{coyotes} Greenway, Kaprizov lead the way as Wild beat Coyotes 5-2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Jordan Greenway had a goal and two assists, Kirill Kaprizov scored and Kaapo Kahkonen made 29 saves as the Minnesota Wild beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Joel Eriksson Ek, Jonas Brodin and Marcus Foligno also scored for Minnesota, which leads the NHL with 59 goals scored since Nov. 2. The Wild have won four games in a row and scored 19 goals in that span.

Clayton Keller and Anton Stralman scored for Arizona, which has lost three of four.

After rookie Karel Vejmelka posted his first career shutout a night earlier at Winnipeg, Scott Wedgewood made the start in goal and stopped 32 shots for Arizona.

Keller got the Coyotes off to a strong start in the second game of the back-to-back, opening the scoring 5:58 into the first. Phil Kessel passed across the slot to Keller, who had trouble controlling the pass. But Keller gained control and fired a shot as he spun around, beating Kahkonen.

Minnesota answered with Eriksson Ek's ninth goal of the season just over a minute later.

From then on, it was all Wild, who scored three times in the second period.

Kaprizov's shot from the point deflected off Arizona defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin for Kaprizov's seventh goal of the season. He has four goals and 10 assists in the last seven games, leading the NHL in scoring and assists during that stretch.

Jordan Greenway tipped home a shot from the point for his first goal of the season, and Brodin unleashed a big slap shot to score with 2.9 seconds left in the second.

After an 0-10-1 start, Arizona had gone 5-5-1 in its previous 11 games. The Coyotes had improved by limiting opponents. They had given up two goals or less in seven of the previous nine games, but Minnesota's high-scoring unit proved difficult to stop.

Stralman's goal stopped the Wild's momentum, but Foligno answered less than two minutes later.

Minnesota has won eight straight games against Arizona, with each victory coming by at least three goals.

NOTES: Wild F Frederick Gaudreau was scratched and the team announced he was in the COVID-19 protocol. Rookie D Calen Addison was active and played forward. . F Johan Larsson was back in the Arizona lineup after missing five games due to COVID-19. Andrew Ladd, who had played two games after missing six due to COVID-19 protocol, was scratched. Alex Galchenyuk was also scratched after playing in nine straight games. . Wild F Mats Zuccarello missed his second game with a hand injury.

UP NEXT

Coyotes: Return home and get a short break before hosting Vegas on Friday.

Wild: Host New Jersey on Thursday as part of a five-game homestand.

{coyotes} Vejmelka has 46 saves for 1st shutout, Coyotes beat Jets 1-0

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Karel Vejmelka stopped 46 shots to earn his first NHL shutout as the Arizona Coyotes beat the Winnipeg Jets 1-0 on Monday night.

Antoine Roussel scored the game's only goal to help Arizona get just its fifth win of the season (5-15-2).

Connor Hellebuyck had 14 saves for Winnipeg, which is 1-5-1 in its last seven games. The Jets went 0 for 6 on the power play, including 0 for 5 in the third period.

Roussel, who was left alone in front of the net, converted a pass from Loui Eriksson past a helpless Hellebuyck with 2:01 left in the second period. It was Roussel's third of the season.

The Coyotes killed off the only penalty of the second period, a hooking penalty to one-time Jets captain Andrew Ladd to keep Winnipeg at bay. The Jets outshot Arizona 15-5 in the period.

Winnipeg couldn't beat Vejmelka, despite swarming him throughout the game. He came in sporting a 1-9-1 record and .905 save percentage.

Vejmelka was originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Draft by Nashville but never played for the Predators. The Coyotes signed the 6-foot-4, 203-pound goalie as a free agent in May.

The Jets outshot the Coyotes 17-7 in the first. Vejmelka had to be sharp on several chances.

Hellebuyck also stood tall through the first 20 minutes. The Jets killed off the only penalty of the period, a tripping call to defenseman Dylan DeMelo.

UP NEXT

Coyotes: At Minnesota on Tuesday night to wrap a two-game trip.

