{coyotes} Pirri, Stastny help Golden Knights beat Coyotes 5-1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Brandon Pirri has had a late December to remember for the Vegas Golden Knights.

The journeyman forward had a goal and assist in the Golden Knights' 5-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday night, and has five goals as part of his seven points in the six games he's played for Vegas this season.

Pirri failed to register a point in only one of those games. He's been a regular since Dec. 20.

''It's a lot of fun playing here because everyone's contributing,'' Pirri said. ''Things are going good. I've always believed in myself and I'm getting the opportunity. When you get the opportunity you have to reward the people that put you in this spot and at the same time I have to reward myself. I put in a lot of work.''

Paul Stastny also had a goal and an assist and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 shots for Vegas. Reilly Smith, Cody Eakin and Ryan Carpenter also scored to help Vegas win its third straight and extend its points streak to six games.

The Golden Knights have won five of six games against Arizona since Vegas entered the NHL last season.

''We played hard, we played quick. We were good with the forecheck, we were good with the puck and we didn't make a lot of mistakes,'' forward Jonathan Marchessault said.

A large following of Golden Knights fans made plenty of noise for the visiting team in the most recent installment of the fledgling rivalry, and saw their team take control with three goals in the third period.

The third was a short-handed goal from Carpenter, his second goal of the season.

Just when the Golden Knights' first power play ended, Pirri got a rebound behind the net and backhanded the puck back toward the crease, where Stastny was waiting to stuff it in at 3:35 of the first.

Arizona's Nick Schmaltz appeared to tie at 1 with 8:54 left in the second period, but the goal was reviewed on a coaches' challenge and overturned for offside.

Vegas made it 2-0 with 3:57 to play in the second. Brad Hunt tipped a loose puck in front, and Smith got to it first for a shot that zipped past Darcy Kuemper.

Kuemper finished with 33 saves.

The Coyotes took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play with two Golden Knights in the penalty box to get their lone goal at the 2:58 mark of the second. Alex Galchenyuk scored, with Oliver Ekman-Larsson getting the assist.

Ekman-Larsson reached 312 career points, passing Keith Yandle for the most points in franchise history for a defenseman.

Galchenyuk ran his points streak to five games, in which he has totaled seven points.

Eakin edged the puck over the goal line at 4:21 of the third for his 12th goal of the season, and Pirri scored on a breakaway less than three minutes later.

''I liked the way we played all night, not just the third period,'' Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said.

Arizona started the third period on a power play - one of six on the night - but couldn't produce and fell further behind.

A frustrated Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet called his team's effort an implosion less than 24 hours after Arizona got an overtime win at Anaheim.

''Just very casual from a lot of key guys,'' Tocchet said. ''I just saw a team go totally south on us. You want to be a good NHL hockey team or a player, you've got to be consistent. ... So maybe we have some players here that just can't do it regularly and we're going to have to find some players that will.''

NOTES: Coyotes F Brad Richardson missed his third straight game with an illness. ... D Kevin Connauton was shaken up in the first period and left the ice, but returned for a shift in the final seconds of the period and stayed in the game. ... Vegas F Valentin Zykov, just claimed off waivers on Saturday, was scratched. So was F Tomas Nosek, who missed his first game since Dec. 20. ... F Alex Tuch was given a penalty for a check to the head when he drove a shoulder into Arizona's Nick Cousins, which led to the Coyotes' power-play goal in the second.

{coyotes} Coyotes rally to beat Ducks 5-4 in OT on Schmaltz's goal

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Nick Schmaltz scored 33 seconds into overtime and the Arizona Coyotes rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the skidding Anaheim Ducks 5-4 on Saturday night.

The Coyotes trailed 4-2 less than nine minutes into the second but tied it before the period was over. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Christian Fischer, Nick Cousins and Jakob Chychrun also scored for Arizona, and Adin Hill stopped 37 shots.

Alex Galchenyuk and Clayton Keller each had two assists. Schmaltz and Ekman-Larsson also had assists for multi-point games.

Ondrej Kase had two goals for the Ducks, who have dropped five straight. Daniel Sprong and Adam Henrique also scored. Nick Ritchie had three assists and John Gibson made 25 saves.

Kase opened the scoring 46 seconds into the game when he flipped a backhand past Hill on a breakaway. It was the second-quickest goal for Anaheim to start a game this season.

