{coyotes} Coyotes' Domingue gets first shutout vs. Islanders

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Louis Domingue made 25 saves for his first career shutout in the Arizona Coyotes' 1-0 win against the New York Islanders at Gila River Arena on Saturday.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored the only goal of the game 17:59 into the first period for the Coyotes, who allowed 37 goals in the previous eight games and seven to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.

It was the 20th career game-winning goal for Ekman-Larsson, who passed Teppo Numminen for the franchise lead among defensemen in that category.

The Coyotes are 8-5-1 in 14 home games; they won 11 games at Gila River Arena last season (11-25-5).

Jaroslav Halak made 28 saves for the Islanders. New York has two goals in its past 10 periods, both by forward Brock Nelson. It was the first time they have been shut out this season.

Domingue, who was Arizona's fifth-round pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, was recalled from Springfield of the American Hockey League on Dec. 11 when Mike Smith had abdominal surgery. He was given the start when Anders Lindback came down with the flu.

The Coyotes, who allowed at least five goals in six of their past eight games, played a strong defensive game from the outset. They held the Islanders to eight harmless shots in the first period and grabbed the lead at 17:59.

Cycling the puck in the left corner, Anthony Duclair found Ekman-Larsson at the top of the circle with a backhand pass that had the puck on-edge. Ekman-Larsson one-timed the puck past Halak for his seventh goal.

Domingue made the biggest save in the second period when he denied Islanders center Casey Cizikas on a shorthanded breakaway at 2:23. He made nice saves on Thomas Hickey and Anders Lee in succession with 13 minutes left and the Coyotes took the one-goal lead into the third period.

Halak kept the game close with a good save against Mikkel Boedker, who tried to put in the rebound of his own blocked shot with 14:56 left.

Arizona captain Shane Doan played in his 1,416th game on Saturday, passing Al MacInnis for 30th place on the NHL's all-time list.
