It is that time of year when I have to make arrangements with the city
of Mesa for use of the meeting room. I am taking input from all club
members on the following topics:

1) Should we meet every month or every other month. Club size is now 35
members.

2) Do we want to return to 3 fixed weekend camping dates a year and
should be not have meetings on these months?

3) Do we need to request the larger room, and would people be willing to
move the meetings to Thursdays to facilitate this?

I am accepting input from all club members. Don't like the every other
month meeting schedule? Want monthly meetings? Now is the time to speak up.

Please let me know as I am going to contact Miki on Monday November 5th
to reserve the room for 2013.

USA Hockey and the National Hockey League are inviting all kids ages four through nine into one of nearly 500 rinks across the United States on Saturday as part of the organization's Try Hockey For Free Day.

{coyotes} LOCKED-OUT NHLERS TO RECEIVE ESCROW CHEQUES TUESDAY

TORONTO -- Locked-out NHL players had the pain of missing their first full pay period offset Tuesday when they received last season's escrow cheque.

Players were returned 7.98 per cent of what they earned last year, plus interest, one day before their second paycheque of the 2012-13 season would have been due, according to a spokesman for the NHL Players' Association

The escrow payments amount to about $80,000 for every million dollars a player earned -- before deductions. For example, New York Rangers forward Brad Richards grossed approximately $960,000 after being the league's highest-paid player last season.

Under the terms of the expired collective bargaining agreement, NHL players had a portion of their salaries deducted throughout the season and placed into an escrow account. Once the final accounting for a year was completed, which ensured the correct percentage of revenue was paid out in salaries, players were refunded accordingly.

Tuesday's escrow payment came at an important time with the lockout set to eliminate another pay cycle. Players also missed a cheque on Oct. 15, but that would only have covered four days of work. The paycheque they were to have been given Wednesday would have been for a full half-month period.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr met with a group of players in Minnesota on Monday night and acknowledged in an interview with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that some of his constituents are concerned about lost wages that are mounting during the lockout.

"But that doesn't mean you make a bad agreement because of it," Fehr told the newspaper.

The NHL's labour talks have been on hold since Oct. 18, when the NHLPA countered a league offer with three proposals of its own. Each of those was quickly rejected.

Since then, a league-imposed deadline to play a full season passed without further talks and the NHL cancelled all games through Nov. 30. The Jan. 1 Winter Classic outdoor game is expected to be wiped off the schedule later this week.

Superstorm Sandy forced the NHL to close its New York headquarters on Monday and Tuesday, but deputy commissioner Bill Daly indicated that it didn't affect the bargaining process. However, he added in an email that there was no progress to report on the labour front.

{coyotes} FEHR TO PLAYERS: OWNERS WON'T MEET UNLESS THEY SET AGENDA

With the National Hockey League's lockout in its 45th day, the NHL Players' Association's resolve is not showing any signs of wavering.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr kept the players informed of where the union stands this week with a short letter to the membership outlining their attempts to continue negotiations.

"At every opportunity we have continued to state that we are ready to meet and willing to discuss all open issues, including the owners' last offer," Fehr wrote.

"Nonetheless, to date, their group has declined to commit to a meeting unless it can dictate what the agenda is. We will update you further as soon as there is anything more to report. Regards, Don."

Both NHLPA counsel Steve Fehr and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly are expected to talk Tuesday over the phone, no formal meetings have been scheduled.

{coyotes} NO DEVELOPMENTS ON NHL LABOUR FRONT AFTER THE WEEKEND

With the NHL's deadline to get a CBA done for a Nov. 2 puck drop long gone, there have been no updates or progress on the possibility of future labour talks.

"No new news," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on Monday.

"We withdrew our most recent proposal on Friday, and now we are spending time thinking about our next proposal and how best to get closer to a resolution. We hope the Union is doing the same thing. Given the fact that the Union refused even to discuss our last proposal, it would appear that we still have a large gulf to bridge."

Last Friday, the NHL announced the cancellation of November's remaining dates - a total of 326 regular season games and took their most recent proposal off the table.

The league's offices in New York are also closed on Monday and likely on Tuesday as the city braces for Hurricane Sandy.

The NHL stuck to its most recent proposal that stated a full 82-game schedule could be played if the season began by Nov. 2. The league said the deal had to be reached by last Thursday for that to happen, but never did.

The union rejected the NHL's proposal that offered a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues and ensured a full regular-season schedule. The Players' Association countered with three offers that were, in turn, quickly dismissed by the league.

Fwd: [AZHamServe] MCECG: Have license and radio, will serve

If any of you have this coming Saturday off and nothing to do, why not get on the radio and support a good cause? Time to dust off your VHF/UHF radio, get some practice using it, and help out our local Emergency Communications group at the same time. Most of you have indicated that you want to help out during emergencies. So this is the best way to get on board with a group that does.

They have 3 events on the same day. This spreads out their normal group of operators that normally jump on board and help out. So they need some help. I will be volunteering at the Orienteering event this year since it's practically in my backyard, but in the past I have supported the walk through the zoo. I have done both events and will have to say that they are fun to be on.

So if you are new to Ham Radio and are looking to do something along the lines of Emergency Communications, then sign up. If there was ever an emergency in the Phoenix/Arizona area, this is the group that would be the first on scene from a Ham Radio perspective. This is the group that would ask our group to help out. Next Saturday morning, we have three public service events. One of them needs your help. A few openings are still available at www.MCECG.org.