The teams then traded power-play goals on one-timers.

Sprong gave the Ducks a two-goal advantage when he took a pass from Jakob Silfverberg less than 14 minutes in for his fourth of the season. Ekman-Larsson got Arizona on the board with 17 seconds remaining in the first when he scored from the faceoff circle off a feed from Galchenyuk for his fifth.

Henrique got his eighth when he converted a turnover deep in the Coyotes end for his eighth 12 seconds into the second. Arizona answered eight minutes later when Fischer took a wild carom off the boards that Gibson was unable to corral and fired it into the net while falling to the ice.

Kase got his second goal 12 minutes into the second when he was in front and redirected Ritchie's shot for his 11th. But the Coyotes rallied to tie it with a pair of goals 39 seconds apart when Cousins and Chychrun both beat Gibson up high.

NOTES: Arizona has taken two of three in the season series, with two meetings remaining in March. ... Henrique's goal was the quickest score at the start of any period by the Ducks this season. The previous fastest was when Rickard Rackell scored 14 seconds into overtime against Edmonton on Nov. 23. ... Sprong has four goals in 11 games for the Ducks since being acquired in a trade from Pittsburgh on Dec. 3.

{coyotes} Last-place Kings get 4th straight win by beating Coyotes 2-1

LOS ANGELES (AP) Dustin Brown scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Arizona Coyotes 2-1 on Thursday night.

Jake Muzzin also scored for the last-place Kings, who have won a season-high four consecutive games. Jonathan Quick made 26 saves.

Jakob Chychrun had a power-play goal and Darcy Kuemper stopped 24 shots for the Coyotes, who won their previous two.

Brown put the Kings ahead 2-1 just 17 seconds into the third with a shot from the right circle past Kumper's left shoulder. Brown has scored a team-leading 10 goals in 27 games after missing the start of the season because of a broken finger.

Nick Cousins had an apparent Coyotes goal overturned in the second period for making incidental contact with Quick prior to scoring.

The Kings tied it 1-all at 18:39 of the first when Muzzin's shot deflected off three Coyotes, ultimately striking the visor of defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson and caroming in.

Kyle Clifford had the secondary assist for his 100th career point.

The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead at 15:27 on Chychrun's second power-play goal of the season, a slap shot over Quick's left shoulder.

NOTES: Coyotes C Brad Richardson (flu) did not play. . Kings C Jeff Carter did not play because of an upper-body injury and is day-to-day. . {coyotes} Galchenyuk leads Coyotes past Sharks 4-3 in shootout

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Alex Galchenyuk broke out of his drought with two goals in regulation plus the only one in a shootout, and the Arizona Coyotes defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Sunday.

Conor Garland also scored to help the Coyotes win their second consecutive game after losing three straight and seven of eight. Darcy Kuemper made 35 saves for Arizona.

Tomas Hertl scored twice and Tim Heed had a goal for San Jose, which lost its third straight after winning a season-high five in a row.

Galchenyuk, acquired in a June trade with Montreal for Max Domi, hadn't scored in 16 games and had just three goals all season going into Sunday.

The 24-year-old center, drafted third overall in 2012, scored on a 5-on-3 power play to snap a 1-all tie at 12:21 of the second period. Galchenyuk got his first goal since Nov. 11 when he flicked a backhand past Sharks goalie Aaron Dell on a breakaway at 15:31 of the first.

Hertl recovered the puck behind the net and scored on a wraparound to tie it 3-all at 13:53 of the third. Hertl also scored early in the third to even the game at 2 before Garland gave the Coyotes a 3-2 advantage at 6:06.

Heed scored on the power play in the first period, his first goal of the season in his third game for San Jose.

Dell turned back 23 shots.

NOTES: Sharks D Erik Karlsson was handed a two-game suspension by the NHL for an illegal check to the head of Los Angeles Kings forward Austin Wagner on Saturday. Heed took Karlsson's spot in the lineup. ... Sharks C Joe Thornton got his 1,041st assist on Heed's goal, passing Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne for 10th place on the NHL's career list.

{coyotes} Dec. 23: Trottier gets six points in one period

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Dec. 23

1978: Bryan Trottier sets an NHL record with six points in the second period and finishes the game with five goals and three assists in the New York Islanders' 9-4 victory against the New York Rangers at Nassau Coliseum.

