PENGUINS (38-14-2) at COYOTES (25-19-10)

TV: ROOT; FS-A PLUS

Last 10: Pittsburgh 7-2-1; Phoenix 4-5-1

Season series: This is the first of two games this season. The Penguins have won the past three contests against the Coyotes. Phoenix last defeated Pittsburgh on Oct. 7, 2009.

Big story: The Penguins could become the second team to reach 80 points this season, while the Coyotes need a win to stay on the heels of the Vancouver Canucks in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference

Team Scope:

Penguins: An overtime loss on Nov. 25 left Pittsburgh with a 15-9-1 record and tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 10th-most points in the NHL. Since that night, the Penguins have won 23 of 29 games (23-5-1) and could be in second place in the League standings by the end of Saturday night with a win and a loss by the Chicago Blackhawks to the San Jose Sharks.

Ten of the team's 16 losses have come when the club has scored less than two goals. The Penguins are 38-4-2 when they score at least two goals and 36-2-2 when they collect at least three goals. Backup goalie Jeff Zatkoff has been a beneficiary of that goal support. He began the season with two losses in October, but he's 9-0-1 since and the Penguins have scored 45 goals in his 12 starts. Zatkoff stopped 30 of 31 shots Thursday night to beat his former team, the Los Angeles Kings 4-1

"I think the guys were fighting hard for 'Zats' there throughout the game," coach Dan Bylsma said, "and at the end [they] just trying to get him the win."

Coyotes: Phoenix was one of those nine teams in front of the Penguins in the League standings just before Thanksgiving, but the Coyotes have gone in the opposition direction since. The last time they won more than two games in a row was five straight from Oct. 26-Nov. 5, and three of those victories came in shootouts.

They have 10 regulation wins since Oct. 29 and have lost 23 of their past 34 games (11-15-8). Phoenix has one game in hand on Vancouver and two on the Minnesota Wild, but unless there are more victories during the closing stretch of the season it will be a second straight without an invitation to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after reaching the conference finals for the first time in franchise history in 2012.

If they don't qualify, it will be because of games like a 3-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. The Coyotes skated off the ice after one period with a 2-1 lead but did little offensively for the final 40 minutes.

"I don't even know what our level is because we're barely above average right now if we're average," captain Shane Doan said. "It's not acceptable, not even close."

Who's hot: Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby had his second-lowest scoring month of the season to date with 16 points in January, but he does have six in his past four contests. After going 11 games without a goal, Phoenix's Antoine Vermette now has eight in his past eight contests.

Injury report: The Penguins are without forwards Pascal Dupuis (knee), Beau Bennett (wrist), Joe Vitale (wrist) and Chris Conner (hand) and goaltender Tomas Vokoun (blood clot). … The Coyotes are healthy, though the team placed Tim Kennedy on waivers Friday.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 1 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Hilary Duff, Mike Comrie

Just weeks after announcing that he was splitting from Hilary Duff, Mike Comrie was spotted relishing a guys' night out in New York City.

The former NHL athlete attended Cîroc Presents Bootsy Bellows at the Liquid Cellar in honor of the Super Bowl on Thursday, Jan. 30.

The 33-year-old "definitely seemed to be enjoying himself," according to a fellow partygoer.

"He had a table with a bunch of guys and there were girls all around them."

The eyewitness said that Comrie was dancing throughout the evening and "chatting up a bunch of different blondes."

The insider added, "He stayed until the very end of the party and didn't leave until 3:30 a.m."

On Jan. 10, Comrie and Duff announced that they were splitting up after three years of marriage.

Duff's rep says in a statement, "They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time."

Comrie wasn't the only famous face in the crowd Thursday night.

Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were in attendance, but our source said that the two former pals went to great efforts to avoid any contact with each other.

Oh, the drama!

{coyotes} DOAN, COYOTES FED UP AFTER LOSS TO LAST-PLACE SABRES

Styled By Me Barbie at MattelShop.com! Styled By Me Barbie at MattelShop.com!

NCIS, Season 11 - NCIS

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Shane Doan stood in front of his stall scowling, the crimson in his cheeks as much from the anger inside as the physical toll from 60 minutes of give-it-all-you-got hockey.

His answers were terse, key words repeated for emphasis.

Once he was done with the short interview session, Doan put his head down and marched toward the back locker room in quick, purposeful steps, the rage seeming to build as he went along.

