The American Hockey League remains on target to begin its 2020-21 season Feb. 5, AHL president Scott Howson said Wednesday.

"Details are still being worked out, but this step allows our teams and their National Hockey League partners to better determine their plans for the coming season," Howson said. "We look forward to dropping the puck on Feb. 5."
 
The AHL board of governors announced Oct. 28 that the league had targeted Feb. 5 for the start of its season. Howson said the board has approved the framework for a season that will begin on that date.

The league had announced July 30 it was targeting Dec. 4, 2020, for a start date.

The AHL canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 season and the Calder Cup Playoffs on May 11 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. It had suspended its season March 12, the same day the NHL paused its season. There were 209 AHL regular-season games remaining.

The cancelation marked the first time since the AHL was formed in 1936-37 that the Calder Cup was not awarded. Charlotte, then the top affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, won the AHL championship in 2019, defeating Chicago (Vegas Golden Knights) in five games in the best-of-7 series.

Derick Brassard signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 33-year-old center scored 32 points (10 goals, 22 assists) in 66 games with the New York Islanders last season and eight points (two goals, six assists) in 18 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

"We are very pleased to welcome Derick to our Pack," general manager Bill Armstrong said. "Derick is an experienced, skilled forward who can play center or wing and contribute offensively. He is also very effective in the face-off circle. We look forward to having him in our lineup this season."

Selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the No. 6 pick in the 2006 NHL Draft, Brassard has scored 483 points (186 goals, 297 assists) in 852 regular-season games with the Islanders, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers and Blue Jackets, and 68 points (25 goals, 43 assists) in 117 playoff games.

{coyotes} Stepan traded to Senators by Coyotes

Derek Stepan was traded to the Ottawa Senators by the Arizona Coyotes for a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft on Saturday.

The 30-year-old center scored 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 70 regular-season games and five points (one goal, four assists) in nine postseason games with the Coyotes last season. Stepan can become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

"Derek's acquisition provides us with important stability at center heading into the season," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said. "He plays a 200-foot game and has proven to be a reliable special teams player throughout his career. His addition to our lineup will also represent a valuable leadership presence within our group."

Stepan is the latest veteran acquisition for the Senators this offseason. Ottawa, which finished 30th in the NHL last season with a .437 points percentage, also added forwards Evgenii Dadonov and Alex Galchenyuk as free agents and acquired goalie Matt Murray and defenseman Erik Gudbranson in trades.

Selected by the New York Rangers in the second round (No. 51) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Stepan has scored 479 points (167 goals, 312 assists) in 739 NHL games with the Coyotes and Rangers. He has 54 points (20 goals, 34 assists) in 106 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Stepan was traded by the Rangers, along with goalie Antti Raanta, to the Coyotes for defenseman Tony DeAngelo and the No. 7 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft (forward Lias Andersson) on June 23, 2017.

The Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning will host the Chicago Blackhawks in one of five games to open the NHL's coronavirus pandemic-shortened 2021 season on Jan. 13.

The league released a first-of-its kind schedule Wednesday featuring four realigned divisions based on geography and limited to division play only. Each team will play 56 regular-season games, which will be squeezed into what's tentatively scheduled as a 116-day stretch ending on May 8.

It includes an NHL first: An all-Canadian North Division made up the nation's seven teams will play each other nine or 10 times. The three remaining eight-team divisions have all U.S. teams, which will face each division foe eight times.

Though the playoffs are set to open May 11, that date could be pushed back in the event the league is required to reschedule games amid the pandemic.

Though the schedule is set, much remains undetermined, including game times. A much bigger question is whether the NHL receives approval from Canada's provincial and federal health officials to allow the nation's teams to play in their home cities.

The San Jose Sharks, meantime, will open training camp Dec. 31 in Scottsdale, Arizona, and their season with two games at the Coyotes. Like the NFL's San Francisco 49ers who are closing out their season at Arizona, the Sharks are temporarily without a home after Santa Clara County banned contact sports through at least Jan. 8.