Trottier puts the Islanders ahead 1-0 with a first-period goal, scores three times and has three assists during the Islanders' seven-goal second period, and ends his night with a third-period power-play goal. A two-goal, five-point night by linemate Mike Bossy is almost an afterthought.

It's the last game before Christmas for the Islanders, who take a 16-game home unbeaten streak (12-0-4) into the break.

MORE MOMENTS

1933: Howie Morenz of the Montreal Canadiens scores his 249th NHL goal in a 3-0 win against the Detroit Red Wings at the Forum to become the League's all-time leader. Morenz surpasses Cy Denneny, the previous record holder with 248. Morenz finishes his NHL career with 271.

1967: Rookie goalie Wayne Rutledge makes 21 saves for his first NHL shutout and the first for the Los Angeles Kings, who defeat the St. Louis Blues 4-0. Bryan Campbell scores twice for the Kings, who play their final game at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. After a two-game trip, they return for the opening of the Forum in Inglewood, California.

1980: The Winnipeg Jets defeat the visiting Colorado Rockies 5-4 to end their 30-game winless streak (0-23-7). Willy Lindstrom's power-play goal with 1:50 remaining in the third period breaks a 4-4 tie. It's the Jets' first victory since defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 on Oct. 17. During the streak, they go through three coaches (Tommy McVie, Bill Sutherland and Mike Smith).

1988: Wayne Gretzky moves past Bobby Hull for fourth place on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list by scoring two empty-net goals for the Kings in a 5-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Pacific Coliseum. The two goals give Gretzky 611 in his NHL career, one more than Hull. He also has two assists.

1999: Paul Coffey of the Carolina Hurricanes has an assist in a 4-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators to become the first defenseman (and eighth player) in NHL history to reach 1,500 points. The milestone comes when he sets up Sami Kapanen's power-play goal late in the second period.

2006: Mike Sillinger becomes the first player in NHL history to reach double figures in goals with nine different teams when he scores his 10th of the season in the Islanders' 4-0 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nassau Coliseum.

2016: Arizona Coyotes forward Shane Doan reaches two milestones on the same night at Gila River Arena. Doan plays in his 1,500th NHL game, all with the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise, and scores his 400th goal when he beats Frederik Andersen of the Toronto Maple Leafs at 19:16 of the second period. However, the Coyotes lose 4-1. Leo Komarov scores two goals for Toronto.

2017: Brock Boeser becomes the fastest rookie in Vancouver Canucks history to score 20 goals when he beats Jake Allen of the St. louis Blues in a 3-1 loss at Rogers Arena. Boeser gets his 20th goal in his 34th game. The 20-year-old is the fifth player in the NHL and the first rookie to score 20 goals in the 2017-18 season.

{coyotes} Red Wings’ Johan Franzen describes ‘very dark’ life with concussion

Former Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen is still struggling with the concussion that ended his NHL career almost four years ago, and in a new interview, he says he's suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression.

"Sometimes my whole world falls apart and I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel," Franzen said in an interview with the Swedish newspaper Expressen, which released excerpts from the interview in English. "Most of the time I think I am moving in the right direction, but when I have down periods there is nothing positive. I almost give up then, and it is even worse because you think you have been better for a while."

https://www.expressen.se/sport/hockey/nhl/johan-franzen-my-world-can-fall-apart/?utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=social_sharing&utm_source=twitter&social=twtr

Franzen, now 38, suffered multiple concussions during his 10 NHL seasons, but the final one came on Jan. 6, 2015 when he was hit in the head during a game against the Edmonton Oilers. Franzen skated in two games in October of 2015, but hasn't played in the NHL since.

"All I can do then is to sleep and lay in my bed," he said. "I take antidepressants and try to feel better again. But it quickly gets dark. Very dark."

Earlier this year Franzen's wife, Cissi, wrote about her husband's struggles in a blog post titled An Emotional Week. In the post she describe traveling with the couple's two kids to Denver, Colo., where Johan was having treatment at the Marcus Brain Health Institute.

"Living with a husband with a brain injury is not easy, it's like a rollercoaster," Cissi wrote. "But I am doing my best to get us to a better place, not only for us and but also for our amazing boys that deserve the best!!"