Jets: Host New Jersey on Friday night in the second of a four-game homestand.

{coyotes} Dallas wins fourth straight with 3-2 victory over Arizona

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Hot-shooting Roope Hintz scored his seventh goal in eight games and the Dallas Stars extended their winning streak to four with a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.

Jacob Peterson and Jason Robertson also scored for the Stars, who have won six of their last seven. Joe Pavelski had two assists. Braden Holtby had 25 saves for the Stars, including two on point-blank shots midway through the third period.

''I have good confidence right now,'' Hintz said. ''I had it before, too, but before it didn't go in. We just have to keep playing like this as a team.''

Antoine Roussel and Travis Boyd scored for the Coyotes. Boyd has scored in a career-best three straight games. Scott Wedgewood, who was pulled with two minutes remaining, had 26 saves.

All of Hintz's goals have come in the last eight games, and he has 11 points in his last nine games. He kicked off the scoring 54 seconds into the game, starting with a shot from the left circle that Wedgewood stopped but could not control. Pavelski could not stuff in the rebound, but the puck bounced to Hintz, who pushed it in.

''It sets the tone for the game,'' Hintz said. ''We saw that we were ready to play.''

The Stars never trailed, although Arizona tied it twice, the first time by Antoine Roussel, who tied it about four minutes into the game by getting behind Holtby and swatting in a high puck into the net after a shot from the right circle bounced off Stars' defenseman John Klingsman in the crease. The goal stood after being reviewed for possible high stick.

''We stuck to our game plan from the start,'' said Holtby, who made his first start since Nov. 10 after missing time with an injury. ''They (Coyotes) are playing better than their record says lately. It was good to get back and good to get a win. It was a very impressive mental win.''

Peterson gave the Stars a 2-1 lead late in the first period when the Coyotes could not clear a puck from in front and he punched it into the left side.

Boyd tied it at 2 4:24 into the second period when he picked up a puck in front after it bounced off teammate Kyle Capobianco and pushed it in, but Dallas went back in front about 4 minutes later when Robertson took a pass from Andrej Sekera and found a wide open right side.

''That's a good team that battles hard,'' Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. ''We hit them when they were hot.''

The Hintz-Pavelski-Robertson line had two goals and five points.

''That line has been dynamic,'' Dallas coach Rock Bowness said. ''You need a line to carry your team. Right now they are doing the job.''

Neither team scored in the third period.

''We have to start winning on the road,'' said Bowness, whose team is 4-5-1 away from home. ''We're getting to where we need to be. We want to be in the top three spots in the division, and we are getting closer to doing that. We put ourselves a hole the first 10-12 games, and now we have dug our way out of it. We have to keep going.''

TICE CHIPS

Coyotes center Jay Beagle (lower body) was placed on injured reserve. . Coyotes forwards Andrew Ladd and Johan Larsson were removed from COVID-19 protocols. . Coyotes' Jakob Chychrun leads the league defensemen with 70 shots on goal. . Coyotes forward Clayton Keller limped into the locker room after blocking a slap shot with his leg midway through the second period but returned later in the period.

{coyotes} Draisaitl, McDavid 4 points each as Oilers beat Coyotes 5-3

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid each had two goals and two assists to lead the Edmonton Oilers past the Arizona Coyotes 5-3 on Wednesday night.

Draisaitl has 10 goals in his last eight games, and McDavid got right back in the scoring column after his season-long, 17-game point streak ended in a 4-1 loss Tuesday at Dallas.

Draisaitl leads the NHL with 20 goals, and his second of the night at 13:08 of the third period made it 4-1. He also tops the league with 40 points. McDavid has 13 goals and ranks second with 35 points.

McDavid's empty-net goal with 28 seconds remaining clinched it after Travis Boyd and Shayne Gostisbehere scored for the Coyotes in the final seven minutes to trim it to 4-3.

Clayton Keller scored four minutes into the game to give Arizona a 1-0 lead before McDavid tied it late in first period when he punched in his own rebound from the doorstep 49 seconds into a power play.

