defenseman Klas Dahlbeck and centered a puck that Di Giuseppe banged home at the far post. Di Giuseppe has two goals and an assist in his first five NHL games.

The Coyotes pulled to within 3-1 at 18:22 of the second, with Max Domi forcing a turnover at center ice and finding the trailing Duclair in the high slot for a wrist shot past Lack. Duclair's ninth goal of the season was his first in nine games.

Carolina regained its three-goal lead 40 seconds into the third period when Faulk pounded a Lindholm feed off the post and past Lindback for his 12 th goal, all of them on the power play, to make it 4-1.

Arizona needed 1:03 to answer. Viktor Tikhonov sent Duclair down the ice with a long pass, and Duclair pushed the puck in with Carolina defenseman Noah Hanifin draped all over him to make it 4-2. Then at 3:23, Chipchura was waiting for a Nicklas Grossmann rebound in the left circle and beak Lack to the short side to pull the Coyotes within a goal.
