{coyotes} Coyotes proposed new arena project advances to public vote

TEMPE, Ariz. -- NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman reiterated the League's strong support for the Arizona Coyotes' proposed new arena before Tempe City Council voted 7-0 on Tuesday to advance the proposal to a public vote.

"We've been as committed to this community as any major league sports league could be," Commissioner Bettman said, calling the $2.1 billion arena-entertainment district project "a win-win for the community."

"We're very enthused about the prospects for the Tempe entertainment district. Obviously the Coyotes need a new arena and [team owner] Alex Meruelo's commitment to this franchise and to Arizona has been unwavering," Bettman said. "We want to make clear the League support for the franchise."

The project was first proposed in September 2021 and includes a 16,000-seat arena, a practice rink, two hotels, retail shops, 1,600 apartments, a theater and a sportsbook. The Coyotes estimate the entertainment district would generate more than $150 million in revenue for Tempe over 30 years.

The Tempe city council voted 7-0 on Nov. 10 to allow residents to vote on the project during a May 16, 2023, special election, if a sufficient number of signatures are generated requesting the referendum.

Before the special election can be held, the council needed to approve a development and disposition agreement (DDA), a general plan amendment and a zoning amendment, which were taken up at the meeting Tuesday.

A development and disposition agreement includes the specific elements of a proposed development, including all commitments between the city and the developer.

"This was a great night," Coyotes president and CEO Xavier Gutierrez said. "The Arizona Coyotes and the Meruelo family are deeply thankful to the Tempe City Council for their unanimous support and cannot wait to move forward on this transformational development. The Tempe Entertainment District will be a huge win for this community, and we have no doubt that Tempe voters will agree. Our project will turn a landfill into a landmark."

Commissioner Bettman endorsed a public vote, saying, "We're very respectful of the process. And we believe when people understand the merits of this project, it'll get widespread support."

Commissioner Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly flew in from New York to emphasize the NHL's strong support for the arena in Phoenix's East Valley, close to the team's fan base and a majority of the metro area's five million residents.

The Coyotes would invest $2.1 billion in private funds for the arena project "without raising taxes or using current city revenues by issuing public infrastructure bonds sold to private investors," according to the proposal.

The Coyotes are playing at Mullett Arena, a 5,000-seat facility on Arizona State University's campus as they await the new arena, which would be located about a mile away on a tract of land just west of downtown Tempe.

The 46-acre site has been used as a trash dump and would require remediation before construction could begin.

Commissioner Bettman told the council that Arizona would get an NHL Draft and NHL All-Star Game, and that the team would be held to a 30-year, no-relocation.

{coyotes} Kaprizov point streak up to nine games, Wild top Coyotes 4-3

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Kirill Kaprizov had a goal and two assists to establish a career-high nine-game point streak and the Minnesota Wild held off the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 Sunday.

Sam Steel, Jared Spurgeon and Matt Boldy also scored for the Wild, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 20 saves.

Minnesota is 13-2-0 in its past 15 games against Arizona.

Nick Schmaltz scored in his third straight game, and Lawson Crouse and J.J. Moser added late goals for Arizona, playing the 10th game of a 14-game trip. The Coyotes failed to earn a point for the first time in four games.

Kaprizov has five goals and nine assists in his current scoring streak.

''Come to the rink prepared every single game, just play the way I know how to, not really think about a certain streak or to do anything special. Just play my game and let the rest of it kind of take care of itself,'' he said through an interpreter.

With assists in eight straight games, Kaprizov tied the franchise record set by Jim Dowd from Feb. 27-March 17, 2002. Mikael Granlund (2016-17) and Kevin Fiala (2021-22) have the franchise record with points in 12 straight games.

''He's a superstar. He's one of the best players in the league for a reason. He's our best player. He controls everything for us,'' Boldy said. ''Obviously it's nice to see him have that success, but I think a lot of it comes with a lot of hard work. It's not easy points. ... He's burying rebounds and winning battles on walls and making good plays.''

Added Marcus Foligno: ''You hear about guys with a lot of skill, but he's got a work ethic of a fourth liner and the attitude of a captain.''

Clayton Keller had his 14th assist of the season for Arizona. His 21 points is the most by a Coyote through the first 20 games played in a season since Ladislav Nagy had 21 in 2003-04.

Keller has a league-best 18 points in 16 road games, one more than Edmonton's Connor McDavid and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. However, McDavid has played just 10 road games and Crosby 14.

Connor Ingram had 24 saves for the Coyotes, who got goals from Crouse and Moser 90 seconds apart late in the third period to make it 4-3.

''I think the game was fair. I think we didn't play better than them. We came up short by one goal,'' Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said.

SHORT-HANDED WILD

Minnesota dressed 11 forwards and played most of the second period with only 10.

Foligno fought Liam O'Brien at 1:44, but the rugged Wild forward threw his equipment in the penalty box while continuing to yell at an official. In addition to a roughing minor and fighting major, he received 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct and a 10-minute misconduct.

Foligno said O'Brien told him he ''snowed the goalie.'' He then pushed O'Brien out of the way when he put his shoulder into Foligno's chest.