The NHL took into account the possibility of the ban being extended by having the Sharks open with eight straight road games. Their home opener against Vegas isn't scheduled until Feb. 1.

There are numerous quirks in the schedule, which will feature at least one game a day over an 868-game season, and has teams playing mostly two-game sets against the same opponent in the same city to reduce travel:

— The Sharks have three stretches in which they will play the same opponent four consecutive times, twice at home and twice on the road.

— Vancouver will play three-game home sets against Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary, and a three-game set at Toronto.

— The Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks will face each other five consecutive times from April 20 to May 1.

"The back-to-backs are more like baseball," Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said. "You are going to do a lot of prep and then going to have a very good knowledge of where that team is at after you play that first game."

Geography benefits the eight teams of the realigned East Division, made up of Boston, Buffalo, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington.

The Islanders for example, will close the season playing nine of their final 11 games within the state of New York, with the exception of games at nearby New Jersey and Philadelphia.

In the North, Ottawa has a stretch of 15 games in which the Senators will play 12 at home, with two trips to nearby Montreal and a game at provincial rival Toronto.

On the other hand, the St. Louis Blues, members of the realigned West, have a 12-game stretch in which they will play 10 times in the state of California.

Arizona's schedule features the Coyotes playing a league-high 10 consecutive home games, though the Coyotes will also play eight straight on the road at one point.

The realigned Central is the NHL's most wide-spread U.S. division and made up of Carolina, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Florida, Nashville and Tampa Bay. The schedule features the non-Florida teams doubling up on playing two-game road sets against the Panthers and Lightning on the same trip.

"I think you need to get off to a good start. I think every game is going to be intense," MacLellan said. "I expect high-intensity games throughout the whole schedule."

NEW YORK -- The NHL's 2020-21 regular season will commence Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021, with a five-game slate, highlighted by the Tampa Bay Lightning raising their second Stanley Cup championship banner before facing the Chicago Blackhawks at Amalie Arena. 

The other four games on the first night of the 2020-21 season include the Pittsburgh Penguins visiting the Philadelphia Flyers; the Montreal Canadiens at the Toronto Maple Leafs; the Vancouver Canucks at the Edmonton Oilers; and the St. Louis Blues at the Colorado Avalanche.

The 868-game regular-season schedule - 56 games per team - will conclude Saturday, May 8, when 30 of the League's 31 teams take to the ice.

A complete listing of each team's 2020-21 regular-season opening game is below and the complete 2020-21 regular-season schedule is attached. Start times and broadcast details for all games will be announced when available.

As previously announced, in reaching agreement on the format for the 2020-21 season, the NHL and NHLPA determined that the ongoing closure of the U.S.-Canada border required realignment and the League and the Players also sought to minimize team travel as much as possible by shifting to exclusively intradivisional play. It is the current plan to play games in the home arenas of participating teams while understanding that most arenas will not, at least in the initial part of the season, be able to host fans. However, depending on prevailing conditions both in local markets and across North America, the League will be prepared to play games in one or more "neutral site" venues per division should it become necessary. Each team in the East, Central and West divisions will play every other team in its division eight times while each team in the North Division will play every other team in its division nine or 10 times.

The top four teams in each division will qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with intradivisional play in the first two rounds (#1 vs. #4; #2 vs. #3). The four teams that advance to the Semifinal Round would be seeded by their regular season points total, with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 4 seed in one series and the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds meeting in the other. Formal training camps will begin on Jan. 3. There will be no pre-season games. The seven teams that did not participate in the 2019-20 Return to Play will be permitted to open their training camps as early as Dec. 31.

 

Notes By Division

Following are notes by divison compiled by the NHL Stats & Information Team ahead of a season unlike any in League history. A complete #NHLStats Pack: Division Notes for 2020-21 is available at media.nhl.com.

 

NORTH DIVISION

* The North Division marks a return to the NHL's rivalry roots. The League included only Canadian teams in its first seven seasons (1917-18-1923-24) until the Boston Bruins became the first U.S.-based franchise in 1924-25. 

