{coyotes} “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky, Kenny Albert & Eddie Olczyk Join the Turner Sports NHL Team

The NHL is coming to Turner Sports' networks and platforms later this year and the first additions to the roster of studio and game commentators are in place. Turner Sports and Wayne Gretzky have reached a multi-year agreement for "The Great One" to offer studio analysis during key moments of the NHL regular season and throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Additionally, veteran play-by-play commentator Kenny Albert and analyst Eddie Olczyk will call live games for Turner Sports throughout the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs, airing on TNT and TBS.

"The world's best hockey league is coming to Turner Sports later this year and the exciting additions of Wayne, Kenny and Eddie will jumpstart our NHL coverage with some of the best and biggest talents in the sport," said Tara August, Senior Vice President of Talent Relations and Special Projects, Turner Sports. "Their incomparable experiences within the game and unparalleled depth of knowledge will bring a distinct dimension to our game and studio coverage. We're thrilled to welcome them to the Turner Sports family."

"I've long admired Turner Sports' coverage of the NBA, among other sports, and I'm thrilled to be joining the studio team in their inaugural NHL season," said Gretzky. "This is an exciting opportunity to share my experiences and perspectives on the game I will always cherish, while hopefully informing and entertaining fans along the way."

"Calling the NHL's biggest games – including the Stanley Cup Final – has been a lifelong dream since I was five years old," said Albert. "I look forward to this tremendous opportunity with Turner Sports and can't wait for the puck to drop on the 2021-22 season! Becoming a teammate of 'The Great One' and sharing the broadcast booth with Eddie Olczyk – one of the best analysts in all of sports and a long-time friend and colleague of mine – is the icing on the cake!"

"I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Turner Sports family and its coverage of the NHL," said Olczyk. "I'm equally thrilled to be on the same team with 'The Great One' for the first time in my career; that's just tremendously tremendous! Thanks to everyone at Turner Sports for all of their efforts in assembling this amazing team."

Announced in April, Turner Sports' multi-year NHL agreement includes crowning a champion through its exclusive live coverage of the Stanley Cup Final on TNT in three of the seven years; half of the Stanley Cup Playoffs each year (half of the Conference Finals, First and Second Round games); rights to up to 72 exclusive national regular season games each season; and expansive digital and highlight rights for Bleacher Report, House of Highlights and additional platforms. TNT will also exclusively present the NHL Winter Classic each year, among other live events.

Additional live game and studio coverage details, along with programming plans, will be announced in the months ahead.

Gretzky, considered the greatest to ever play hockey, will contribute in-depth studio analysis during key moments of the NHL regular season and throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs on TNT and TBS. "The Great One" played 20 seasons in the NHL, including winning four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers, and is the NHL's all-time leading scorer with the most goals and assists in a career. He won a record nine Hart Trophies as the most valuable player in the NHL, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame immediately following his retirement in 1999.

Albert will bring his more than 30 years in sports broadcasting to Turner Sports as lead play-by-play commentator for its NHL telecasts. He is considered one of the most versatile broadcasters in sports and is the only national play-by-play broadcaster who calls hockey, football, basketball, baseball, and boxing. Albert has also served as the radio play-by-play voice of the New York Rangers since 1995. His hockey broadcasting career began in 1990 as play-by-play commentator for the Baltimore Skipjacks of the American Hockey League, eventually leading to calling NHL games for the Washington Capitals and nationally for Fox and NBC. He has called seven Stanley Cup Finals on national radio, more than 400 NFL games on Fox including five Divisional Playoff games, five MLB Divisional Series and the New York Knicks. The two-time national Emmy Award nominee has also served as play-by-play announcer for men's and women's ice hockey at five Winter Olympic Games for NBC.

Olczyk will be lead analyst for Turner Sports' coverage of the NHL throughout the regular season, the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the Stanley Cup Final. Olczyk played 16 seasons in the NHL, winning a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994. Following his playing career, he joined the Pittsburgh Penguins game broadcasts for Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh and provided analysis for ESPN, ESPN2 and NHL Radio. Olczyk was head coach of the Penguins from 2003-05, before returning to the broadcast booth in 2006 with NBC and the Chicago Blackhawks as lead hockey analyst for both, respectively, the last 15 years. A stage III colon cancer survivor, he was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012.

{coyotes} 2021 NHL Draft Lottery to take place June 2

The 2021 NHL Draft Lottery will be held June 2.

It will determine the order of selection for the first 16 picks in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft. It includes the 15 teams that failed to qualify for the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs and the expansion Seattle Kraken, who begin play next season.

The draft will be held virtually with the first round July 23 and rounds 2-7 on July 24.

As part of changes to the draft lottery announced March 23, the number of drawings was reduced from three to two. The first draw will determine which team receives the No. 1 pick and the second draw will determine which team gets the No. 2 pick.

The reduction in the number of draws ensures that the team that finished last in the NHL standings, the Buffalo Sabres, will pick no lower than No. 3.

Under the previous system, which had been in place since 2016, the team that finished last in the NHL standings could drop to No. 4. That occurred in 2017 (Colorado Avalanche), 2019 (Ottawa Senators) and 2020 (Detroit Red Wings).

The odds for the 15 teams that failed to qualify for the playoffs are based on the inverse order of the regular-season standings, with Sabres receiving the best odds (16.6 percent). To accommodate the addition of Seattle, the odds of the 15 other teams participating in the lottery were reduced proportionally from the odds utilized in the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery.