In his interview with Expressen, Franzen also talked about how he wants to return to his native Sweden one day to get a fresh start at life.

"I still have many of my best memories from (Detroit) but the last few years I have just wanted to leave," he said. "I don't want to be inside these walls. There has been so much anxiety, panic and depression."

{coyotes} Richardson's 2 late goals lead Coyotes past Avalanche 6-4

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Brad Richardson and the Arizona Coyotes were tasked with trying to limit the productivity of the Colorado Avalanche's high-scoring top line.

They did just enough Saturday night, and Richardson provided the offense the Coyotes needed down the stretch, scoring twice in the final 3:39 in a 6-4 win over Colorado.

Richardson's ninth goal of the season broke a 4-all tie, and his empty-net goal was his 10th and gave him the team lead in scoring. The empty-netter came with 12 seconds left.

''I just literally tried to shoot as quick as I could on that,'' Richardson said of his first goal. ''Went through two other guys. I don't think the goalie saw it at all.''

Derek Stepan, Christian Fischer and Richard Panik scored for Arizona, and Conor Garland added his first career NHL goal.

Alexander Kerfoot scored twice, and Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon added goals for the Avalanche, who have lost three of four. J.T. Compher and Matt Nieto had two assists for Colorado, which entered in fourth place in the Western Conference.

The Coyotes lost a three-goal lead in the third period as the Avalanche rallied with goals from Landeskog, Kerfoot and MacKinnon to make it 4-4. Landeskog and MacKinnon are part of Colorado's 157-point No. 1 line that didn't score a point until the third.

''We had MacKinnon's line kind of hemmed in quite a bit in their end,'' Richardson said.

''We defended well early,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''If there's any guy you want to get the goal, for me, it's `Richie' because he shut down that line. That line is arguably the best line in hockey. He did a great job. That's tough to do.''

The Avalanche went with an extra attacker inside the final two minutes, but to no avail. The Coyotes put an end to a three-game losing streak.

MacKinnon tied it at four with his 22nd of the season at 11:51 of the third. With intensity high, Landeskog and Arizona's Lawson Crouse dropped gloves and exchanged blows.

Both were given five minutes for fighting with 7:35 to play, Landeskog getting the better of the fight.

It didn't give the Avalanche momentum, however, as the Coyotes finished strong despite having lost seven of the previous eight games.

''The third was not fancy, it wasn't cute, it wasn't east-west, it was all the things we wanted it to be,'' Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. ''Up-tempo, physical, involved, passionate. That's the way we have to play. That's the way we were playing at the beginning of the year.''

Panik gave the Coyotes a first-period lead with his left-handed wrister at 8:58. He scored off a pass from Stepan for his seventh goal of the season.

Hill got his pad on Sven Andrighetto's centering pass in deep, but the puck caromed right to Kerfoot, who stuffed in the rebound at 18:13 of the first to tie the game.

It was Kerfoot's first goal since Nov. 14.

Clayton Keller fanned on a shot, but Stepan was nearby to shoot the puck past Philipp Grubauer with five seconds left in the period, and Arizona had momentum with a 2-1 lead to start the second period.

The Coyotes' third goal was almost all due to the handiwork of Nick Schmaltz, who handled the puck through defenders before passing, then got on the receiving end of another pass from Alex Galchenyuk that led to Schmaltz's assist to Fischer.

Fischer's eighth goal at 2:30 of the second period gave the Coyotes a two-goal lead. Then Garland hustled to catch up to a long pass from Mario Kempe and beat Grubauer at 8:28.

Grubauer, who had 12 saves, was then removed from net and replaced by Pavel Francouz, who at age 28 made his NHL debut.

Francouz stopped 21 shots. Landeskog's goal was his team-leading 24th of the season.

''We left it all out there in the third,'' Landeskog said. ''If you ask me, I think we deserved more, but that's the way it goes.''

NOTES: Coyotes D Kevin Connauton was scratched for the second straight game. ... D Ilya Lyubushkin recorded his first career NHL point with an assist on Garland's goal. ... The Avalanche called up C Sheldon Dries, Francouz and F A.J. Greer from Colorado of the AHL. Francouz was Grubauer's backup goaltender with Semyon Varlamov out due to illness. Dries was scratched. ... C Colin Wilson, hurt Friday in a loss to Chicago, was placed on injured reserve.