* This is the first all-Canadian division in NHL history. When divisions were introduced to the NHL in 1926-27, the Canadian Division included the New York Americans for all 12 seasons (1926-27-1937-38) and the St. Louis Eagles in 1934-35 (a result of the original Ottawa Senators relocating). 

* Montreal and Toronto, the NHL's two remaining founding franchises, will play in the same division for the 41st season all-time and 22nd consecutive campaign dating to 1998-99 when the Maple Leafs joined the Canadiens in the Northeast Division. Ottawa also has been in the same division as Canada's two Original Six clubs since 199899; the Senators have shared a division with the Canadiens for each of their 28 seasons (including 2020-21). 

* Edmonton and Vancouver will continue as division rivals for a 41st consecutive season dating to 1979-80 when the Oilers entered the NHL (Smythe: 1979-80-1992-93; Pacific: 1993-94-1997-98; Northwest: 1998-99-2012-13; Pacific: 2013-14-2019-20). They now have been with Calgary for 39 consecutive campaigns dating to 1981-82 when the Flames - in their second season in Alberta - joined the Smythe Division. 

* Fans in Winnipeg are set to revisit several old rivalries. The original Jets were division rivals with Toronto for their final three seasons in Winnipeg (1993-94-1995-96) and were longtime Smythe Division foes of Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver (1982-83-1992-93). 

* Vancouver will renew acquaintances with former division rivals Montreal and Toronto. All three teams competed in the East Division from 1970-71 to 1973-74 (each of the Canucks' first four NHL seasons) before the League realigned in 1974-75. 

 

WEST DIVISION

* Los Angeles and San Jose will clash in the same division for a 29th consecutive season since the Sharks entered the NHL (Smythe: 1991-92-1992-93; Pacific: 1993-94-2019-20). With the addition of Anaheim in 199394, the three-team California intrastate rivalry continues for a 27th straight campaign. Arizona remains in the same division as the California trio for a 22nd consecutive season since 1998-99. 

* Los Angeles and St. Louis share divisional ties as the Kings and Blues were part of the inaugural West Division for seven seasons beginning in 1967-68 when the NHL expanded to 12 teams. They also were joined in that division by the Minnesota North Stars, who then battled the Blues in the Smythe and Norris Divisions for 16 of their 19 remaining seasons before relocating to Dallas (Smythe: 1974-75-1977-78; Norris: 1981-82-1992-93). 

* Colorado rejoins a division with the three California teams, their divisional foes for their first three seasons in Denver (Pacific: 1995-96-1997-98). 

* The Coyotes and Blues will play in the same division for the first time since 1997-98 - the Coyotes/original Jets and Blues clashed in the Central Division for five seasons (1993-94-1997-98). 

* The West Division includes three teams that have reached the Stanley Cup Final in the past five seasons (STL: 2019; VGK: 2018; SJS: 2016).

 

CENTRAL DIVISION

* The longest active run as division rivals among teams in the new Central Division belongs to Tampa Bay and Florida, who will play in the same grouping for a 27th consecutive season (Atlantic: 1993-94-1997-98; Southeast: 1998-99-2012-13; Atlantic: 2013-14-2019-20). Chicago and Nashville are next in line with 22 straight campaigns, playing against each other in the Central Division for the Predators' entire history. 

* Original Six rivals Chicago and Detroit will play in the same division for the 47th time and first since ending a run of 31 consecutive seasons as division rivals in 2012-13 (American: 1926-27-1937-38; East: 1967-68-1969-70; Norris: 1981-82-1992-93; Central: 1993-94-2012-13). 

* Chicago and Detroit, who entered the NHL together in 1926-27, are accompanied in the new Central Division by six teams that either joined the League or began play in their current city in the 1990s or later (TBL: 1992-93; DAL: 1993-94; FLA: 1993-94; CAR: 1997-98; NSH: 1998-99; CBJ: 2000-01). 

