TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) One of Arizona's biggest concerns against New York was the Rangers' dangerous power play, led Mika Zibanejad.

The Coyotes managed to kill off an early penalty, but were hit with another at a crucial junction. The puck ended up on Zibanajed's stick and he made them pay.

Zibanejad broke a tie with the goal in the third period, Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists and the Rangers kept the Coyotes winless at Mullett Arena with a 3-2 victory Sunday night.

''We have to be honest, we're scared to death of their power play,'' Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. ''They have elite players and we got away with it in the first.''

The Coyotes couldn't capitalize on a raucous crowd in the opener at the 5,000-seat Arizona State University arena Friday night, losing 3-2 to Winnipeg in overtime.

New York pressured Arizona early despite playing the night before and went up on Alexis Lafreniere's second-period goal. The Coyotes responded quickly on goals by Lawson Crouse and Nick Bjugstad, but the Rangers ramped up the pressure again.

Panarin scored late in the second period and New York went on a power play in the third when Dylan Guenther was called for hooking in Arizona's offensive zone.

Panarin got the winning play started by sending a puck to the crease, Chris Kreider redirected it behind him and Zibanejad flipped in his sixth goal of the season over Connor Ingram with seven minutes left. Igor Shesterkin stopped 18 shots for the Rangers.

''It was a great play by (Kreider) and it was up to me to hit the net,'' Zibanejad said. ''It went in this time around.''

The Rangers had the early jump in the second game of a back to back, spending long stretches with the puck in Arizona's end.

Ingram saw the puck and moved well in his first start at The Mullett, turning away a flurry of shots on a power play midway through. He also splayed out to stop Vincent Trocheck on a breakaway shortly after that. He finished with 36 saves.

New York kept up the pressure early in the first period and scored when Lafreniere slipped in behind Ingram for a one-timer on a pass from Panarin in the right circle.

Lawson tied it on a power play a few minutes later, beating Shesterkin glove side on a feed from Guenther.

BJugstad put Arizona up 2-1 on a flip shot past Shesterkin after New York defenseman Ryan Lindgren whiffed trying to clear a rebound.

Panarin tied it late in the second period, flipping a sharp-angle shot between Ingram's left shoulder and the post.

Arizona killed off a penalty in the first period, but gave the Rangers another power play at the wrong time - and the puck ended up on Zibanejad's stick.

''I thought we played good, but it came down to a penalty kill and they have such a good power play,'' Bjugstad said.

BIRTHDAY GIFT

Panarin turned 31 on Sunday, but the Rangers felt like they were the ones receiving gifts from the talented left wing - particularly Lafreniere.

Panarin had a defender draped all over him in the right circle and traffic in front of him, but somehow found his teammate charging to the crease from the back side.

''It's more of a gift from him to me,'' Lafreniere said. ''He played great again. When you play with him, you've just got to try to get your stick down and good things happen.''

NOTES: New York F Vitali Kravtsov did not play after slamming hard into the boards against Dallas on Saturday. ... Coyotes F Nick Schmaltz missed his seventh straight game with an upper-body injury.

{coyotes} Coyotes feel energy provided by Arizona State students at Mullett Arena

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The pineapple, banana and penguin had to remove their mullets for the singing of the national anthems.

It was a different kind of home opener for the Arizona Coyotes on Friday.

They lost 3-2 in overtime against the Winnipeg Jets in their first game at Mullett Arena, the 5,000-seat brand new building on the campus of Arizona State University that they will share with the Sun Devils' NCAA Division I men's ice hockey team for at least the next three seasons.

It was a loud, fun, fast, disappointing for the fans at the end, but most definitely unique.

"The energy was great," said Coyotes forward Christian Fischer, who scored the first two NHL goals here. "I think it's fun, something that we've missed as players, especially guys that have been here for a while. It's a fun place to play. A lot of noise from the outside about all the details of it, but we're playing a hockey game, it's loud and the fans are cheering for us. That's all we care about. I thought the fans were great. Cool little rink."

