{coyotes} NHL considering more unique destinations after Global Series -- Melbourne

STOCKHOLM -- As the NHL continues its final preparations to bring teams to the Southern Hemisphere for the first time in September, it is already considering other unique international cities that could host preseason games in future seasons, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said.

The Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes will go to Melbourne, Australia for preseason games in the 2023 NHL Global Series -- Melbourne on Sept. 23 and 24. They will play at Rod Laver Arena, home of the Australian Open tennis tournament.

"I'm not going to throw any country names out there but there are other places that we've yet to bring teams or our game which we think present unique opportunities, and we're exploring it," Daly said. "Like any business decision we make, as a League you look to be creative and you look to change it up a bit."

The NHL has played regular-season games in Sweden (Stockholm, Gothenburg), Czech Republic (Prague), Finland (Helsinki, Tampere), Germany (Berlin) and England (London) since 2007.

The Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings each will play two games at Avicii Arena in Stockholm in the 2023 Global Series -- Sweden from Nov. 16-19.

It will be the first time the NHL has brought four teams overseas for regular-season games.

"There was a point in time when all the games we played overseas were exhibition games, preseason games," Daly said. "We've evolved that model as we've grown and our popularity has grown and I think that will continue to be the case. Over time, you will see us staging regular-season games in other European markets. I think we have to be nimble, we have to adjust strategies to demand and continue to grow the property."

Daly said the NHL already has experienced a strong reaction from fans in Australia and they expect two sellouts at Rod Laver Arena.

"With any decision we make to bring teams or games, you're trying to build fandom and you're trying to build and grow a business," Daly said. "We think Australia presents an opportunity to do that. The Australians have been hot on our trail for probably 10-15 years now trying to get us to bring games over there. It's a significant decision because it's a long way and it's expensive, and where do you fit it into the overall schedule. Those are all challenges we worked through and got past in order to schedule these games."

He said the goal is for Australia to prove itself as a market where the NHL can return.

"We would hope that if we're successful in growing a fanbase in Australia and a business base in Australia that we'll make it a regular part of our rotation," Daly said. "I know it doesn't mean every year, but at least a regular participant for games in Australia. It was very intentional to start with two preseason games in Australia and not bring two teams over to play regular-season games. You give the market a little test drive. You see what the level of interest is or what level of interest you can build, and you go from there."

{coyotes} Tourigny signs contract to remain Coyotes coach through 2026-27

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Andre Tourigny signed a three-year contract to remain coach of the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday. The contract will run through the 2026-27 season.

The 49-year-old is entering the final season of the three-year contract he signed with Arizona on July 1, 2021. Last season, the Coyotes (28-40-14) finished seventh in the Central Division but won three more games and had 13 more points than in 2021-22.

"We are very pleased to sign Andre to a three-year extension," Arizona general manager Bill Armstrong said. "He is an excellent coach, leader and communicator who has helped us establish a tremendous culture in our dressing room. Our players like him, respect him and compete hard for him. We are thrilled to have him signed as our head coach for the next three years."

Tourigny said the feeling is mutual.

"The structure put in place by our management has energized our team," he said. "I'm also very fortunate to have such a quality coaching staff to work with. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with them every day. In addition, our high performance, development, medical and equipment staff do an excellent job of taking care of our players. That is the best environment that you can dream of having.

"I feel very lucky to work with our group of players as well. The hard work and commitment to the team they have demonstrated the past two years has established the foundation of our culture. It's an exciting time to be part of the Coyotes. My family and I love the Valley and we are thrilled to be committed long term in Arizona."

Prior to being hired by Arizona, Tourigny coached Ottawa of the Ontario Hockey League for three seasons (2020-21 season was canceled), winning the Matt Leyden Trophy as OHL coach of the year twice (2018-19, 2019-20), and the Canadian Hockey League's Brian Kilrea Coach of the Year Award (2019-20). He also won the gold medal as an assistant for Canada at the 2021 IIHF World Championship, and a silver medal as Canada's coach at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.