* Dallas shares a history of divisional connections with Detroit, playing against them in the Norris Division as the Minnesota North Stars for 12 seasons (1981-82-1992-93) before relocating to Texas for five more campaigns from 1993-94 to 1997-98 - combining for all five division titles in that span. 

* The Lightning contested their inaugural season (1992-93) in the Norris Division, which featured the Blackhawks, Red Wings and North Stars. 

* Columbus returns to the Central Division, where it competed for each of its first 12 seasons (2000-01-2012-13). The Blue Jackets had the Blackhawks, Predators and Red Wings as intradivisional opponents over that span. 

* The Hurricanes, Lightning and Panthers were in the Southeast Division together for 14 seasons (1998-99-201213). Before relocating to Raleigh, the Hartford Whalers played their first two NHL seasons in the Norris Division with Detroit (1979-80-1980-81). 

* Tampa Bay and Dallas will become the first teams in 40 years to compete in the same division in the season after meeting in the Stanley Cup Final (1980-81: NYI vs. PHI in Patrick Division).

 

EAST DIVISION

* Boston and Buffalo will be intradivisional opponents for a 50th consecutive season dating to 1970-71, the longest such active streak in the NHL. 

* The Rangers and Islanders are in the same division for a 48th consecutive season since the latter entered the NHL in 1972-73 (East: 1972-73-1973-74; Patrick: 1974-75-1992-93; Atlantic: 1993-94-2012-13; Metropolitan: 2013-14-2019-20). The Flyers join them for a 46th straight campaign dating to 1974-75, while the Devils, Flyers, Islanders and Rangers align in the same division for a 38th consecutive season since 1982-83. 

* The Bruins and Rangers will play in the same division for the 20th time in their storied histories, but for the first time in nearly 50 years. The Original Six rivals were in the American Division together for each of New York's first 12 seasons (1926-27-1937-38) and in the original East Division for the first seven campaigns of the League's expansion era (1967-68-1973-74). 

* New York's intrastate rivalry puts the Sabres, Rangers and Islanders all in the same division for the first time in nearly 50 years. Buffalo played each of its first four NHL seasons in the original East Division, with the Rangers for all four (1970-71-1973-74) and with the Islanders for two (1972-73-1973-74). 

* Intrastate rivals Philadelphia and Pittsburgh will be in the same division for a 22nd straight season and 41st time overall since joining the NHL together in 1967-68 (West: 1967-68-1973-74; Patrick: 1981-82-1992-93; Atlantic: 1998-99-2012-13; Metropolitan: 2013-14-2019-20). 

* Fans in Boston and Philadelphia are set to revisit a historic rivalry which featured several playoff battles in the 1970s between the "Big Bad Bruins" and "Broad Street Bullies", including a meeting in the 1974 Stanley Cup Final, and, more recently, a Winter Classic showdown and historic 2010 playoff series.

* The Bruins (2019-20, 2013-14), Capitals (2016-17, 2015-16) and Rangers (2014-15) have combined for five of the last seven Presidents' Trophy wins.

{coyotes} NHL COVID-19 rules require coaches to mask up behind bench

NHL coaches are required to wear masks behind the bench, owners are barred from having face-to-face meetings with players, and teams can travel with no more than 50 people.

Those are among the coronavirus-related protocols the NHL released Tuesday in preparing to open the 2021 season on Jan. 13. Players scheduled to report for the start of training camp over the next two weeks.

The NHL also announced it is tweaking its offside rule for the upcoming season.

Both of the player's skates must be fully across the plane of the opposing blue line ahead of the puck in order to be offside. That's a switch from the previous rule in which a player was considered onside if he had at least one skate physically touching the blue line.

Under the coronavirus protocols, players arriving at their home cities for the start of training camp will be required to self-quarantine for a seven-day period, during which they will be tested four times. The NHL's seven teams which failed to qualify for the playoffs open camp on Dec. 31, with the remaining 24 teams beginning four days later.