Faced with a must-win game in a season that was starting to slip away, the Phoenix Coyotes fell flat, losing to the team with the NHL's worst record — at home, no less.

It was more than the Coyotes' captain could take.

"I don't even know what our level is because we're barely above average right now, if average," Doan said after the Coyotes lost 3-2 to Buffalo on Thursday night. "It's not acceptable. Not even close."

The loss continued a downward spiral for the Coyotes.

Playing with an owner for the first time in four years, Phoenix opened 14-4-3 for the second-best start for a franchise that started in Winnipeg in 1979.

Since then, inconsistency has reigned.

Once a team that relied on its grittiness and defence-first mindset, Phoenix has instead become a team that has been caught in a back-and-forth struggle, winning some games by outscoring opponents, others by occasionally getting back to its stay-at-home roots.

Phoenix had a stretch with one win in six games at the start of 2014 and has lost four of six after the setback against the last-place Sabres Thursday night in the second game of a critical five-game homestand.

Once in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race, the Coyotes are ninth in the West with 60 points, three behind Vancouver.

"It is frustrating," said Coyotes forward Antoine Vermette, who has eight goals in eight games and a six-game points streak. "You don't want to look too far (ahead) in your schedule, but we know our situation."

What made the loss to Buffalo harder to swallow was that the Coyotes had seemed to get back into their defence-and-counter groove Tuesday night against Los Angeles.

Playing arguably its best game of the season, Phoenix limited most of the rival Kings' chances to the outside, generated numerous good scoring chances and went on to win 3-0 behind backup goalie Thomas Greiss' second shutout in three starts.

To keep climbing up the standings, or at least maintain their positioning, all the Coyotes had to do was knock off the Sabres, who came into the game with the fewest wins (14), points (36) and goals (101) in the NHL.

Phoenix got off to a solid start, out-shooting Buffalo 21-12 in the first period.

The Sabres ended up scoring first, but the Coyotes rallied with two goals in a span of 18 seconds of the second period to go up 2-1.

After that, the Coyotes sat back, almost as if they were waiting out the win instead of going to get it.

A series of turnovers led to two goals for the Sabres, putting them up 3-2. A big push by the Coyotes in the third period led nowhere, leading to perhaps the most disheartening loss of the season and one very angry captain.

"We're up 2-1 to start the second and we do absolutely nothing, nothing as a group. Absolutely nothing," Doan said. "We have a chance to put a team away when you're up 2-1 at home, and I don't think we got a shot for 12 minutes. It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing."

The Coyotes still have time to turn it around.

After facing a tough game against Pittsburgh on Saturday night, Phoenix plays its final three games before the Olympic break against teams still in the Western Conference playoff hunt: Chicago and Dallas twice.

Once they return, the Coyotes will have 24 games left to make a push. They've done it in the past, including a late-season run to the conference finals in 2012.

To do it again, they will have to play much better than they have lately.

Very long shot I know. While looking through some old logs I came across the following gaps, if anyone out there could help I would be very grateful [and surprised after all this time] In the "scrap/storage" area there were 4 F.100 SuperSabres, one was complete and in Flight Systems livery, I believe this was 53-1688. Another was complete and in bare metal, the other 2 were "olive drab" and fuselages only. By the hangars was an a complete dark blue, but unmarked  F100 which I was informed was N2011M.In a hangar was a blue F104 along with an all white F104, in the same hangar was an all red MIG15 /LIM2, not N41125 as this was also seen.Any help ID.ing any of these much appreciated.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Buffalo Sabres completed a season sweep of the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday, winning each game of the two games with a goal that came under unusual circumstances.

Zemgus Girgensons snapped a 2-2 tie with an unassisted shorthanded goal 1:52 into the third period to lead the Sabres to a 3-2 win against the Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena.

The Coyotes were looking to take the lead on the power play when Cody Hodgson drew his third penalty of the game 1:30 into the third. But Buffalo got the puck into the Phoenix zone, where Girgensons took the puck right off the stick of Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle near the left post and put it between the pads of goalie Thomas Greiss for the game-winner.

Ryan Miller made 38 saves for Buffalo and improved to a perfect 6-0-0 against Phoenix in his career.

Sabres forward Matt Moulson left the game after a hit by Coyotes captain Shane Doan in the third period.

