{coyotes} NHL informs union it won't terminate labor deal

Citing what it called momentum from a sustained period of labor peace, the NHL said Friday it has informed the NHL Players' Association it will not use its option to terminate the existing collective bargaining agreement next year.

The league announced its decision two days before its deadline to notify the union whether it would reopen collective bargaining talks. The union has until Sept. 15 to decide on whether to terminate the agreement as of September 2020, two years before the existing deal expires.

''We will continue to discuss this matter with our players as our September 15 decision approaches,'' the union said.

If the players opt to reopen the CBA, it would set the clock ticking toward a potential third work stoppage in the sport since 2004. If the players choose not to terminate the agreement, it remains in effect until 2022. The next Winter Olympics are in Beijing earlier that year.

''Based on the current state of the game and the business of the game, the NHL believes it is essential to continue building upon the momentum we have created with our players,'' NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement issued by the league. ''It is our hope that a continued sustained period of labor peace will enable us to further grow the game and benefit all constituent groups.''

The players, however, have concerns, notably regarding the escrow issue, Olympic participation and the split of hockey-related revenue. The NHL and NHLPA are in agreement on wanting more international competition and are in talks about holding another World Cup of Hockey as early as February 2021.

The NHLPA executive board is scheduled to meet in Chicago on Wednesday. The league and union have been meeting through the summer and those discussions are scheduled to continue.

Escrow is a major concern for the players, according to a majority of union representatives surveyed by The Associated Press and Canadian Press last spring.

The current CBA has owners and players dividing hockey-related revenue 50/50, and if player salaries exceed that split a certain percentage is withheld in escrow to make it even. Players have complained, saying some have lost upward of 10% of their pay to escrow over the past seven seasons.

''I don't know if we're going to eliminate it,'' New Jersey Devils player rep Cory Schneider said. ''Obviously we'll figure that part out. But at least some way to mitigate it or control it better for us just to know what to expect.''

The league has countered by saying escrow is a function of the salary-cap system, with the amount of money held back being higher when the upper limit on salaries is higher.

On Friday, Bettman stressed a desire to have a cooperative approach between owners and players.

''In any CBA, the parties can always identify issues they are unhappy with and would like to see changed,'' Bettman said. ''However, our analysis makes clear that the benefits of continuing to operate under the terms of the current CBA - while working with the Players' Association to address our respective concerns - far outweigh the disruptive consequences of terminating it following the upcoming season.''

{coyotes} Aug. 30: Poile hired as general manager by Capitals

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Aug. 30

1982: The Washington Capitals, who have yet to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs since entering the NHL in 1974, hire 32-year-old David Poile as their general manager.

Poile, who's been an assistant GM with the Calgary Flames, wastes no time making changes; he acquires future Hall of Fame defenseman Rod Langway in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 9. With Langway winning the Norris Trophy in each of his first two seasons in Washington, Poile assembles a team that makes the playoffs in 1983 and every season through 1996. The Capitals miss the playoffs in 1997 and Poile is fired, though the team he put together rebounds one season later to advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time. The Capitals go 594-454 with 132 ties during Poile's 15 seasons and win their first division title (in 1988-89).

Poile isn't out of work for long after being let go by the Capitals; he's quickly hired as the first GM of the expansion Nashville Predators.

MORE MOMENTS

1994: Kirk Muller is named the 20th captain in the history of the Montreal Canadiens. The move comes 11 days after Guy Carbonneau is traded to the St. Louis Blues, ending his five-season run as captain. Muller's tenure is much shorter; he's traded to the New York Islanders on April 5, 1995.

2013: Teemu Selanne signs a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks and announces that 2013-14 will be his 21st and last season in the NHL. His announcement comes in a humorous video confirming he'll be back for one more run at another Stanley Cup title. He says he also hopes to play for Finland in his record sixth Winter in February 2014.

2017: Longtime Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan announces his retirement after 21 seasons with the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise. Doan makes his NHL debut with the Jets in 1995-96, their final season in Winnipeg, then becomes the face of the franchise after the move to Arizona. He's named captain in 2003. Doan retires as the Coyotes/Jets all-time leader in goals (402), assists (570) and points (972). His 1,540 games are tied with Johnny Bucyk for 14th all-time. The Coyotes retire his No. 19 on Feb. 24, 2019.