"When we did our research on him, I knew him from (junior hockey) pretty well," Armstrong said. "One of the things that I love about him and the reason that we have the ability to re-sign him and move into Phase 2 with him is because he doesn't leave a scar with the players. He has the players' best interests at heart and he's firm with the player. He motivates the player, but he doesn't leave a scar. I think they know that he likes them behind the scenes, and I think they feel that love and it enables him to get the most out of the player without leaving a scar."

Forward Jason Zucker, who signed a one-year contract with the Coyotes on July 1, echoed Armstrong.

"[Tourigny] was definitely a part of that call, and he was great," Zucker said. "He was great to talk to. I've talked to him multiple times. He was very instrumental in that original pitch. When we talked, he seems like a great coach. Everyone that I've talked to absolutely loves him."

Tourigny said he is happy to get the contract done before the Coyotes open the preseason with two games against the Los Angeles Kings in Melbourne, Australia, as part of the 2023 NHL Global Series on Sept. 23 and 24. They will start the regular-season with a four-game road trip, beginning at the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 13.

"That's huge," Tourigny said. "For a coach, I don't know, dealing or doing negotiations during the season, I don't think would've been awesome because your mind has to be on what you have to do. For me, it was this offseason or the next offseason. But there was no hesitation from the team. Billy came to see me when I was in Riga during the World Championship and talked to me right away. He said, 'do you have any interest in an extension?' I said, yes. He said, 'OK, do your job here at the Championship and we'll talk.' We talked a little bit before the draft, we talked during the development camp. We had a few things and needed time to get it done because that involved our assistant coaches and everything and Billy was on the same page. He thinks really highly of those guys. We needed to get everybody on board, so it took time but it was really smooth. No back and forth. We talked, I'd say, five times. Right from the get-go they gave me a good offer and we were really close. There were no negotiations of money or terms, there were just little details. It was really smooth."

{coyotes} NHL, NHLPA working to create international competition for February 2025

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

STOCKHOLM -- The NHL is working with the NHL Players' Association to create an international competition to be held in February 2025 with the intention of beginning a regular rotation of Olympic participation and a World Cup of Hockey in the even years to follow, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said at the European Player Media Tour on Wednesday.

The NHL last held a World Cup of Hockey in 2016. It did not participate in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics or 2022 Beijing Olympics after going in 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014. The 2026 Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.

"So if we do a '25 international tournament, we do the '26 Olympics, the '28 World Cup of Hockey, the '30 Olympics, the '32 World Cup of Hockey, and so on," Daly said. "That's the goal."

Daly said the 2025 tournament does not have to follow the same format of a World Cup of Hockey, which the League and the NHLPA held in 1996, 2004 and 2016. He said there have been no shortage of ideas being discussed.

"I don't know exactly what form it will take," Daly said. "The goal is to make it an international competition of some sort. It's going to obviously be heavily NHL-centric in terms of the player base, maybe entirely NHL. We'll see what form it takes, but that's something we're working on with the Players' Association."

A significant hurdle in the way of planning for a World Cup in 2025 is the uncertainty regarding the participation of Russian players because of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The International Ice Hockey Federation has banned Russia and Belarus from its events since the war began last year.

The International Olympic Committee has already said it will not invite Russia or Belarus to the 2024 Paris Olympics, but athletes with Russian and Belarussian passports may still be allowed to participate without the backing of their countries and not under their country's flags.

"We have had a fairly recent meeting with the IIHF and the IOC which we talked about Olympic participation in 2026 and as part of that what the World Cup would look like on a regular basis," Daly said. "We continue to be challenged by the short-term political realities, what's going on in Russia and Ukraine and what kind of role can Russia play both in an international tournament that we may sponsor or in the Olympic games. That continues to be an unknown that we're all trying to navigate around and through and that certainly affects the World Cup property."

Daly said the NHL and NHLPA will continue to monitor the pending decision on the potential participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in the 2024 Games.

"It would be an important piece of information as to how that worked out and whether it was executed and what the hockey bodies would decide to do with that," Daly said. "The IOC has made public statements that indicate to me that they're going to try very hard to include Russian athletes on some basis. Whether it's on the basis they've included them in the past where they're not really playing for a flag but they are playing and participating, I think that is probably a model they will pursue. Who knows how it plays out.