Fans at Mullett Arena cheer on the Arizona Coyotes against the Winnipeg Jets

The fans were welcomed into the building more than 90 minutes before puck drop and greeted at their seats by a special giveaway -- fake mullets attached to headbands that read "GO COYOTES GO" on the front and "YOU DO YOU" the back.

It was a play on the arena's namesake, which is in honor of prominent ASU donors Don and Barbara Mullett, who were key figures in the start of the program nearly eight years ago.

Fischer joked that he was going to take one of the mullets with him and use it for a Halloween costume.

"You've got to have fun with it," he said. "We're playing hockey and it's just the way things go right now. Not permanent and we're going to use it to our advantage. That's the biggest goal."

The mullets were a hit with the fans.

"Great little touch," said Evan Miles, an ASU senior who was dressed as a pineapple next to friends Jackson Dunn, the banana, and Josh Olenick, the penguin.

Miles, Dunn and Olenick were in the student section behind the net the Coyotes defended twice. The NHL team is making between 200-400 tickets available to ASU students for home games as part of a fan club they're calling Coyotes U.

Miles is from Los Angeles and a Kings fan. Olenick is originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania, so he had to be the penguin. Dunn is from Seattle and said he was a Kraken fan, but this was his first NHL game.

He said they have tickets to the game against the New York Rangers on Sunday too.

"I'm new to this whole hockey thing and I like it," Dunn said. "They send out tickets before every homestand, so I'm always checking my email."

About 10 rows in front of them was a group of guys from Boston who were here celebrating their friend's bachelor party. The bachelor, Drew Thibodeau, wore a greenish plaid jumpsuit. The rest of the group had on matching blueish-gray jumpsuits.

"The atmosphere is unreal," Thibodeau said. "It's absolutely electric. I think it's one of the better ideas that the NHL has had because you're going to get a young crowd to come party. We'll lead the way."

The building was mainly filled with Coyotes die-hards, many who were season ticket holders at Gila River Arena in Glendale. They're also realists and understand the Coyotes are in a rebuild, so not every home game will have the exact same vibe as the opener.

"I'm excited for the intimacy of it," said Mitch Thomas, a Tempe resident whose had season tickets in his family since 1998. "I'll be interested to see with the rebuild coinciding how this looks in March when it's us battling for (potential No. 1 draft pick) Conor Bedard at the end, but I do think that since it's closer to the East Valley you'll see more people and more opportunity for a second-hand market to get in, whereas there was no walk-up traffic before. This will be totally different. I mean, the money, the sponsorships, the fanbase, the rinks you play rec and youth at are all over here."

Warmups ended and the public address announcer welcomed the crowd by saying, "Good evening everyone, and welcome to history."

Noted Coyotes alumnus Paul Bissonnette, now of Turner Sports fame, was shown wearing a Coyote head on the diminutive scoreboard in a taped segment.

"Get this place rocking because it's [expletive] showtime," Bissonnette screamed.

The lights went out. Fans in the student section held up their cell phone flashlights and the Coyotes pump-up video played.

The players were introduced one by one because this was, after all, the Coyotes home opener. Justin Roberts, a Scottsdale-based ring announcer for All Elite Wrestling, announced the starting lineups.

Then the mullets had to come off for "O Canada" and "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Shane Doan, the former Coyotes captain and most recognizable player in team history, joined his son, Josh, ASU's captain and a Coyotes prospect as a second-round pick (No. 37) from the 2021 NHL Draft, on the ice for the ceremonial puck drop.

The game started and the student section started a "Let's go Coyotes" chant right away, getting the rest of the crowd into it.

The drum line behind then banged away.

Fischer scored the first goal at 10:17 of the first period, and the goal horn was a howling coyote.

"I always look up at the jumbotron and it looked different, it's smaller, so it kind of took me by surprise when I looked up there," Fischer said. "But cool little memory for me."

He scored again at 15:28 to make it 2-0.

"We get that lead, you could feel the energy, you start feeding off that," Fischer said. "Most teams have that. Almost every team has that. It's pretty fun."

Cole Perfetti got the Jets on the board 26 seconds later at 15:54. Mark Scheifele tied it 2-2 at 8:34 of the third period, and Blake Wheeler scored 32 seconds into overtime to send the 5,000 fans out into the Tempe night with memories, even if the ending wasn't what they were hoping for.

