{coyotes} Maple Leafs win 4-2 behind Matthews' 53rd goal and send Coyotes to 14th straight loss

TORONTO (AP) Auston Matthews scored his NHL-leading 53rd goal and the Toronto Maple Leafs topped Arizona 4-2 on Thursday night to send the Coyotes to their 14th straight loss.

Matthew Knies had a goal and an assist, Tyler Bertuzzi also scored and William Nylander added an empty-netter to go with two assists for Toronto. Joseph Woll made 30 saves in his return from a long injury absence.

"He looked great, really composed," Matthews said of Woll. "Made up for lot of mistakes on our end. Looked really solid."

Alex Kerfoot and Logan Cooley scored for Arizona, which dropped to 0-12-2 since its last victory on Jan. 22. Connor Ingram stopped 22 shots.

The Coyotes entered 10-0-2 over their 12 previous visits to Scotiabank Arena/Air Canada Centre, with Arizona's last regulation loss in Toronto dating to Oct. 17, 2002 - the day Knies was born in Phoenix.

"I had no idea," Knies said. "That's a huge coincidence."

The Maple Leafs, whose seven-game winning streak was snapped with Tuesday's 6-2 home loss to Vegas, opened the scoring at 13:04 of the first period on Knies' goal off an assist from Mitch Marner.

"We needed him," Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said of Marner. "Good that Mitch was able to chip in."

Instead of shooting or making a move on Ingram, Marner fed the hard-charging Knies with a no-look, between-the-legs feed for the rookie to bury his 11th.

"I was screaming at him to take it on his own," Knies said. "Made eye contact ... I didn't know he was gonna go against my word like that.

"He's got a pretty good hockey brain."

Already playing without Timothy Liljegren (undisclosed injury) for a second consecutive game, the Leafs lost defenseman Mark Giordano in the first when he crashed into the end boards on a rush chance.

Back in the lineup after missing 35 games with a high ankle sprain suffered Dec. 7, Woll didn't have much to do at the other end until he stretched to make a nice stop on Barrett Hayton, whose group was without leading scorer Clayton Keller (undisclosed) for a second straight game.

"I've really been missing playing," Woll said. "To be able to play at our home building and to get a win like that was pretty nice."

Toronto forward Ryan Reaves fought Liam O'Brien late in the period, with the Leafs tough guy scoring a takedown before pointing to his right biceps to a roaring crowd.

Bertuzzi doubled the lead 65 seconds into the second when he tipped William Lagesson's point shot for his fifth goal in the last three games.

Matthews, who had gone two straight games without scoring after finding the back of the net 10 times in his five previous contests, scored his 53rd at 13:12 off a setup by Nylander.

Kerfoot, who played four seasons with Toronto from 2019 to 2023, made his return to Scotiabank Arena and scored his 10th on a short-handed breakaway at 14:39.

Cooley cut the deficit to 3-2 at 9:52 with his ninth.

"Our guys never quit," Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. "Disappointing the way we started."

DEAL FOR DEFENSEMAN

The Maple Leafs acquired defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin from the Anaheim Ducks in a three-team trade involving Carolina after the game.

Anaheim received Toronto's third-round pick in 2025 in the deal, while Carolina gets Toronto's sixth-round pick in the 2024 draft. Toronto also got the reserve rights to KHL forward Kirill Slepets from Carolina in the deal.

COSTLY

Keefe, who got his 200th win Thursday, was fined $25,000 by the NHL for "unprofessional conduct directed at the officials that resulted in a game misconduct" in the closing minutes of Tuesday's loss.

{coyotes} Keller likely out until next week for Coyotes

Clayton Keller likely will be sidelined until next week for the Coyotes because of an upper-body injury.

The forward was injured in a 4-3 overtime loss at the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. He did not play in a 4-2 loss at the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.

Keller wore a non-contact jersey at the morning skate, but will not play at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; SNO, SCRIPPS) or at the Ottawa Senators on Friday.

"Day to day but not tomorrow," Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. "It'll be a few days at least. Washington (on Sunday) is a stretch so next week."

Keller leads Arizona in goals (22), assists (30) and points (52).

Re: [cactuswings 4640] Arizona storage

I thought you were stopping by on your trip to Phoenix!!

The new roads, and warehouses has opened up opportunities at GYR for noting the aircraft. I think now, you can almost everything without too much bother unless it is tucked away in the hangars.

Don't stop on Bullard Ave, it's the dual carriage way that runs between the baseball field, and the airport from Estrella, to Yuma Rd.  The police will move you on, (they are quite friendly about it), because it is a fast road, and last thing they want is someone crashing into your car!