Red-hot Antoine Vermette scored his 20th goal of the season and David Moss also scored for Phoenix. Greiss finished with 25 saves

The Sabres have 15 wins this season, the fewest in the NHL, but two have come against Phoenix. On Dec. 23, they won 2-1 in Buffalo when Phoenix goalie Mike Smith skated back into his own net in overtime, unaware a fluttering puck had lodged in the back of his hockey pants.

Tyler Ennis and Steve Ott scored for the Sabres.

The Coyotes put 20 shots on Miller in the first period, but the Sabres scored the first goal on a nice play by their top line.

Moulson was all alone in front of the crease and was set up by Girgensons. Greiss stopped the point-blank shot but Ennis pounced on the rebound and put it high under the bar at 6:08 for his 12th goal of the year.

Buffalo scored the first goal of a game for the 17th time in 53 games this season, but 18 minutes of hard work evaporated late in the first period.

Hodgson was penalized for holding Martin Hanzal and the red-hot Phoenix power play cashed in. Miller stopped Yandle's shot through traffic from the high point, but Mikkel Boedker poked the rebound to the side of the net, where Vermette was waiting to sweep in the rebound at 18:38.

Vermette's goal was his eighth in eight games and extended his point streak to five games.

Eighteen seconds later, Jeff Halpern carried a Zbynek Michalek pass hard to the left post. Miller stopped the shot but the rebound squirted out between the circles and right to the unmarked Moss, who flipped in a backhander for his sixth goal and first in the past 17 games to make it 2-1.

But as dominant as the Coyotes were in the first period, they were just as inept in the second. They had one shot on goal in the first 12 minutes, and a Paul Bissonnette holding penalty proved costly.

Greiss stopped Alexander Sulzer's shot from the point, but two Sabres were in the crease to battle for the loose puck. Ville Leino pushed at the puck before Ott got it on his stick and punched in the power-play goal at 6:38. The goal was Ott's eighth of the season and the ninth road power-play goal in 24 road games for Buffalo.

Phoenix had a power play late in the period. Oliver Ekman-Larsson had a good chance, but his shot skimmed off the crossbar and hit referee Trevor Hanson square in the nose. Hanson skated off the ice on his own power and later returned.

{coyotes} Vermette earning rave reviews as Coyotes' MVP

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- When Phoenix Coyotes center Antoine Vermette celebrated the return to his old stomping grounds with a Dec. 21 hat trick against the Ottawa Senators, he hoped it would be the catalyst to a hot streak.

The hot streak did come, but there was a delayed reaction.

After his three goals in Ottawa, Vermette went 11 games without a goal and had one assist during that span. With captain Shane Doan still not 100 percent and the Coyotes scrounging for goals, his cold snap was reflective of their offensive struggles.

But since scoring the only goal in a clutch 1-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 16, Vermette has had the hot stick the Coyotes need as they try to fight back into Western Conference playoff position. He added a second hat trick this season in an overtime loss to the Canucks on Jan. 26 and scored his seventh goal in the past seven games in a big 3-0 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Phoenix general manager Don Maloney called Vermette the team's most valuable player this season and the numbers bear it out. He leads the Coyotes with 19 goals and ranks in the top five with 32 points. He ranks 10th in the NHL by winning 56.1 percent of his faceoffs and his three shorthanded goals -- all coming in the past five games -- is just one behind Boston's Brad Marchand for the League lead.

And when Doan and Martin Hanzal were sidelined with injuries and ailments, Vermette stepped into the leadership void as an alternate captain and led by example.

"Even when he wasn't scoring, his work ethic remained the same," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. "He's been very opportunistic and two hat tricks will move your numbers up fast. Plus he's on a line with (Lauri Korpikoski and Mikkel Boedker) that really likes playing with each other and they've been a real effective group."

Vermette and the Coyotes look to keep it going Thursday against the struggling Buffalo Sabres. Phoenix trails eighth-place Vancouver by three points but has two games in hand, and will try to take advantage of the Canucks' loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday. The Coyotes are shooting for back-to-back wins for only the second time since Dec. 10-12.

Thomas Greiss, who had two shutouts in his past three starts, will be back in the net after blanking the Kings on Tuesday. Buffalo will counter with Ryan Miller, who has had great success against the Coyotes in limited games over his career. Miller is 5-0-0 with a 0.98 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage against Phoenix.