"A new chapter of hockey here in Arizona being in Tempe," Coyotes forward Clayton Keller said. "Hopefully they keep showing up."

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Blake Wheeler scored 32 seconds into overtime and the Winnipeg Jets spoiled the Arizona Coyotes' Mullett Arena debut with a 3-2 victory Friday night.

Arizona opened the season with six straight road games before returning to the desert and The Mullett.

Mullett Arena, Arizona State University's new arena, is by far the smallest venue in the NHL and a temporary home until a permanent one is built.

The Coyotes had the early jump in front of 5,000 mullet-wearing fans - headbands with long locks were the giveaway - going up 2-0 on Christian Fischer's first-period goals.

The Jets whittled their way back.

Cole Perfetti scored in the first period and Winnipeg picked up the pressure in the third, tying it on Mark Scheifele's goal.

David Rittich, who stopped 19 shots, made a couple of nice saves to start overtime, and Wheeler beat Karel Vejmelka on a one-timer after Pierre-Luc Dubois created a 2-on-1 after stealing the puck from Shayne Gostisbehere.

Vejmelka had 32 saves.

The Coyotes got off to a great start.

Fischer scored the first NHL goal in Mullett Arena history midway through the first period, when Troy Stecher's shot from the right circle hit him shoulder and caromed pass Rittich.

Fischer also had the second goal, beating Rittich glove side off a faceoff win.

The Mullett momentum didn't last long.

Perfetti scored 26 seconds later after pickpocketing Josh Brown along the boards, flipping a shot over a prone Vejmelka following some nifty stickhandling.

Rittich and Vejmelka stole the show in the second period, each making difficult close-range saves through traffic.

Scheifele tied it with his sixth goal of the season midway through the third, whipping in a rebound after Vejmelka got jammed on a high shot.

NOTES: Winnipeg is 0 for 14 on the power play - 0 for 5 Friday - the past four games and 2 for 24 overall. ... Coyotes D Jakob Chychrun missed his seventh straight game after suffering a recent setback in his recovery from offseason wrist surgery. ... Jets D Logan Stanley missed his second straight game after getting banged up on a blocked shot Monday against St. Louis.

{coyotes} Chychrun suffers setback for Coyotes

Jakob Chychrun had a setback in his recovery from wrist surgery, and the Coyotes defenseman is considered week to week.

"He went to see his doctor in New York," general manager Bill Armstrong said Thursday. "We're going to treat him week to week and we'll just deal with it. He will rejoin the team as soon as he gets cleared and he will jump in and be in practice hopefully, but we're going to treat it week to week for him.

"We're excited to get him back in the lineup. He's a big piece for us."

Chychrun had wrist surgery in the offseason and hasn't played since March 12, when he sustained a season-ending ankle injury.

The 24-year-old had 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in 47 games last season. He had 41 points in 56 games in 2020-21, including 18 goals to lead NHL defensemen.

Defenceman Jakob Chychrun has suffered a setback while recovering from his wrist injury and is considered week-to-week, according to general manager Bill Armstrong.

Chychrun, 24, has not played since March 12 after suffering a season-ending ankle injury and had wrist surgery in the off-season that has kept him out of the lineup in 2022-23.

The 6-foot-2 defenceman has been in trade discussions over the last two seasons, but head coach Andre Tourigny told Postmedia's Bruce Garrioch on Saturday that he still is a few weeks away from returning and has pain when he does battle drills.

Drafted 16th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Coyotes, Chychrun has 53 goals and 142 points in 337 career games and had seven goals and 21 points in 47 games last season in Arizona.

{coyotes} Coyotes, Arizona State University to help each other at Mullett Arena

--

TEMPE, Arizona -- Josh Doan already has a first in Mullett Arena history.

The Arizona State sophomore and son of former Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan scored the first goal in the Sun Devils' brand new 5,000-seat state-of-the-art on-campus facility, a putback of his own rebound in a 2-0 win against Colgate on Oct. 14.

