Season series: The Detroit Red Wings and Arizona Coyotes split two games last season. Goaltender Mike Smith started twice for the Coyotes, stopping 56 of 62 shots. Forward Tomas Tatar had two goals and an assist in the Red Wings' 3-1 win in early February. Forwards David Moss and Mark Arcobello each had two goals for the Coyotes in their 5-4 overtime win in March.

Coyotes team scope: Captain Shane Doan did not play in Arizona's 5-2 loss at the Nashville Predators on Tuesday despite traveling with the team. The Coyotes are on the second game of a five-game road trip during which Doan is expected to return from a lower-body injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the past four games. Forward Steve Downie is also likely to return soon after missing the last 10 games with an upper-body injury. "Both have practiced again. I would say that we'll revisit it again [Thursday morning], but there's a chance that at least one of them will play tomorrow," coach Dave Tippett told the Coyotes' website Wednesday. Arizona was outshot 41-15 in the loss at Nashville, snapping its three-game winning streak.

Red Wings team scope: Detroit had a scheduled day off Wednesday after defeating the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 in a shootout on Tuesday. The Red Wings have points in eight straight games, going 5-0-3 in that span, their longest such streak since going 12-0-2 late in the 2009-10 season. Seven of the eight games went past regulation. "It hasn't been great every night but through this stretch of games it's been really good," coach Jeff Blashill told the Red Wings' website after the win. "I thought our process tonight was pretty good in a lot of ways." The Red Wings have averaged three goals per game in their last eight. Goaltender Jimmy Howard is expected to start after Petr Mrazek allowed four goals against the Sabres.