Here is how the lineups for Buffalo and Phoenix might look Thursday:

{coyotes} SABRES (14-30-8) at COYOTES (25-18-10)

SABRES (14-30-8) at COYOTES (25-18-10)

TV: MSG-B, BELL TV, FS-A PLUS

Last 10: Buffalo 2-4-4; Phoenix 4-5-1

Season series: This is the second and final game between these cross-conference clubs. The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 in overtime on Dec. 23 in Buffalo, on a blooper-reel goal credited to Sabres defenseman Mark Pysyk. On that bizarre play, Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal knocked a loose puck into the back of his goalie Mike Smith's hockey pants and then Smith slid backward toward his goal unaware it was trapped in his equipment, surrendering the game-winner when the puck came loose and ended up in the net.

Big story: This will be the Coyotes' first home game since the team announced Wednesday they will officially be renamed the Arizona Coyotes at the start of the 2014-15 season. Coyotes center Mike Ribeiro is one goal away from reaching 200 in his NHL career.

The Sabres have been successful in Glendale recently, riding a three-game winning streak with their last loss at what is now known as Jobing.com Arena coming on Jan. 21, 2008.

Team Scope:

Sabres: Buffalo has lost seven of its past eight games (1-4-3) with just under a 1.75 goal differential, including a 5-4 overtime defeat at the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. While interim coach Ted Nolan's team has been keeping the games close, they have not yet found the right formula to get them over the hump and, with 36 points, remain last in the NHL.

Nolan was pleased with the Sabres' performance in the third period Tuesday as center Cody Hodgson tied the game with a backhander, but admitted he wants to see a more complete effort.

"To control the third period the way we did, you're happy at one point," Nolan said. "But on the other side, there's little parts of our game that we need to continue to work on and make corrections on. That was a big lesson learned in a bad situation."

Coyotes: Coach Dave Tippett's team will officially represent the entire state of Arizona next season due to the name change, but it will try to make one more Stanley Cup Playoff appearance playing as "Phoenix," based out of Glendale, Arizona. The Coyotes kicked off their five-game homestand with a 3-0 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, gaining two much-needed points against their fellow Western Conference competitor.

The Coyotes will not change their uniforms next season, but will feature shoulder patches on the home and away uniforms to showcase the name "Arizona." Coyotes co-owner, president and CEO Anthony LeBlanc is excited his team will now play for the entire state as he explained at the press conference Wednesday.

"We want to be recognized as not just the hockey team for Glendale or Phoenix, but the team for the entire state of Arizona and the Southwest," LeBlanc said. "We hope that the name 'Arizona' will encourage more fans from all over the state, not just the valley, to embrace and support our team."

Who's hot: Hodgson has four goals and an assist in his past four games for the Sabres. … Coyotes center Antoine Vermette is in the midst of a five-game point streak with six goals and two assists over that span.

Injury report: Sabres forwards Cody McCormick (upper body), Kevin Porter (lower body) and Matt D'Agostini (upper body) are on injured reserve, although D'Agostini skated at practice Tuesday in a non-contact jersey. Forward Drew Stafford (upper body) is questionable after sustaining the injury at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Jan. 25. … The Coyotes reported no injuries as of Wednesday afternoon.

{coyotes} Phoenix changing name to Arizona Coyotes

Give up your next birthday and bring clean water to people in need

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Phoenix Coyotes will go by a different name next season.

Anthony LeBlanc, the club’s co-owner, president and CEO, announced Wednesday the franchise will change its name to the Arizona Coyotes next year.

"We are very excited to announce our franchise name will change to Arizona Coyotes for the start of the 2014-’15 NHL season," he said in a statement. "Becoming the Arizona Coyotes makes sense for us since we play our games in Glendale and the city is such a great partner of ours.

"We also want to be recognized as not just the hockey team for Glendale or Phoenix, but the team for the entire state of Arizona and the Southwest. We hope the name ‘Arizona’ will encourage more fans from all over the state, not just the valley, to embrace and support our team."

The franchise has been known as the Phoenix Coyotes since relocating from Winnipeg in 1996. The Coyotes played their home games in downtown Phoenix from 1996 until 2003 when they moved to their current home, Jobing.com Arena, in Glendale.