Perhaps as soon as next season, Doan will experience another first at the arena and become the first player to play a home game for both of its active tenants, the Sun Devils and Coyotes.

The younger Doan was selected by Arizona in the second round (No. 37) of the 2021 NHL Draft.

"That's the hope, that one day sometime down the road that would be a cool experience, but it's way down in the future," Doan told NHL.com after the Sun Devils practiced here Wednesday. "We'll see when that comes. Who knows. Patience is a virtue."

It has to be for Doan and the Coyotes, who await the fate of a nearly $2 billion development proposal that features plans to build an arena one mile away from ASU's campus.

Josh Doan

Negotiations for the Tempe Entertainment District are ongoing between the Tempe City Council and Bluebird LLC, a development company formed by Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo.

But starting Thursday, when the Coyotes practice here for the first time, and for the foreseeable future, they will play their home games at ASU's arena. They play their home opener against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday (10:30 p.m. ET; ESPN+, HULU, TVAS, TSN3, SN NOW).

There are few people on campus more excited about the ability to call the Coyotes co-tenants than the players and coaches in Arizona State's Division I men's hockey program.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some guys here getting the opportunity to see guys like that skate and the opportunity maybe to pick their brains if you run into them," Doan said. "Obviously, they're the highest of the high. That's where everyone wants to end up, so if you get an opportunity to visualize, see what they're doing, it's something we have to take advantage of.

"We talked to our team about just embracing the moment of being in this facility and being able to use all of the assets it has, and I think you've got to consider that one of its greatest assets is being around NHL players."

That is not limited to the Coyotes. Players from the other 31 NHL teams will soon be making their way through Mullett Arena too.

"Right when the news broke that the Coyotes were coming to play in this rink that was our first thought, just being able to see [Connor] McDavid or [Sidney] Crosby or any of those guys come into this rink for a morning skate or practice," said ASU defenseman Jackson Niedermayer, the son of Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Scott Niedermayer. "It's definitely exciting knowing all 32 teams are going to come in here, and hopefully we see and talk to some of them and learn a lot from them."

Niedermayer said he has friends at ASU who aren't associated with the hockey program but can't wait to catch some NHL games on campus.

"There is a buzz around campus with us and them moving in," he said. "It's kind of like a partnership."

Mullett Arena

One that will benefit Arizona State and it's men's hockey program, coach Greg Powers said.

Powers brought up the fact that all the ASU branding inside the arena will be visible on 41 television broadcasts, which are available nationally through ESPN+.

"You can't walk into this place and not know you're at Arizona State's arena because it is our arena," Powers said. "It absolutely helps us. I don't see how it could hurt us."

The Coyotes are building what they call the Annex, a two-story, 15,000-square foot building attached to Mullett Arena and will feature all the amenities required for an NHL team, including home and visiting dressing rooms, medical facilities, coaches offices and more.

That will stay when the NHL team leaves.

"We keep it," Powers said. "It's ours. We own it."

Mullett Arena

Powers said his goal is for ASU to eventually have a Division I women's ice hockey team that could use the Annex as its homebase and share a weight room with the men's program. He said having it will also allow ASU to host NCAA regional tournament games and USA Hockey events.

"We're going to use this to our advantage in every way because why wouldn't we," he said.

The Annex won't be completed until Dec. 9, when the Coyotes host the Boston Bruins, after a 14-game road trip from Nov. 5-Dec. 7. They are using the current visitors dressing room as their main room for their first four home games.

Their opponents -- the Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars -- will use a makeshift dressing room created for them on the rink at Mountain America Community Iceplex, which is attached to Mullett Arena, a less than 50-step walk to the main rink.

Powers is allowing Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny and his staff to use his office and the coaches' lounge for the first four home games.

"I think some people wonder, 'Why don't you let them use your locker room?'" Powers said. "It's our room. We're not leaving our room. Essentially, my whole directive with ASU as a coach was anything that displaces our players we're not doing, but the staff and any way we can help make this transition for them, we're going to help. We want to make sure that they get as good of an experience as they can out of here because it's the right thing to do."

The Coyotes had to upgrade the tubing in the subfloor under the playing surface to have NHL quality ice, which Powers said is now the best in college hockey.