The Kraken enter the lottery as the No. 3 seed, as the Vegas Golden Knights did in their inaugural draft lottery in 2017. Seattle will have the same odds (10.3 percent) as the No. 4 seed, the New Jersey Devils, who finished with the third-worst regular-season record.

The Kraken are guaranteed to pick no lower than No. 5 in the first round.

The Arizona Coyotes will forfeit their first-round pick as part of sanctions, announced Aug. 26, 2020, for violating the NHL Combine Testing Policy during the 2019-20 season. The Coyotes also had to forfeit their second-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

If Arizona wins either lottery draw, a redraw will be conducted.

The odds for the first draw of the 2021 NHL Draft Lottery are as follows:

1. Buffalo Sabres, 16.6 percent

2. Anaheim Ducks, 12.1 percent

3. Seattle Kraken, 10.3 percent

4. New Jersey Devils, 10.3 percent

5. Columbus Blue Jackets, 8.5 percent

6. Detroit Red Wings, 7.6 percent

7. San Jose Sharks, 6.7 percent

8. Los Angeles Kings, 5.8 percent

9. Vancouver Canucks, 5.4 percent

10. Ottawa Senators, 4.5 percent

11. Arizona Coyotes, 3.1 percent

12. Chicago Blackhawks, 2.7 percent

13. Calgary Flames, 2.2 percent

14. Philadelphia Flyers, 1.8 percent

15. Dallas Stars, 1.4 percent

16. New York Rangers, 1.0 percent

Two other changes to the draft lottery will be implemented beginning in 2022:

-- Teams will be restricted from moving up more than 10 spots if it wins one of the lottery draws.

-- Teams cannot win the lottery more than twice in a five-year period. Wins in the lottery prior to 2022 will not be counted toward this total.

The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery will include the 16 teams that fail to qualify for the playoffs next season.

The restriction on teams moving up more than 10 places in the first round means the bottom 11 teams in the standings will be eligible to win the No. 1 pick. The bottom 12 teams would then be eligible for the No. 2 pick if one of them doesn't win the first drawing.

The NHL said the changes will reduce the likelihood of the worst-finishing team dropping in the draft order and not retaining the right to the No. 1 pick; reduce the magnitude of any possible drop in draft order for the worst-finishing team; limit the number of teams eligible to win the No. 1 pick (based on final regular-season standings); and limit the number of times the same team can benefit from winning a lottery drawing.

The 2021 NHL Draft Lottery will be held at the NHL Network studio in Secaucus, New Jersey.

{coyotes} Coyotes expecting more changes after missing playoffs again

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona general manager Bill Armstrong opted to stand pat at the NHL trade deadline, believing the Coyotes had the right roster to make the playoffs.

When they came up short yet again, the Coyotes made a big change, firing coach Rick Tocchet a day after the season ended.

It could be the first of many changes for a franchise that's missed the postseason seven of the past eight seasons.

"There's going to be change," Coyotes forward Christian Fischer said. "When you don't make playoffs, it's expected in the NHL."

The Coyotes entered the 2020-21 season loaded with expectations after reaching the postseason last year for the first time since 2012.

They had a solid roster mixed with veterans and talented young players, one of the NHL's best goalie duos and Tocchet at the helm.

Arizona got off to an uneven start but pulled itself into playoff contention with a solid stretch in March, so Armstrong opted to not make any moves at the trade deadline.

Then things fell apart.

Goalies Darcy Kuemper and Antti Raanta both suffered injuries and the Coyotes went into a funk at the wrong time, losing 12 of 15 games to fall behind St. Louis for the final playoff spot in the West Division.

Arizona swept San Jose in its final two games, but ended up three points behind the Blues to come up short for the third time in four seasons under Tocchet.

An overhaul could follow.

Arizona has numerous players who are unrestricted free agents, including Raanta, center Derick Brassard and defensemen Niklas Hjalmarsson, Alex Goligoski, Jason Demers and Jordan Oesterle. Right wing Conor Garland, the team's third-leading scorer, center John Hayden and left wing Michael Bunting also are unrestricted free agents.

"We're close, but obviously it's going to be a long road at the same time," Coyotes captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson said. "It's going to be a lot of hard work and guys willing to put in that work because it's not easy. If it was easy, everyone would know what to do to get into a playoff spot."

PHIL THE THRILL

Phil Kessel had an uneven first season in the desert, his production down as he battled injuries.

Healthy again, Kessel was back to being a consistent playmaker this season, leading the Coyotes with 20 goals and 43 points in 56 games. He also notched his 900th career point late in the season and stretched his consecutive games-played streak to 900 games, fifth-longest in NHL history.

Kessel was named the Coyotes' nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who most exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

"I had a bad season last year," he said. "I was injured at times last year and I was just off. I just tried to work hard, train hard during the summer and get back to where I was. I had an OK year and hope to have better years coming up."

CHYCHRUN RISES

Defenseman Jakob Chychrun took a big step forward during his fifth NHL season.

The 23-year-old had been a steady player since being taken with the 16th overall pick in the 2016 draft, but this season he became one of the team's best.

The son of former NHL player Jeff Chychrun led all NHL defensemen with 18 goals heading into the final stretch of the season and was Arizona's second-leading scorer with 42 points. He also was a physical presence and became a leader on and off the ice.

"I think my game took a good step," Chychrun said. "I really benefitted from a good summer of training, just working on my game and being healthy. This was my first season playing every game and that's something I'm proud of, something I've been wanting to do."