Zack Kassian had a goal and two assists as the McDavid-Draisaitl-Kassian line finished with 11 points. Draisaitl enjoyed his league-high 10th game of at least three points.

Draisaitl beat goaltender Scott Wedgewood from a sharp angle on the right side for a 2-1 lead at 10:53 of the second period, the second of four straight Oilers goals. Wedgewood made 39 saves.

Mikko Koskinen stopped 24 shots for the Oilers, who won for the third time in four games.

HOME/ROAD SPLITS

{coyotes} Tourigny discusses challenging start to season for Coyotes

Andre Tourigny said he knew there would be challenges taking over the rebuilding Arizona Coyotes as a first-time NHL coach.

The biggest turned out to be watching the players work hard and buy into what he was asking without receiving a payoff for their effort with victories. That changed in the past week when the Coyotes put together a four-game point streak (3-0-1), including winning consecutive games for the first time this season -- 2-1 overtime victories against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday and the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

"I really like the attitude of our guys," Tourigny said. "They really work hard, and they show up to the rink every day with a smile and try to be better and they care for their teammates. So you want them to be rewarded for that."

Arizona (4-13-2) will look to make it three wins in a row when it hosts the Edmonton Oilers at Gila River Arena on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET; BSAZ+, SNW, ESPN+, NHL LIVE). Being home for a few days is a welcome change for the Coyotes after playing 12 of their first 19 games on the road.

Tourigny accepts the demanding early season schedule as part of "the reality of the NHL" he's been adjusting to after making the jump from Ottawa of the Ontario Hockey League. The 47-year-old was an NHL assistant with the Colorado Avalanche (2013-2015) and Ottawa Senators (2015-16). But most of his coaching experience has been at the junior level with Rouyn-Noranda (2003-2012) and Halifax (2016-17) in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Ottawa (2017-2020) in the OHL and the Canada national junior team, which he guided to a second-place finish in the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Tourigny says the biggest difference is, "your relationships with the players."

"Here you can have a deeper conversation," Tourigny said. "You can be not more honest because I've always been honest, but maybe be a little bit more of a straight shooter with the player at this level."

Tourigny discussed more about his adjustment to the NHL and the Coyotes start in a Q&A with NHL.com:

What drew you to this job?

"After a lot of discussion with (general manager) Bill Armstrong about the direction and where we wanted to go and how they wanted to build the team and the value they wanted in the team, I think all of it made me think that was a good fit. Everybody says they want to win, but are you willing to make the decisions that will really bring you in that direction in the future? And that was clear here that they were willing to do what is necessary to win on a consistent basis on the long term. So that was attractive, and building the culture."

Was it always a goal of yours to coach in the NHL?

"It was not something I was waking every morning and saying 'I want to get there. That's what I want to do.' But it was something I knew I was capable of and I knew if I was keeping doing my job every day, one day I may have an opportunity. It's more the mindset I have. I enjoy coaching a lot. I get enjoyment doing it whether it's at the junior level or the international level or whatever. That's what I like to do. So it's not like for me not being in the NHL I was not happy. I was happy what I was doing.  … I'm just happy right now they brought me here and we have a good group of guys. They work really hard. Same thing with the coaches. So I'm in a good place right now."

What were your emotions when you got your first NHL win against the Seattle Kraken on Nov. 6 (5-4) following a 0-10-1 start?

"I think it was many things. First, when we were on the (six-game) road trip before [that], we played a lot of good teams and we could not get the results. So at some point, you look your players in the eyes and you see them work so hard to win and not getting the reward. We lost in the third period three times on that trip, so I was looking at them and I was so happy for them to finally get a reward for their effort. That's more the feeling I had after the game, the pride for our players."

Did the players give you the game puck?

"Yeah, they did."

What are you going to do with it?

"I'm not the most material guy. I don't do much with those normally, but, with this one, I think I should start to be more careful about those things. It's on my desk right now, so I will make sure I keep it and maybe do something with it."

What's the main thing the Coyotes need to do to get consistent results?