Technology upgrades to allow for video replay and real time stats on the benches. They're working on extending the ribbon boards to allow for full advertisements in the arena.

"All this stuff we keep," Powers said. "The business deal for ASU is a no-brainer."

And a slam dunk for the Sun Devils, Doan included, at least until he's suiting up here for the Coyotes.

{coyotes} Coyotes set to begin life inside cosy new home: 'Certainly gonna be different'

Auston Matthews drove by the Arizona Coyotes' new home this summer.

The 5,000-seat rink tucked into a college campus is a temporary solution — for at least the next three seasons — as the franchise continues working on a proposed long-term arena.

Matthews, who grew up in the Phoenix area, wants to see the franchise that sparked his hockey obsession — long before the Toronto Maple Leafs sniper scored 60 goals in a season and won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP — succeed in the desert.

He's also curious what that first trip to Mullett Arena will look like.

"I think it'll be pretty fun … the atmosphere and everything," Matthews said. "It's going to be kind of funny and interesting being in the NHL, playing in a rink like that."

The Coyotes begin life at Arizona State University on Friday when they host the Winnipeg Jets following a six-game road trip to open the schedule.

The team played at Gila River Arena in Glendale beginning in 2003, but attendance issues plagued the Coyotes almost immediately before the suburban city cut ties with the organization at the conclusion of last season.

The Coyotes' old home was on the Phoenix metropolitan area's west side, while ASU's campus and where the club hopes to build are in Tempe — closer to the majority of its fan base.

"Everything's brand new," Arizona winger Clayton Keller said of Mullett Arena's cosy confines. "We'll just go from there. The atmosphere will be cool … there's standing bleachers behind the net, which no NHL team has.

"It's unique and brings a different aspect."

There were inevitable jokes made when Arizona's move to an arena — which is named for a prominent ASU donor family — that's a fraction the size of the league's other 31 venues was announced, but NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said it will benefit the franchise both now and in the future.

"Full building every night," he said. "It could help the team and player performance when you have that type of environment.

"It's not a permanent solution — could never be a permanent solution — but as a short-term solution it'll work fine."

There have been moments when it appeared the Coyotes would be leaving Arizona after originally relocating from Winnipeg in 1996.

Daly, however, said when the league commits to a market, "we're committed."

"The myriad of things that have gone wrong for this franchise over time contribute to why people want (it moved)," he said. "None of (the issues) were really within their control and none of them proved the market wasn't capable of supporting the team."

As for playing in a 5,000-seat facility, NHL stars have mixed feelings.

"Certainly gonna be different," Edmonton captain Connor McDavid said. "Not really too sure what to expect. Definitely hope it works out."

"I don't know," Colorado centre Nathan MacKinnon added with a smile. "We'll see, I guess."

Players with ties to the U.S. college game sound the most enthused about being back on campus.

"Fired up," Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk said.

"College barns are some of the best atmospheres in all of hockey," Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger said. "Hopefully they pack it out and have cheap drinks."

Columbus defenceman Zach Werenski, another NCAA alum, is looking forward to his team's only trip. He also wonders what it would be like to play in a rink smaller than most junior or college facilities 41 times a season.

"Living in Arizona probably doesn't get old," he said. "But going into that rink everyday might."

Max Domi, who was drafted by the Coyotes and played three seasons in Arizona, said if the organization can get the arena situation sorted, the desert will become a destination.

"Game over," said the Chicago forward. "Everyone's going to be wanting to play for the Yotes."

Matthews, who was raised in nearby Scottsdale, wants to see the franchise thrive.

"They're the reason I started playing hockey," he said. "Don't think I'd be here if that team wasn't in Arizona … I'm hopeful that it all works out.

"And you never know when we'll get the next kid coming out of Arizona."

BRUCE THERE IT … ISN'T

Vancouver had designs on making a Pacific Division push after a strong finish under head coach Bruce Boudreau to close out 2021-22, but sits as the NHL's only team without a victory.

The club set a league record by losing four straight games after building multi-goal leads and watched as three jerseys were thrown on the Rogers Arena ice following Saturday's home opener — a 5-1 defeat to Buffalo.