{coyotes} Price's 36 saves help Canadiens beat Coyotes 2-1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Carey Price reached another milestone and the Montreal Canadiens got another big win.

Price stopped 36 shots in his 300th career win, leading the Canadiens to a 2-1 victory over the slumping Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night.

Paul Byron and Shea Weber scored as Montreal won the second game of a back-to-back for the first time in four tries this season. The Canadiens, coming off a 2-1 loss at Colorado on Wednesday night, have won six of their last nine overall.

''Definitely a trying two games with the travel involved,'' said Price, who started both games. ''But we found a way to do it. Great character showed up tonight.''

Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored for the Coyotes, who have just two goals in the last three games and have lost seven of eight. Darcy Kuemper stopped 26 shots.

''We're close, but we don't get points being close,'' Ekman-Larsson said. ''We're trying to get back in the race and we're trying to find our game right now.''

This was the first meeting between the teams since their offseason trade that sent Max Domi to Montreal and Alex Galchenyuk to Arizona.

''That was fun. So many memories here,'' Domi said. ''It was like, emotional. I was only here for three years but it felt like 20.''

The Canadiens started the second period on a power play after the Coyotes' Nick Cousins checked Jeff Petry against the boards just before the first period horn. Cousins was whistled for high-sticking on the hit.

Montreal took advantage of the extra man 22 seconds into the second to take a 1-0 lead. Off a draw, Jonathan Drouin passed to Petry, who fed Weber for an uncontested shot from distance that beat Kuemper.

''I thought guys just dug in,'' Weber said.

Arizona answered at 6:49 on a power play of its own. Jakob Chychrun tipped the puck out of traffic to Nick Schmaltz, who set up Ekman-Larsson for the Coyotes captain's fourth. Ekman-Larrson now has 13 points in 13 career games against the Canadiens, and his 47 power-play goals since 2013 are most among NHL defensemen.

The Coyotes got close to taking the lead but Price had a number of quick-reflex stops. One of those came off his left leg pad without him seeing the puck.

''Carey Price is world class,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''I thought we missed the net a couple of times when we had people in front. We've got to hit those nets. But guys worked hard.''

The Canadiens took the lead for good at 1:16 of the third with Byron's eighth goal.

Notes: Domi, who totaled 135 points with the Coyotes, got two video board welcomes, one each in the first and third periods. He received warm applause and offered a quick wave after the second announcement. ''It's an honor for sure. It was a lot of fun to play here,'' Domi said. ... The Coyotes called up F Conor Garland and G Adin Hill from AHL Tucson before Thursday's game, a day after assigning them to Tucson. Hill was needed as the backup to Kuemper with Calvin Pickard scratched and Antti Raanta likely out for the season.

{coyotes} Domi set to face Coyotes for first time since trade to Canadiens

MONTREAL -- Max Domi feels like he is being watched.

Whenever the Montreal Canadiens forward sits at his dressing-room stall at Bell Centre, he can sense the presence of past Montreal greats all around him. Photos of legends such as Maurice "Rocket" Richard and Patrick Roy are a constant reminder of the Canadiens' fabled history, which includes 24 Stanley Cup titles.

Domi need only peer over his left shoulder while putting on his equipment to see the image of Hockey Hall of Famer Jean Beliveau staring back at him.

"It's surreal, right?" he said recently. "It doesn't really sink in. It still hasn't sunk in. I don't know if it ever will. But to wear the same jersey and same logo that those guys all wear, whether it's Guy Lafleur, Jean Beliveau, Patrick Roy, the list goes on. Even if you can kind of learn whatever you can and implement that in the smallest fraction possible, you're going to have a pretty good career.

"It's a huge honor to wear that jersey and it's a privilege. So you make the most of it, work hard every day and you're respectful. You're paying respects to the guys who wore it before you."

Domi, 23, has welcomed the tradition and spotlight of Montreal from the moment he was traded to the Canadiens by the Arizona Coyotes for forward Alex Galchenyuk on June 15. Six months later, he'll face his former team for the first time when the Canadiens visit the Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Thursday (9 p.m. ET; FS-A, TSN2, RDS, NHL.TV).

"It's going to be weird, for sure," Domi said. "I've never been traded in my life, so it'll be different. But it'll be cool to see some of the old training staff and coaches and obviously my teammates. I'm definitely excited for it."