"For us, it starts a lot with our breakouts. We need to be involved to make the breakouts and get the puck out of our zone and when we do that, it changes our game a lot. But when we give extra opportunities to our opponent and we run around a little bit in our zone, that makes it extremely tough because we have to defend way too much."

Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere leads the team with 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) in 19 games. It looks like a change of scenery with the trade from the Philadelphia Flyers this offseason was good for him. What has he been doing well?

"Everybody knows he's a good puck mover and he can make plays with the puck, but his compete level and his attention to detail every day is pretty good as well. We're happy about that. I did not know him before. I did not know what to expect in a sense of as a person or a pro athlete. I knew his skill set. But probably the fresh start (after the trade) was something he wanted or it's something he's taking full advantage of."

Goalie Carter Hutton is getting close to returning from a lower-body injury, but his absence opened the door for rookie Karel Vejmelka (37 saves in his first NHL win against the Kings on Sunday) to get more of an opportunity. How much did you know about him before training camp and how has he impressed you?

"I did not know a lot about him before camp, to be honest. I knew his track record in (the Czech Republic), but as a player, as a person I did not know him. He's a really introverted guy. He does his business. He has good body language, he looks assertive, and he works hard in practice. He's really low maintenance. He's not a guy that talks a lot. He's not a guy who takes a lot of room or attracts your attention for the wrong reasons. He's doing a lot of good things."

With injuries and Andrew Ladd and forward Johan Larsson in NHL COVID-19 protocol, you had nine players out at one point. Other teams have gone through it too, but how much has that added to the challenge?

"The way I think about it, it's more about looking at what we can do to be the best version of ourselves. I'm not looking much about what I cannot control. So it's a challenge, especially when it happens on a game day and you have one or two guys testing for COVID or it's an injury. So you need to make some adjustments, but I think if you keep your focus on the big picture and the job ahead and what we can do to help the team in the present, that's right mindset."

What are you looking for as far as improvement as the season progresses?

"It's about keeping that competitive attitude every night. It's being in every fight and every game and playing to win every night. We don't want to be the kind of team that just goes with the flow. We want to make sure we play with that urgency and have that championship attitude you need every day in fighting for every inch on the ice."

I read you enjoy cooking. Have you had any time at home to do that?

"None."

Any quick dishes you can make on a workday?

"If I have time today, I will make a little soup. I like my soup a lot, so that will be my cooking of the day because I don't have a lot of time to cook or a lot of time to eat at home. That's the reality of the NHL right now."

Does cooking help you relax?

"Yeah, it helps me relax my mind and just chill at home. I love it."

{coyotes} Vejmelka gets first win, Coyotes knock off Kings 2-1 in OT

LOS ANGELES (AP) Kyle Capobianco scored with 1:34 remaining in overtime, Karel Vejmelka stopped 37 shots for his first career win and the Arizona Coyotes defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on Sunday night.

Travis Boyd had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who have won consecutive games for the first time this season. On Friday night at home, Clayton Keller scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Coyotes a 2-1 comeback victory over Detroit.

Arizona is 3-0-1 in its past four games.

Brendan Lemieux scored for the Kings, who have lost four straight following a seven-game winning streak. Jonathan Quick had 25 saves.

Capobianco won it with a wrist shot from the right circle, striking the crossbar on his second goal of the season. There wasn't an initial call from the on-ice officials, and the Kings took the puck down the ice believing the game was still going.

Arizona tied it 1-all at 4:44 of the third period on Boyd's third goal. He was at the edge of the crease to tap in Shayne Gostisbehere's centering pass.

Gostisbehere has a team-leading 12 assists and 14 points.

Los Angeles was finally able to break through early in the second period, going in front on Lemieux's one-timer in the right circle from Blake Lizotte at 5:38.

The fourth line of Lizotte, Lemieux and rookie Arthur Kaliyev has become something of a spark plug for Los Angeles lately, and their effort was evident as Lizotte was able to reclaim the puck from Alex Galchenyuk in the offensive zone to set up Lemieux's fourth goal.

