The NHL postseason, in its first year of being nationally televised in its entirety, is getting some pretty good early TV box office.
NBC's Pittsburgh-Philadelphia game Sunday drew a 2.3 overnight rating -- translating into 2.3% in the 56 urban TV markets measured for overnights -- which is up 77% from comparable coverage of a Washington-N.Y. Rangers game last year. (By comparison, ABC's Dallas-L.A. Lakers NBA game Sunday got a 3.6% overnight while Fox's NASCAR Sprint Cup Saturday also got a 3.6%)
NBC's 2.3% after NBC's Washington-Boston game Saturday drew a 1.5 overnight -- up 36% from last year's comparable playoff coverage -- and the NBC Sports Network coverage saw ratings gains of 22% in its first two days of its playoff coverage.
What's semi-surprising: As all playoff games are aired nationally -- on NBC, its NBCSN and CNBC cable channels or on the NHL Network -- total viewing should go up, but individual game ratings might go down because hockey viewers are being pulled in more on-air directions.