{coyotes} Hockey's ultimate journeyman goalie calls it a career

Mike McKenna isn't sure where to start on the craziest stories from his long and winding road of a career.

''We could be here forever,'' he said. ''I mean, do you want to talk about me, or do you want to talk about when the bus caught on fire? Or do you want to talk about swiping a Volvo on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge? These are things that have happened. You can't make that up.''

McKenna's path through hockey looks stranger than fiction. The journeyman goaltender announced his retirement Tuesday after stints with 15 NHL organizations and 22 professional teams in all, enough material to fill a novel.

''I never expected this, and it turned into my career path and that's just the way it was,'' McKenna said in an interview during the Stanley Cup Final earlier this year. ''To me, yeah, it was crazy. There has been a lot of stops along the way. But I just made so many friends, I've been in so many places and got to experience so much, I feel like I've had a pretty full life in the game with 15 organizations to go through.''

McKenna said his eldest daughter being in school changed the equation. The 36-year-old had been open to playing another season but wanted to be rooted in one place and joked that he would've been the only No. 3 goalie in the league with a no-movement clause.

Instead, he will move on after playing 15 games for the Lightning, 10 for the Senators, four for the Blue Jackets, two each for the Stars and Devils, and one apiece for the Coyotes and Flyers. Since being a sixth-round pick of the Nashville Predators in 2002, he played in the NCAA, ECHL, American Hockey League and NHL.

McKenna spent a vast majority of that time in the AHL, which gave him some colorful stories. He thinks it's hard to top the Portland Pirates' bus catching on fire on the way to a game.

''We had a right rear (tire) blow and I don't why it happened, but something lit up a hydraulic line or something,'' McKenna said. ''Next thing you know, the right rear of the bus was on fire and the flames were licking over the side of it and our bus driver got off and told us in the middle of the road in Rhode Island or Mass or whoever we were: 'Everybody off! We're on fire!'''

McKenna and his teammates had to play that night and lost. He blames it on smoke inhalation.

So many stops along the way provided McKenna with 18 different masks, all of which he still has. The jerseys? Well, that was more difficult.

''You don't get to keep jerseys from teams. They don't give you those,'' McKenna said. ''I have most of my jerseys, and I've probably been given a jersey by a half-dozen teams I would say, but the other ones I've either had to pay for or have traded to get.''

It takes time just to list the teams he's played for professionally: Las Vegas, Norfolk, Milwaukee, Omaha, Portland, Tampa Bay, Lowell, Albany, New Jersey, Binghamton, Peoria, Springfield, Columbus, Arizona, Syracuse, Texas, Dallas, Belleville, Ottawa, Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley.

Last season, a trade and subsequent waiver claim by Philadelphia gave him three teams in four days.

''I've never done that before,'' McKenna said. ''With goalies, this can happen. You order some white gear and hope it shows up soon.''

McKenna and his family have had a house in St. Louis for a decade now and will make it home. The need for white gear and a new mask is over, but not before he could indulge in some self-professed ''dark comedy'' about bouncing around like a puck on choppy ice.

''There's probably a lot of punch lines out there associated with what I've done and you have to be able to laugh at yourself in life,'' he said.

{coyotes} Aug. 16: Price, Olczyk born

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Aug. 16

1987: Carey Price, the winningest goalie in the history of the Montreal Canadiens, is born in Anahim Lake, British Columbia.

The Canadiens select Price, a goalie, with the No. 5 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft after his second season with Tri-City of the Western Hockey League. He's named the top goalie in the WHL and the Canadian Hockey League in 2006-07, then begins his pro career by helping Hamilton, Montreal's American Hockey League affiliate, win the Calder Cup. He earns MVP honors.

Price makes the Canadiens in 2007-08, ties for the NHL lead with 38 victories in 2010-11 and has one of the greatest seasons ever by a goaltender in 2014-15, going 44-16-6 with a 1.96 goals-against average and .933 save percentage, leading the League in all three categories. He wins the Hart, Vezina and Jennings trophies and the Ted Lindsay Award, becoming the first goalie in NHL history to take home all four honors in the same season. Price also wins a gold medal with Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, allowing three goals in winning all five of his appearances.

On March 12, 2019, Price and the Canadiens defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 at Bell Centre; it's the 315th win of his career, moving him past Jacques Plante for the most in Montreal history.