''I felt a little bit disrespected there,'' Foligno said. ''I don't know how you give a guy an extra 2 for something that there's really nothing there. It's just a 5-minute fighting penalty, give two guys each 5 minutes and move on. Sometimes these referees try to be bigger than the game.''

MACCELLI RETURNS

Arizona LW Matias Maccelli had two assists after being scratched the past two games. His 12 assists lead all rookies, and his 13 points are second behind the 15 by Seattle's Matty Beniers.

UP NEXT

Coyotes: Game 11 of a 14-game road trip is Thursday in Los Angeles.

Wild: Home against Edmonton on Thursday.

Good evening all,

On Tuesday 8th November I had the chance to take a flight with double eagle aviation over Marana Pinal and also Davis Monthan. Below is my log of the aircraft at Pinal taken from photos I took from the overflight.  Every effort has been made to identify each aircraft where possible with no assumptions made. There are still a number of identities missing so if anyone has a log at or around the similar time and wishes to share it with me I would be very grateful or if you have knowledge of the un-identifies aircraft I would be again very grateful.

{coyotes} Gostisbehere resurrected career with Coyotes, opening eyes around NHL

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Shayne Gostisbehere's past and future trade value provide an appreciation for how far the defenseman has come during the past 16 months.

The Arizona Coyotes acquired Gostisbehere along with second-round (defenseman Artem Duda) and seventh-round (traded to Montreal Canadiens) picks in the 2022 NHL Draft from the Philadelphia Flyers for nothing more than future considerations on July 22, 2021.

Gostisbehere had gone from being one of the hot, young defensemen in the NHL, a runner-up for the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year in 2015-16, a 65-point scorer in 2017-18, to a mistake-prone, confidence-lacking, occasionally scratched player in 2020-21.

Fast forward to the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline on March 3 and the Coyotes could, if they choose, land a high draft pick, a strong prospect or more by trading Gostisbehere, a pending unrestricted free agent, to a Stanley Cup contender that needs a veteran defenseman and power-play quarterback.

From future considerations to maybe future impact deadline acquisition, that's how Gostisbehere's value has skyrocketed in his two seasons with the Coyotes.

"Adversity happened, the League got better and now he needed to find his way," Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. "A fresh start helped him. He arrived with us a more mature individual and he's been just great."

Gostisbehere is a cautionary tale and redemption story all packed into a 29-year-old, 5-foot-11, 180-pound defenseman who has 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 19 games.

He was among the first of the young, fast, puck-moving defensemen to make an instant splash in the NHL in the past decade, preceding Adam Fox of the New York Rangers and Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, the past two winners of the Norris Trophy, awarded annually to the League's best defenseman.

But after his initial impact with the Flyers, Gostisbehere's game tailed off. His offensive instincts weren't enough to make up for his defensive deficiencies.

"I'm not going to lie, I was a guy without a lot of confidence," Gostisbehere said. "I'm thankful they gave me an opportunity and traded me to a place where I could get my game right. I'm forever thankful to them for that. It was tough times there at the end, but you've got to roll with the punches. I got an opportunity to resurrect my career. I'm having fun playing hockey again."

It clicked instantly for him in Arizona.

Gostisbehere had 51 points (14 goals, 37 assists) in 82 games last season, and averaged 22:11 of ice time per game. The Coyotes didn't hide him or shield him from hard matchups. They didn't stifle him when his creativity with the puck led to a turnover.

"A lot of it is opportunity from the coaching staff," Gostisbehere said. "They'll give you every opportunity. But when you fall back a little, they'll let you know. I think it keeps you in place to realize you're lucky to get this opportunity again. That's something I lost a little bit in Philly. The coaches and staff trust me."

That trust has been earned.

"One thing I did not know about 'Ghost' is how competitive he is," Tourigny said. "I thought point producer, offensive 'D,' but I wasn't sure how competitive he was defensively. He is really competitive. He cares a lot about both sides of the puck. He's not just a guy who tries to make points. He's really a new-age defenseman who cares about his defense and he's a really good teammate as well. He cares. He wants to get better. He's fun to coach."

Mario Duhamel, Arizona's assistant in charge of the defense, said Gostisbehere's growth has been away from the puck, in his hockey IQ and instincts.

"All the details of owning the middle, understanding what's the next play," Duhamel said. "He has that feel offensively so we take advantage of that feel offensively to understand the defensive side of it. He can read what the opponent will do offensively so we take advantage of that in order to help him to, for example, have a better gap, all those little details that makes you kill a play earlier than later."

When Gostisbehere has the puck, he's allowed to be himself, a freedom that has unlocked his confidence.

"When I think of Shayne Gostisbehere it's him doing the spin-o-ramas at the blue line, making the skilled plays, saucing pucks over sticks," Coyotes forward Christian Fischer said. "I don't know if something switched in his head mentally, but the very simple thing is he got a lot of opportunity here. It's a big credit to [Tourigny]. He would rather have us make that mistake than chip the puck in the corner. He'll tell you that; not too many coaches in the NHL will. The freedom to not be scared is big. If he was in and out of the lineup in Philly and tried the spin-o-rama at the blue line and turned it over, he's probably not playing the next game."