Domi, who was selected No. 12 by the Coyotes in the 2013 NHL Draft, had 135 points (36 goals, 99 assists) in 222 games over three seasons with Arizona.

"You didn't get recognized much there," he said.

The same can't be said for life in Montreal, where the sport is part of the cultural fabric of the community. Domi is comfortable in such a hockey fishbowl, having grown up in it while his father, Tie, was playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1995-2006.

With players such as Mats Sundin and Curtis Joseph around, it was the type of environment that prepared Max at a young age for the constant attention that comes with playing in Montreal. In the process he also learned that the best players in the game put in countless hours of sweat to be just that.

"Yeah, I think obviously on the ice is one thing, but then off the ice, seeing how hard those guys worked in all that stuff, it translates to how I came into the NHL myself, taking those habits and trying to put them into my daily routine," Domi said. "When you're 5, 6 years old and you see guys like Mats Sundin after a game, sweating on a bike after an overtime win, that sticks with you your whole life and those are the lessons I've learned."

It also helped him deal with the spotlight.

"The tradition of hockey as part of life in Montreal is so deep rooted and Max has embraced it from Day One," said Tie, 49. "He knew what he was walking into. He knows the NHL life. It's kind of what he grew up in in Toronto. And now he's living his dream. Not to take away anything away from Arizona. He played three years there. He really enjoyed himself there. But then he was traded to Montreal. And now it seems he's really embraced the pressure.

"I think he's adapted so quickly because he was around so many great players and role models since he was a kid. Mats, Mario (Lemieux), Teemu (Selanne), those guys are my close friends. They're his uncles. He's been around them his entire life. And he saw how humble they were no matter how much success they had. Especially Mats and Mario, they've prepared him for the next stage. He takes what they say to heart far more than he does me, especially when it comes to scoring goals. He's matured a lot. He jokes now, he says he wishes he would have listened to me earlier."

Joseph, the Maple Leafs' starting goalie from 1998-2002, said it wasn't from a lack of trying on Tie's part.

"I remember all you would hear from the boards was Tie yelling, 'Max, Max Max,' when Max was out on the ice playing as a boy," Joseph said with a laugh.

On game nights in Toronto, young Max would spend hours playing ministick hockey with two of Joseph's sons, Taylor and Tristan, in the team family room. Taylor was a year older than Max, Tristan a year younger.

"They'd gang up and try to intimidate Max," Joseph said. "But it's hard to intimidate a Domi.

"The man Max has grown into is amazing and inspirational. Coming into Montreal, he could have handled it two ways. He could have arrived with a sense of entitlement, being the son of a well-known ex-NHLer. But it says a lot that he's done it with humility and respect."

Never moreso than when it came time to choose his number with the Canadiens: No. 13 in honor of Sundin, the Hall of Fame forward who was captain of the Maple Leafs from 1997-2008.

"He called me and asked me if he could wear it," Sundin said. "I mean, he's not even playing for the Leafs and he still wanted my permission. I was flattered and honored by that."

Sundin, who lives in his native Sweden, flew to Toronto for the NHL Alumni Awards Gala on Oct. 22, then traveled to Montreal the next day to see Max and the Canadiens host the Calgary Flames. Max didn't disappoint, getting two assists in Montreal's 3-2 win.

"I wasn't going back to Sweden without seeing him play," Sundin said. "I'm so proud of him. I mean, he certainly didn't learn how to score like that from his dad."

Tie had 245 points (104 goals, 141 assists) in 1,020 NHL games with the Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers; Max has 168 points (50 goals, 118 assists) in 257 NHL games, including a Canadiens-high 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) in 35 games, primarily playing on a line with Jonathan Drouin (29 points; 11 goals, 18 assists).

"We're close off the ice," Domi said of Drouin and himself. "I think when you have a good relationship off the ice, it translates to on the ice. We think the game pretty similar and we have a lot of skill. He can make plays, he's a shooter too. It's pretty easy to play with him."

It has all helped make the Domi-Canadiens marriage a successful one.

"He appreciates being an NHL player," Montreal captain Shea Weber said. "And an NHL player who plays in Montreal. You can tell by the way he's playing. He's playing with energy. He's playing with passion.

"I think he's been our best player for most of the year so far."