As part of the name change, the Coyotes will feature a new shoulder patch for their home and road jerseys in 2014-’15. It will be unveiled for the team’s first exhibition game next season.

{coyotes} Greiss, Coyotes shut out slumping Kings

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Phoenix Coyotes have put themselves in catch-up mode in the Western Conference playoff race. But with five of six games at home before the break for the 2014 Sochi Olympics, they see this stretch as a chance to make up ground.

Tuesday was a good start.

Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored two goals, captain Shane Doan earned his 500th career assist and the Coyotes opened a five-game homestand by beating the Los Angeles Kings 3-0.

The ninth-place Coyotes crept within three points of Vancouver for eighth place in the West and stayed four points behind the seventh-place Minnesota Wild, who beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-2 on Tuesday.

"We've put ourselves into an average spot in the league. We have to be better than that if we want to make the playoffs," Doan said. "We have to find a way to climb and keep climbing and hopefully this is a step in the right direction. We have to get even better."

Playing for the first time in more than two weeks, Thomas Greiss made 30 saves to earn his third career shutout and second this month. Ekman-Larsson gave Greiss all the offense he would need with his third career two-goal game, matching his goal total in the previous 31 games.

Greiss made all the big saves, including two stops on Jeff Carter and another on Trevor Lewis. His teammates did the rest, keeping the Kings on the perimeter for much of the night.

"We played a simple game," said Greiss, who shut out the Calgary Flames on Jan. 7, hadn't played since being pulled 30 minutes into a 5-3 loss against the Anaheim Ducks on Jan. 11. "We stuck to our strengths, got the puck out and we forechecked well. We got the goals we needed and had a good penalty kill too."

Antoine Vermette scored his team-leading 19th goal in the third period to seal the victory against the struggling Kings, who have scored two goals in their past four games (1-3-0).

After going 11 games without a goal, Vermette has seven in his past seven games and four in the past two.

"It's one of those stretches and you'll take it sometimes it goes the other way," said Vermette, whose hot streak includes three shorthanded goals. "We're an effective line right now. We play fast and we have the confidence to use our speed, on offense and defense. We are finding ways to turn pucks over and get chances out of it."

Lauri Korpikoski extended his point streak to a career-high five games with an assist.

The Kings came into the game averaging 1.77 goals in January and were shut out for the third time this month. They squeezed out a 1-0 road win against the San Jose Sharks on Monday.

"There are team-wide frustrations and a personal frustration for some guys in here," captain Dustin Brown said. "I mean, I'm frustrated with the way I'm playing; it doesn't lend itself to getting goals and getting points.

"Phoenix did a really good job. I don't know how many shots we had or how many really good chances we had. That's probably a bit of them playing well and us not being hungry enough to get in the dirty areas"

Jonathan Quick made 26 saves but allowed three goals for the second time in his past eight starts.

Doan set up Ekman-Larsson's second-period power-play goal to join Thomas Steen (553) and Dale Hawerchuk (550) as the only players in Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise history with 500 or more assists.

"It means you've played for a long time," Doan said with a smile. "Especially in my case, when you're not that good but you've been around for a while. Those other guys didn't play here as long, and they are still way ahead of me."

The Kings had a 13-11 lead in shots after the first period, but the Coyotes had the better scoring chances and got a lot of traffic in front of the Los Angeles net. Quick made a great save on Jeff Halpern and got a hand from defenseman Drew Doughty, who swatted an airborne puck away from the crease with his goalie down and out.

Vermette helped to open the scoring when he picked off a pass from defenseman Slava Voynov and sent it back to the point. Ekman-Larsson walked the line to find room before firing a wrist shot that beat Quick high to his stick side at 15:57.

Phoenix doubled its lead early in the second after Los Angeles center Jordan Nolan was called for interference for a high hit on Kyle Chipchura in the neutral zone. Chipchura went to the dressing room, but was able to return.

Nolan was in the box for 12 seconds before Doan found Ekman-Larsson with a diagonal pass at the point. The defenseman's shot deflected off a stick and past Quick at 3:16. The Coyotes have a power-play goal in 11 of their past 12 games.

"They play a physical, heavy style, and I think we have a group of guys who seem to relish that and play better in that," said Doan, who notched his 75th career point against the Kings, the most he has against any team. "Our fourth line was great, it shows the kind of character they have. In the first period they were our best line and they set the tone."