Gostisbehere's experience also thrust him into a leadership role, which is important since he's a veteran on a team trying to build through draft picks and allowing young players to make mistakes before they thrive.

"I've been through quite a few coaches and unique situations, dealing with a six-week long [Stanley Cup Playoffs] bubble, going to playoffs," Gostisbehere said. "I've had ups and downs. I've been through injuries. For me, it's just being that guy anyone can come and talk to."

Tourigny said he's heard those conversations.

"Sometimes we have guys who struggle and he's been there, he's vocal with it," Tourigny said. "He talks about it, saying, 'I've been the guy who had a big role, had success, been scratched after and struggled to get my game back.' He's talked with a few guys about it."

His time to have those conversations with his teammates in Arizona could be limited. Gostisbehere should be sought by contending teams prior to the trade deadline.

If he's moved this time, it won't be for future considerations.

"If I had the choice, I would sign Shayne Gostisbehere to a seven-year contract to stay with our team," Fischer said. "You can see he's hungry. Fifty points? He wants more. I know every team that scouts us, they're talking about Shayne Gostisbehere."

DETROIT (AP) Dylan Larkin was the only scorer in the shootout and the Detroit Red Wings extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Friday night.

Defenseman Filip Hronek scored his fifth goal in four games on a power play. Hronek, who added an assist, has 10 points in the last six games.

Jordan Oesterle scored his first goal this season and Andrew Copp added a power-play goal. Lucas Raymond and Tyler Bertuzzi each had two assists and Ville Husso had 20 saves for Detroit, along with three shootout stops.

Arizona's Jakob Chychrun scored his first goal of the season with 26 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Nick Schmaltz had a goal and two assists, and J.J. Moser also scored for Arizona. Karel Vejmelka stopped 33 shots.

Detroit led 1-0 after the first period. With Dylan Guenther in the penalty box for high sticking, the Red Wings scored with seven seconds left in the power play. Copp scored his second goal of the season, sliding in a rebound from the slot after Vejmelka stopped a shot by Raymond.

The Red Wings held a 3-2 advantage after two periods.

Zach Kassian's roughing penalty gave the Red Wings another power-play opportunity, and Hronek cashed in at 4:02 of the second. He lifted a slap shot over Vejmelka's left shoulder.

Schmaltz redirected a Jakob Chychrun shot past Husso at 8:32 of the period. Oesterle answered 28 seconds later, lifting a shot over Vejmelka's glove. Moser's blast from the right circle cut the Red Wings' lead to one.

Detroit barely killed off a Bertuzzi penalty late in regulation before Chychrun's goal.

ICE CHIPS

This was the Coyotes' ninth game during their current 14-game trip. ... Oesterle's goal was his first since March 10, against Minnesota. ... Arizona C Clayton Keller, who assisted on Moser's goal, has 12 points in eight games against Detroit.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Karel Vejmelka made 36 saves, and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-0 on Wednesday night to stop a four-game slide.

Lawson Crouse scored two goals, including an empty-netter, and Nick Schmaltz and Nick Bjugstad also scored for the Coyotes on the eighth stop of a 14-game road trip. Shayne Gostisbehere and Dylan Guenther each had two assists.

Vejmelka has two shutouts in 13 appearances this season.

Pyotr Kochetkov, just hours after a contract extension was announced, stopped 22 shots for Carolina. He wasn't expected to be on the ice, but scheduled starter Antti Raanta was the backup instead.

Carolina lost its fourth game in a row. It was shut out for the second time this season.

The Hurricanes' previous three games ended in overtime losses, marking the first time that had happened in franchise history.

Carolina put 14 shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes. Plus, winger Andrei Svechnikov missed wide on an open net during the Hurricanes' 5-for-3 power play.

The Coyotes scored on their only first-period shot, with Schmaltz beating Kochetkov 66 seconds into the game for his first goal of the season in his third game.

Crouse got his first goal of the night 1:52 into the third period, seconds after a power play expired. Bjugstad scored his fourth goal at 9:14 of the third, giving him three goals in his last two games. Crouse closed it out with his team-leading ninth goal with 2:07 left.

SIGN HIM UP

The Hurricanes announced the signing of Kochetkov to a four-year contract extension at an average annual value of $2 million per season through 2026-27.

Kochetkov, 23, appeared in his eighth career game and fifth this season Wednesday night. He entered the game with a 5-0-2 career record.

[cactuswings 4473] Marana Pinal LOG and Required Tues 8th November 2022

Good evening all,

On Tuesday 8th November I had the chance to take a flight with double eagle aviation over Marana Pinal and also Davis Monthan. Below is my log of the aircraft at Pinal taken from photos I took from the overflight.  Every effort has been made to identify each aircraft where possible with no assumptions made. There are still a number of identities missing so if anyone has a log at or around the similar time and wishes to share it with me I would be very grateful or if you have knowledge of the un-identifies aircraft I would be again very grateful.
Tucson log to follow
Many thanks
Philip