MORE MOMENTS

1949: The Detroit Red Wings acquire Pete Babando, Jimmy Peters, Clare Martin and Lloyd Durham in a trade with the Boston Bruins for Bill Quackenbush and Pete Horeck. Quackenbush, a defenseman, finishes with the best career among the six players; he's elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976. But Babando makes the biggest impact because he scores the Stanley Cup-winning goal for the Red Wings in Game 7 of the 1950 Final. Babando's goal at 8:31 of the second overtime gives the Red Wings a 4-3 win against the New York Rangers. He is still the only player in NHL history to score in double overtime of Game 7 in the Cup Final.

1966: Eddie Olczyk is born in Chicago. Though known today for his role as a color commentator on NHL telecasts, Olczyk, a center, has an impressive on-ice career. After playing for the United States at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, he's taken by the hometown Chicago Blackhawks with the No. 3 pick in the 1984 NHL Draft and plays in the League as an 18-year-old, He scores 342 goals and finishes with 794 points in 1,031 NHL games during 16 seasons, ending back in Chicago with 33 games in 1999-2000. He's also a member of the Rangers' Stanley Cup-winning team in 1994.

1996: The Blackhawks trade center Jeremy Roenick to the Phoenix Coyotes for center Alexei Zhamnov, forward Craig Mills and a first-round pick in the 1997 NHL Draft. The trade comes after Roenick, a three-time 100-point scorer for the Blackhawks, drops to 67 points (32 goals, 35 assists) in 66 games in 1995-96.

Jeremy Roenick as a member of the Phoenix Coyotes.

2017: Leon Draisaitl signs an eight-year contract that will keep him with the Edmonton Oilers through the 2024-25 season. The 21-year-old Germany-born forward is coming off a season that sees him finish with NHL career highs in goals (29) and points (77), then lead the Oilers in playoff scoring with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) in 13 games. The signing comes less than two months after the Oilerslock up their other young star, center Connor McDavid, to an eight-year contract.

{coyotes} 2019 NHL/NHLPA concussion education video fact sheet

Ebates.ca - Amazon.com - Classmates - Wal-Mart - GameStop - Work From Home

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAqLHEFE4m4

What: A 13-minute video produced by NHL Studios in conjunction with the National Hockey League and NHL Players' Association created to help players, parents, coaches and team medical staff at all levels of hockey recognize the signs and symptoms of concussion and better understand how to proceed when a player is suspected to have suffered a concussion.

Who: Appearances by current and former players who have experience with concussions, team and League medical professionals and recognized experts in the field of concussion diagnosis and treatment. Including:
Pat LaFontaine, Hockey Hall of Famer
Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins Forward
Gabriel Landeskog, Colorado Avalanche Forward
Charlie McAvoy, Boston Bruins Defenseman
Mark Stone, Vegas Golden Knights Forward
Dr. Willem Meeuwisse, NHL Medical Director
Dr. Ruben Echemendia, Co-Chair NHL/NHLPA Concussion Subcommittee, Neuropsychologist

Mandi Duhamel, Former CWHL Player & Coach, Regional Director, NHL Growth Initiatives
Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, Sport Neurologist, NHLPA Consultant
Dr. John Rizos, NHLPA Medical Consultant

What they say:

Pat LaFontaine: "We have learned a lot from science but there is still a lot we don't know. What we are sure of is: If you suspect you have a concussion, you need to report your symptoms quickly and accurately."

Patrice Bergeron: "Don't be afraid to let a coach or a member of the medical staff know that you think your teammate might be dealing with some symptoms of a concussion. Because that can go a really long way with him."

Mark Stone, Vegas Golden Knights: "I didn't feel a ton of symptoms right away. But, the next day, I was definitely thankful that they pulled me out of activity."

Gabriel Landeskog, Colorado Avalanche: "I think honesty is the No. 1 thing, the No. 1 step in recovery, really. Honesty to yourself, honesty to your parents, your coaches, your medical staff."

Dr. Willem Meeuwisse: "Not all big hits cause concussions and not all concussions come from big hits…Not all concussions have visible signs. That's why players reporting their symptoms is so important."

Dr. Ruben Echemendia: "We know that if we intervene with those symptoms early, then the individual will have a much quicker recovery with far fewer complications."

Mandi Duhamel: "As a coach, it is your responsibility to look during a game and when you see these impacts happen, to talk to the players about what is going on."