It is also possible to drive along the fence from the turn around spot at the south west end of the new warehouses, although the kerb is a bit high!

Also note, unless it is posted as private parking, you can go into these warehouse lots and park! Without proper signs, there really isn't much that can be done by the warehouse owner!

Hi all,
I am a last minute trip to Phoenix this Thursday for 2 days and wondered if anyone has a recent storage list for Marana Pinal, Coolidge and Goodyear please?

I have read that you can no longer drive the fence at Goodyear, if anyone has any further recent information on this it would be great.

I hope to have the logs on here next week.

Many thanks

Montembeault boosted his record to 13-10-4. He lost his shutout bid when Alex Kerfoot scored at 7:42 of the second period to cut the Montreal lead to 2-1.

Nick Bjugstad added the other goal for Arizona, with 5:37 remaining.

{coyotes} Kyle Connor scores 2nd goal of night in OT to lifts Jets past Coyotes, 4-3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Kyle Connor scored his second goal of the game on a 3-on-1 break in overtime to give the Winnipeg Jets a 4-3 victory over Arizona on Sunday night, extending the Coyotes' losing streak to 12 games.

Connor scored from the right side after two Arizona players fell deep in the other end of the ice after a failed breakaway attempt.

Mark Scheifele had a goal and three assists, Gabriel Vilardi also scored and Josh Morrissey had three assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves to help Winnipeg improve to 36-15-5 with its third straight victory and sixth in seven games.

Nick Schmaltz scored twice, Matias Maccelli added a goal and Connor Ingram stopped 28 shots for Arizona in the opener of a five-game trip. The Coyotes dropped to 23-29-5, going 0-10-2 during the skid.

Arizona, the franchise that began play in Winnipeg in the World Hockey Association. hasn't beaten Winnipeg since Nov. 29, 2021. Winnipeg has won all four games against the Coyotes this season, and 10 consecutive matches.

Coyotes forward Clayton Keller left the game in the second period and the team announced the scoring leader wouldn't return because of an upper-body injury.

The Jets led 3-1 after the first period, with Maccelli scoring early in the second and Schmaltz 1:04 into the third to tied it.

The teams combined for three power-play goals in the first period.

Scheifele opened the scoring at even strength at 2:06, and Schmaltz tied it on the power play with 6:15 left. Connor scored a minute later with the man advantage, and Vilardi made it 3-1 on a power play with goal with 3:26 to go.

Connor leads the Jets with 23 goals. He has scored in three straight games and extended his points streak to a season-high five games.

{coyotes} Ruzicka clears unconditional waivers; will have his contract terminated by Coyotes

Adam Ruzicka cleared unconditional waivers on Saturday and will have his contract terminated by the Arizona Coyotes, reports TSN's Chris Johnston.

The National Hockey League Players' Association has up to 60 days to file a grievance on his behalf.

The 24-year-old centre is without a point in three games with the Coyotes since being claimed off of waivers from the Calgary Flames last month. He had three goals and six assists over 39 games with the Flames prior to the move.

The native of Slovakia was selected by the Flames in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft and has recorded 14 goals with 26 assists over 117 career games in the NHL.

{coyotes} Coyotes will be sellers following 11-game skid, GM says

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Coyotes' run of 11 straight losses (0-10-1) has pushed them into being sellers prior to the trade deadline, general manager Bill Armstrong told The Athletic on Friday. Arizona (23-29-4) was 23-19-3 and contending for a playoff spot before the slide but has fallen 12 points behind the St. Louis Blues for the second wild card in the Western Conference.

That made the decision easy for Armstrong.

"Yeah, I've been open and transparent with our fan base and our players in the sense that they'll dictate where we're going, whether we're buyers or sellers," Armstrong said. "And at this point, we're not rich as an organization to go down a road and not receive assets if we're not going to get into the playoffs."

Forward Jason Zucker, who signed a one-year contract with the Coyotes on July 1, and defenseman Matt Dumba, who signed a one-year contract on Aug. 7, are eligible to become unrestricted free agents this offseason, and are the leading candidates to be traded for pieces of the future.

Zucker has 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 46 games this season after the 32-year-old had 48 points (27 goals, 21 assists) in 78 games last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dumba has nine points (four goals, five assists) in 52 games and the 29-year-old is third on the Coyotes in averaging 20:02 in ice time per game.

{coyotes} Arizona Coyotes move to terminate Adam Ruzicka’s contract after social media video surfaces

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Arizona Coyotes have put forward Adam Ruzicka on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract.

The move comes after Ruzicka posted to social media a video of a himself with a white powder appearing to be cocaine and a credit card on a counter. The team announced Friday that Ruzicka was going on waivers for termination purposes and said it would have no further comment at this time.