Coaches are required to wear face coverings at all times, except when on the ice and when eating and drinking. Team executives, such as owners and presidents, are listed in the Group 3 category, which is restricted from having direct contact with coaches and players at all times.

The rules cover everything from travel to mandating a team health official conduct a remote educational meeting for players and staff outlining the protocols before camps open.

Players are asked to avoid going to restaurants, bars and clubs, and to not have outside guests at their homes.

The rules were negotiated between the league and the NHL Players' Association and expanded after the NHL closed last season in hubs in Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta. Teams were limited to staying inside a security bubble that was closed to the public, including family members.

The new season will feature teams traveling, but playing only division opponents through a 56-game regular season and the first two rounds of the playoffs. The four divisions have been realigned based on geographical proximity to reduce travel.

The NHL is still in discussions with federal and provincial health officials to determine whether its seven Canada-based teams will be able to play in their home markets.

The regular season is scheduled to conclude on May 8, with the Stanley Cup Final tentatively set to finish by July 9. The league's trading deadline will be April 12.

The NHL has also set aside July 21 for its expansion draft for the addition of the Seattle Kraken, followed by the two-day draft to be held on July 23-24.

NHL Rule 83 (Off-side)

Beginning in the 2020-21 regular season, a player's skate will not have to be in contact with the blue line in order to be on-side. The updated language for NHL Rule 83.1 follows.

83.1 Off-side - Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone.

The position of the player's skates and not that of his stick shall be the determining factor in all instances in deciding an off-side. A player is off-side when both skates are completely over the leading edge of the blue line involved in the play.

(NEW) - A player is on-side when either of his skates are in contact with the blue line, or on his own side of the line, at the instant the puck completely crosses the leading edge of the blue line. On his own side of the line shall be defined by a "plane" of the blue line which shall extend from the leading edge of the blue line upwards. If a player's skate has yet to break the "plane" prior to the puck crossing the leading edge, he is deemed to be on-side for the purpose of the off-side rule.

Offseason highlights include the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft for the Seattle Kraken on July 21. Seattle was approved as the 32nd NHL team on Dec. 4, 2018, and will begin play in the 2021-22 season.

Here are the critical dates for the upcoming season:

Dec. 31: Training camps open for seven teams that did not participate in the Return to Play Plan for the 2019-20 season (Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks).

Jan. 3, 2021: Training camps open for the remaining 24 NHL teams.

Jan. 13: Regular season begins. Each of the eight teams in the East, Central and West divisions will play every other team in its division eight times, and each team in the North Division (seven teams based in Canada) will play every other team in its division nine or 10 times.

April 12: NHL Trade Deadline (3 p.m. ET).

May 8: End of regular season.

May 11*: Stanley Cup Playoffs begin. The top four teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs. The first two rounds will be intradivisional, with the first-place team playing the fourth-place team and the second-place team facing the third-place team in the first round. The four teams that advance from the second round to the Semifinal Round will be seeded by their points total in the regular season (No. 1 vs. No. 4; No. 2 vs. No. 3).

July 9*: Last possible day of Stanley Cup Final.

July 17: Deadline for teams to submit protected lists for 2021 NHL Expansion Draft (5 p.m. ET).

July 21: 2021 NHL Expansion Draft (8 p.m. ET).

July 23: First round of 2021 NHL Draft.

July 24: Rounds 2-7 of 2021 NHL Draft.

July 28: Restricted free agent/unrestricted free agent signing period begins (12 p.m. ET).

{coyotes} Coyotes sign Drake Caggiula to one-year, one-way contract

The Arizona Coyotes have signed forward Drake Caggiula to a one-year, one-way contract, the team announced Monday.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports that the deal is worth $700,000.

Caggiula, 26, spent the past season and a half with the Chicago Blackhawks after starting his career with the Edmonton Oilers. The Pickering, Ont., native went undrafted out of the University of North Dakota.

Last season, Caggiula posted nine goals and 15 points in 40 games. He has five years and 222 total games logged in his NHL career.