Dr. Anthony Colucci: "It's important to take the player off the ice immediately after a suspected concussion, because the brain is very vulnerable at that point."

Where: Video is posted to NHL.com, the NHL's Media Website (https://media.nhl.com), NHL Social Media Channels (Twitter, Instagram and Facebook), NHL YouTube Channel.

Why: At a Hockey Player Safety Summit hosted by the NHL in January 2018 (which focused on the Berlin Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport as well as related concussion diagnosis and management issues), the NHL shared an educational video on concussion, which is updated annually and sent to NHL Clubs to show to Players, Club Coaching Staffs, Club management, and Club medical personnel. (The video is also annually shown to the League's On-Ice Officials, among others.) Various Summit participants (both during the two-day Program and thereafter) expressed an interest in obtaining access to the educational video for use with their own respective Players and other constituent members. The NHL and NHLPA collaborated to produce this version, suitable for viewing by participants at all levels of the game.

Who Attended: Representatives from the following hockey governing bodies participated in the 2018 Hockey Player Safety Summit: IIHF, USA Hockey, Hockey Canada, NCAA, AHL, CHL, USHL, ECHL, CWHL, NWHL, CJHL.

{coyotes} Kessel can fuel Coyotes run for Stanley Cup, Stepan says

EDINA, Minn. -- Derek Stepan couldn't hold back his enthusiasm about the Arizona Coyotes trading for forward Phil Kessel and said the Coyotes' quest to win the Stanley Cup has been accelerated as a result.

"It's monstrous to get a guy like [Kessel]," the 29-year-old center said Wednesday during Da Beauty League, a 3-on-3 set of offseason games featuring NHL players with ties to Minnesota. "It's big. Our management and our coaching staff is pushing the ship in the right direction, and our goal is to compete for the Cup [this] year.

"We went out and got a guy that our team needs; we need some scoring. I don't know if there's a more elite goal-scorer than Phil Kessel in his time in the NHL. You add something like that, it's definitely going to add something to your team."

Arizona acquired Kessel, defenseman Dane Birks and a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Alex Galchenyuk and defenseman prospect Pierre-Olivier Joseph on June 29.

The Coyotes tied for the third-fewest goals in the NHL (209) last season; Kessel had 27 goals in 2018-19 and has scored at least 20 goals in 11 straight seasons and at least 30 six times in that span. The 31-year-old has 823 points (357 goals, 466 assists) in 996 NHL games through 13 seasons with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Penguins.

Stepan also said the addition of center Carl Soderberg will help improve the Coyotes offense. The 33-year-old center was acquired in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Kevin Connauton and a third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft on June 25. Soderberg scored an NHL career-high 23 goals in 82 games last season.

"Carl Soderberg is a guy I've played a lot of time against and he's a guy that's going to fit right into what we want to do, I think," Stepan said. "Whatever the line combos may be, I think that you can't really go wrong now. We finally got some wingers that everyone's played with or ones that have scored 35 times every season since they came in. I try to work through the chemistry and I hope we can mold together."

The new faces are helping to build excitement in Arizona, but the Coyotes must also stay healthy; they lost 380 man-games because of injury last season and finished four points behind the Avalanche for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference. If their roster can escape injury, Stepan is optimistic they can make a big push.

"Next year will be my 10th [NHL] season and I've never gone through quite what we've gone through in the sense of injuries," he said. "We were right there in the hunt, and internally everyone has to step up their game. Guys that were there last year need to step up a bit and need to produce more, but I love our group's work ethic. I love our group's mindset.

"Since I've been [in Arizona], we've always been trying to push forward and we've been adding piece by piece each year, and I think we kind of developed the identity that [general manager] John Chayka and [coach] Rick Tocchet have been pushing. They want everyone pulling the same rope, and I think once we get these new guys in and get everyone on the same page, we'll be able to do just that."

{coyotes} Coyotes sign goalie Adin Hill to 1-year, 2-way contract

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona Coyotes signed goalie Adin Hill to a one-year, two-way contract Saturday.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

The 23-year-old Hill was 7-5 with a .901 save percentage, 2.76 goals-against average and one shutout in 13 games for Arizona last season. He was 16-19-2 with a .906 save percentage and a 2.61 GAA in 36 games for the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL.

''We are pleased to get Adin signed,'' general manager John Chayka said. ''He's a big, talented goaltender who has improved each season. We look forward to watching his development this year.''