All of Lemieux's scoring has come in the past six games, and Lizotte has one goal and three assists in the same span.

The Coyotes have been outscored 26-5 in the second period.

Vejmelka was busy throughout the game, and he had to start off by making 12 saves in a scoreless first period. Lemieux's blistering shot was his lone blemish, getting his first victory after starting his career 0-9-1 through 12 games.

NOTES: Coyotes F Clayton Keller had two assists. He has one goal and three assists during a three-game point streak. . Gostisbehere played in his 400th career game. . Kings F Alex Iafallo and Coyotes F Lawson Crouse each played in his 300th career game.

{coyotes} Keller's overtime goal sends Coyotes over Red Wings 2-1

GLENDALE, Ariz, (AP) Clayton Keller scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Arizona Coyotes a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.

Ryan Dzingel scored his second goal in as many games for Arizona, and Scott Wedgewood had 33 saves - two days after tying a career high with 42 saves in a 5-4 shootout loss to Columbus.

Keller's winning goal came when he picked up a loose puck on the right side of the net after if bounced through a crowd and fired it into an open net.

''I thought we played played hard,'' Keller said. ''We had the puck a lot in the third so I thought I could have ended it before then, but definitely feels good to see that one go in at the end.''

The Red Wings disputed Keller's goal, which was reviewed for several minutes before being allowed.

''We thought it was goalie interference, but that's the way it goes,'' Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. ''They reviewed it and they felt differently. I get it. It's not a black-and-white rule. There's some discretion. In the end, we had breakdown that led to that. You can't leave things to chance.''

Dylan Larkin scored his ninth goal of the season for the Detroit Red Wings, who went winless on a four-game trip. Larkin has five goals in his last five games and six in his last seven. Lucas Raymond, who assisted on Larkin's goal, is among the league leaders among rookies with 12 assists.

''When we have a lead, we just defend too much,'' Larkin said.

Arizona has five points in its last three games, starting with a 3-2 victory in St. Louis on Tuesday.

''We have a group who don't mind the work and don't mind the grind,'' Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. ''For sure, it is more fun when you get some results.''

Alex Nedeljkovic, who finished with 27 saves, was seldom tested in net in the first two periods, but Dzingel tied it at 1 with a tip-in with less than seven minutes left in the third period. Dzingel redirected a shot from the left circle from Cam Dineen that skimmed the top of the crossbar and went over Nedeljkovic's right shoulder.

Dzingel has a goal in each of the last two games after missing the previous 10 with an upper body injury.

After making a left pad save to rob Larkin on a Detroit power play 14 minutes into the second period, Wedgewood fell to the ice after being struck in the collarbone by a slap shot from Robby Fabbri. He was prone on the ice for several minutes and received medical attention before sitting up, but stayed in the game.

''He's been unbelievable since he's got here, keeping us in every single game,'' said Keller of Wedgewood, who made his second start with Arizona after being claimed off waivers from New Jersey on Nov. 4.

''I've spent some time with him five years ago now so it's awesome to have him back and he's been playing amazing,'' Keller said.

The Red Wings were 0 for 2 on the power play and did not get much sustained pressure in the third period, when the Coyotes carried the play and took 12 shots on Nedeljkovic.

''You have to find a way to score the next goal,'' Blashill said. ''They pushed hard in the third. They were better than us in the third. We have to reset ourselves and find a way to play better.''

COYOTES FIGHT CANCER

The Coyotes honored senior director of hockey development Matt Shott, 34, in a pregame ceremony on Hockey Fights Cancer Night. Shott is currently undergoing chemotherapy for cancer of the bile duct. Shott met his idol, Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman, and dropped then ceremonial first puck.

''I lost my grandfather to cancer and I wouldn't be here without him,'' Keller said. ''It's definitely a special win.''

ICE CHIPS

Dineen had his first career point. . Raymond entered the game tied for the league lead among rookies with 11 assists, as well as the rookie lead with seven goals. . Detroit defenseman Marc Staal missed his second straight game. . The Red Wings are three wins from 3,000 in franchise history.