"The IIHF is different and they do have the ability to potentially not embrace that because they do operate that tournament [Olympics], but I think it's probably more likely than not that the IIHF would follow the lead of whatever the IOC found acceptable."

Daly said he can't yet project a deadline for when the NHL and NHLPA would have to make a decision about an international competition in February 2025, as well as future participation in the Olympics and the creation of a recurring World Cup of Hockey.

"Obviously, the more lead time the better," he said. "What we've said across the table, the various parties, the IIHF, the IOC, the NHLPA and the NHL is, let's strive to do it as quickly as we can, understanding we're not in control of every issue we need to be in control of."

{coyotes} Report: NHL free agent Alex Galchenyuk has 5 of 6 charges dropped after July arrest

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Embattled NHL free agent Alex Galchenyuk, who was arrested and subsequently cut by the Arizona Coyotes last month, has had five of the six charges against him dropped, according to the Athletic's Katie Strang.

"Galchenyuk was sentenced to 30 days of jail time, one of which counts as time served and 27 of which will be suspended upon successful completion of an alcohol recovery program and 12 months without consuming/possessing alcohol," Strang added.

The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native had his contract voided less than two weeks after signing with the Arizona Coyotes on July 1 after his arrest on July 9 on multiple charges, including private property hit-and-run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest, and threatening or intimidating.

According to a police report obtained by 12News after the incident, Galchenyuk allegedly made violent threats towards police officers responding to a hit-and-run incident the NHL journeyman was involved in.

"I will end your bloodline," Galchenyuk allegedly told officers.

"One phone call and you're dead."

Galchenyuk allegedly threatened to "chop" and disembowel an officer and members of his family. An African-American officer also accused Galchenyuk of uttering a racial slur.

The 29-year-old broke his silence days after the incident, apologizing for his actions in an open letter addressed to the his teammates and Coyotes fans.

"My behavior last week was deeply offensive, uncalled for, horrendous, embarrassing, disrespectful and just plain awful," Galchenyuk wrote. "I let you all down and I am truly sorry."

"I was very much looking forward to starting my life with my wife here in Arizona, playing alongside some of the best in the NHL and entertaining the incredible fan base the Coyotes have built here," Galchenyuk added. "By checking myself into the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, I hope to get the help I need and to ensure I never make a mistake like this again."

Since being taken No. 3 overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the once highly-touted forward has been well-traveled throughout his NHL career. Galchenyuk has suited up for seven different teams across his career, including the Coyotes, with whom he has had two stints during the 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons.

Galchenyuk split time last season between the NHL and the American Hockey League with the Colorado Avalanche and their affiliate Colorado Eagles. In 42 AHL games, the pivot tallied 16 goals and 42 points, while failing to register a point at the NHL level in 11 appearances with the Avalanche.

{coyotes} Report: Coyotes RFA Jeník seeking trade

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Arizona Coyotes restricted free agent Jan Jeník is seeking a trade this off-season as he looks for a fresh start in the NHL, Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports reports.

Jeník appeared in just two games with the Coyotes last season, failing to post a point. He had seven goals and 23 points in 30 games with the AHL's Tucson Roadrunners, adding two assists in two AHL playoff games.

The 22-year-old is the Coyotes lone remaining RFA this off-season and, while Morgan notes he has options to play in Europe, the winger prefers to stay in North America.

Jeník was selected in the third round - 65th overall - of the 2018 draft. He's appeared in 17 career games with the Coyotes, posting four goals and one assist.

The Boston Bruins signed free agent prospect John Farinacci to a two-year, entry-level contract on Wednesday worth $1.82 million.

Farinacci, 22, was drafted 76th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2019 draft but failed to sign a contract by Aug. 15, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The 5-foot-11 forward played the last two seasons in the NCAA with Harvard University where he scored 25 goals and 61 points in 79 games.

He also appeared in seven games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL during the 2020-21 season, scoring four goals and eight points.

Farinacci, represented the United States at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer, recording five goals and seven points en route to a gold medal.