Vancouver (0-5-2) will look to finally get in the win column Thursday at Seattle.

PINPOINT PINTO

Ottawa centre Shane Pinto was limited to five games in 2021-22 because of a shoulder injury that required surgery.

The 21-year-old is making up for lost time.

Pinto has goals in five straight games to break the rookie franchise mark of four previously shared by Mark Stone, Daniel Alfredsson and Alexei Yashin, who did it twice 1993-94.

He can become the first freshman NHLer to score in six consecutive contests since 2014-15 when Ottawa hosts Minnesota on Thursday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Shayne Gostisbehere scored twice, and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-3 Tuesday night.

Zack Kassian, Jack McBain, Lawson Crouse and Dylan Guenther also scored for the Coyotes and Clayton Keller had two assists. Connor Ingram stopped 31 shots in his first win this season for Arizona, which won for the second time in its opening six-game road trip.

''One of our big focuses was winning the first 10 minutes,'' Ingram said. ''Not having to play from behind was huge for my confidence.''

Johnny Gaudreau, Kent Johnson and Andrew Peeke scored for Columbus, which lost for the fifth time in eight games. Daniil Tarasov gave up four goals on 12 shots before being pulled in the second period for Elvis Merzlikins, who finished with five saves.

The Blue Jackets were 0 for 5 on the power play to fall to 0 for 20 on the season.

''We didn't have juice all night for whatever reason in the game,'' Blue Jackets coach Brad Larsen said. ''It really was from the goalie out. ... It just had a bad vibe to it kind of the whole game.''

Gostisbehere put the Coyotes on the board 24 seconds into a Columbus penalty at 9:24 of the first with a wrister from the right circle, his second power-play goal of the season.

Kassian made it 2-0 with 4:08 remaining with a double-tapped wraparound pushed under Tarasov's left skate.

''We capitalized on our chances, and then we played well defensively,'' Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. ''Even if they had a shot, we kept them to the outside pretty good in the first two periods and if you looked at the quality scoring chances, we were ahead there too. It was not the volume of shots for us. It was the quality.''

Columbus killed off a 5-on-3 situation in the second period to fire up the crowd, but Gostisbehere settled them down with his second goal of the night at 7:42 to make it 3-0.

Guenther's power-play goal extended the lead with 4:38 left in the middle period for his seventh point in six games. That was the last shot Tarasov faced as Merzlikins came in and gave up a goal to McBain at 2:10 of the third to make it 5-0.

Gaudreau put Columbus on the board at 6:45 of the third period, scoring off his own rebound in front of the net for his sixth point in seven games.

Johnson got his third goal in three games with 2:36 left, extending his point streak to four games.

Crouse had an empty-netter with 20 seconds left, and Columbus responded 11 seconds later when Peeke scored his second of the season.

LAINE RETURNS

The Blue Jackets welcomed back forward Patrik Laine, who missed six games with an elbow injury suffered in the team's Oct. 12 opener against Carolina, soon after he scored the club's first goal. Laine was expected to miss 4-6 weeks but came back after 13 days.

POWERFUL

Gostisbehere's goal was his fifth power-play point of the season, which ties him for the league lead among defensemen and puts him third among all skaters. Arizona has eight power-play goals in six games.

POWERLESS

The Blue Jackets remain the only team in the NHL without a power-play goal.

INJURY UPDATE

Justin Danforth suffered a torn labrum in the Blue Jackets' Oct. 22 loss to Pittsburgh. He is expected to undergo surgery Monday and be out for six months. Nick Blankenburg, who suffered an upper-body injury against the New York Rangers Sunday is day-to-day. The Blue Jackets recalled D Gavin Bayreuther, but he was a healthy scratch.

MARKING MILESTONES

Travis Boyd's assist on Gostisbehere's goal was the 50th of his NHL career and extended his streak of helpers to three games. Keller's assist on the same goal extended his point streak to five games, the longest by a Coyotes player this season.

UP NEXT

Coyotes: Host Winnipeg in their home opener on Friday night.

Blue Jackets: Host Boston on Friday night.