Summer heat is in our rear-view mirror. Halloween will have come and gone and the holiday season hasn't arrived, yet. The lawn isn't growing fast enough to need mowing that weekend. Seriously consider spending a few hours outdoors serving others with a good crew of other Radio Amateurs.

1. WALK, in town. The Multiple Sclerosis Society is putting on their Walk on the Wild Side, a casual stroll through the Phoenix Zoo, Papago Park, and the Botanical Gardens. Hams monitor key intersections and the usual rest stops, and patrol the route on bicycle. You can't find a happier bunch of walkers supporting a better cause. Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disorder that strikes young adults and older. The MS Society uses the money from events like this to provide support to Arizona's MS patients as well as to help search for a cure.

This event is good for beginners and intermediates in Amateur radio public service.

2. BIKE, north of Wickenburg. The Bullshifters Bicycling Club (funny name, serious riders) asked us to help with their Heart of Arizona Bicycle Race. Cyclists pedal 120 miles, 103 miles, or 44 miles uphill and down dale on the back roads between Wickenburg and Prescott. Hams provide our traditional support to keep these cyclists upright and rolling. We'll monitor key intersections and rest stops, and patrol in our vehicles.

Because of the spotty communications and isolation of hams on this event, they're looking for intermediate and advanced hams.

3. ORIENTEERING, out of town. High-school kids exercise their map-and-compass-following skills. They're turned loose in a wilderness area containing planted targets to find. The key is not to let these kids become "one" with the desert. That's where you and your radio come in. Hams monitor the boundaries and turn back hapless teams who can't tell a compass from a stopwatch. Hams also shepherd the teams within the event area, making sure they stay healthy. If your teenagers wanted to follow a compass through the wilderness, you would want hams just like you watching over them.

This event is good for intermediates and advanced public service hams who enjoy hiking a little for a good cause.

As always, you get the benefits of working with other capable communicators, learning something new, and being recognized by your radio peers. Don't be left out of the stories and photos!

{coyotes} NHL players react to cancelled November

The NHL's cancellation of another 326 regular-season games Friday afternoon was just a formality, according Patrick Marleau. The owners' decision to wipe November clean was made months ago.

According to a text message the veteran San Jose Sharks forward sent Josh Rimer of NHL Home Ice, the NHL never intended to drop the puck prior to Nov. 30.

"The league had these games canceled already in the summer. They are just releasing that info now," Marleau texted Rimer. "Every time we move closer, they pull further away."

Although the locked-out players suggested the two sides meet Wednesday of this week in advance of the league's deadline for the NHLPA to accept the owners' most recent proposal, the league declined because the players were unwilling to negotiate off of their paperwork.

"We keep trying to meet. They keep declining. They are obviously not willing to negotiate," Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton told Rimer. "They would rather put the game in jepordy (sic) and try to strong arm us and shake us down."

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Martin St. Louis, who has voiced his frustration with the lockout on more than one occasion, pointed to commissioner Gary Bettman.

"If the fans think that the NHL wants to play. Think again," St. Louis texted Rimer. "They don't want to meet and they cancelled all november. Way to go Gary you really care about the game!!"

Though not quite as doomsday in his view, Mathieu Schneider, special assistant to the executive director of the NHLPA, voiced his take on the stalled negotiations to Brady and Lang in the Morning on Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Friday.

Schneider, too, suspects that the deadlines imposed by the 30 NHL owners have been "artificial." He calls the owners' 50/50 offer and suspicious "make whole" provision in their latest offer -- since withdrawn -- closer to a hijacking than a good-faith negotiation.

"We're a lot closer than we were three months ago, without a doubt. That being said, there's a lot of work to do. The core economics are just one part of it," Schneider said on Sportsnet 590 The Fan. "Whether you're talking about free agency, entry-level contracts, salary arbitration -- every single thing they have offered is worse in their (expired) proposal than what the players currently have, and that's frankly not a negotiation. That's a hijacking."

More than 100 players, Schneider said, were on this week's conference call, which took place in advance of the league's proposed deadline of Oct. 25 to strike a deal. The players, he said, have been adamant about the owners making good on the existing contracts -- and not just the Zach Parises and Ryan Suters of the world.

"The day the CBA expired, it was almost like a mad rush to sign as many players as possible," Schneider said. "The thinking has to be, they assumed they weren't going to have to honour those contracts."

Schneider said making good on your word is a basic principle, something he learned when he was four years old.

The NHLPA, which represents more than 700 players, is proposing agreement stipulations that are beneficial to the average career and not just the Sidney Crosby career, Schneider believes.

But as of Friday afternoon, the NHL has axed roughly a quarter of the league's 82-game schedule, and no talks between the two sides have been scheduled. The Winter Classic and All-Star Game, the NHL's flagship events, are believed to be next on the chopping block, several reports indicate as early as next week.

So does Schneider believe the season can be saved?

"Absolutely. I never thought we couldn't save the season," he said.

Schneider reminded Brady and Lang of the players' idea of continuing negotiations while playing.

"We should be on the ice. The fact that we're not is a shame. The fact that we're cancelling games right now is a shame," Schneider said. "And it's just putting artificial pressure and artificial deadlines on guys."