Ruzicka is in the second season of a two-year contract worth $1.525 million. He has only been with the Coyotes for about a month since they claimed him off waivers from the Calgary Flames on Jan. 25.

The 24-year-old from Slovakia has no points in three games with Arizona after nine in 39 with Calgary. He has played in 117 NHL games since making his debut in April 2021.

Ruzicka is the second player in the league this season to have his contract terminated, following Corey Perry with Chicago Blackhawks after they said the veteran winger violated team workplace policy. The NHL Players' Association asked for and was granted an extension of the window for Perry to file a grievance, and he's back playing with Edmonton.

There is precedent for the NHL to punish players for off-ice conduct such as Ruzicka's. Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov was suspended three games in 2019 for "inappropriate conduct," less than a month after he was banned from playing for Russia for four years because of a positive test for cocaine.

Kuznetsov faced allegations of drug use at the world championships that year after a video posted on social media showed him near a table with lines of white powder and American dollar bills.

{coyotes} Auston Matthews scores 50th, 51st goals in hometown return to help Maple Leafs beat Coyotes, 6-3

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Auston Matthews scored his 50th and 51st goals of the season in his hometown to become the fastest U.S.-born player to reach 50 and help the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the crumbling Arizona Coyotes 6-3 on Wednesday night.

Matthews' milestone goal came on a power play 5:01 into the game, his 54th game of the season - making him the fastest player to score 50 in a season since Mario Lemieux did it in 50 games in 1995-96. Wayne Gretzky holds the record, scoring his 50th in his 39th game for Edmonton in 1981-82.

Matthews scored off a rebound in the second period to make it 4-2. The 26-year-old center from nearby Scottsdale has nine goals in his last four games and 350 in his career in 535 games.

Matthews and the Maple Leafs sent the Coyotes to their 11th straight loss.

William Nylander also scored twice for the Maple Leafs, who won their fifth in a row - all without forward Morgan Rielly, who was serving final game of a five-game suspension for cross-checking Ottawa's Ridly Greig for showboating on an empty-net goal. Toronto is 9-0-2 in its last 11 games, and snapped a four-game losing streak against the Coyotes. The teams meet again Feb. 29 in Toronto.

Bobby McMann and John Tavares also scored for Toronto, and Mitch Marner and T.J. Brodie each had three assists. Ilya Samsonov stopped 23 shots.

Matias Maccelli, Barrett Hayton and Dylan Guenther scored for the Coyotes.

Arizona trailed 3-0 after the first period but rallied to get within a goal twice.

Guenther's goal came late in the second period on a power play, getting Arizona to 4-3. The Coyotes began the third period on the power play with Nylander penalized for tripping, but Samsonov and the Maple Leafs killed the penalty and Nylander scored on a breakaway out of the penalty box for his 31st of the season, making it 5-3.

{coyotes} Coyotes laboring through 10-game losing streak after being in playoff picture a month ago

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes were built for the future but appeared to be ahead of schedule just a month ago.

The young core was playing well, the new veterans were fitting in and the goaltending was solid as they eyed the franchise's second playoff berth in 12 years.

Flash forward to now, and a double-digit losing streak not only has the Coyotes closer to the NHL lottery than the playoffs, their confidence is cratering.

"It's easy to play when you're confident," Coyotes coach André Tourigny said. "When you're confident, you're playing with energy, playing with pace, life is good, the sky is blue. When you don't have that confidence, it's all about how you carry yourself."

Arizona general manager Bill Armstrong began a rebuilding process three years ago, jettisoning veteran players for a cache of draft picks that the franchise hoped would be the key to a turnaround.

Thought to be a year or two away from breaking through, the Coyotes spent the first half of the season appearing as if it would come this season instead.

Arizona became the first team to beat the last five teams to win the Stanley Cup in consecutive games and hovered around the edge of the Western Conference playoff picture a little over a month ago.

That goal now seems like a mirage as the losing started — 10 games and counting after a 6-3 blowout by Edmonton on Monday.

"It's tough in the room right now; we've got to figure it out," Coyotes forward Nick Bjugstad said. "It's very frustrating, myself included. We would do anything, just about anything, for a win right now."

Arizona's skid started, perhaps coincidentally, when the Smith Group, owners of the NBA's Utah Jazz, announced last month that it had initiated the process to bring an expansion team to the state.

Relocation rumors have swirled around the Coyotes since a previous owner took the team into bankruptcy in 2009, so the natural inclination was to include them in any future NHL plans in Utah.

The Coyotes have been adamant they plan to stay in the Phoenix area and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has been a strong supporter of keeping the franchise in one of the nation's largest markets. Owner Alex Meruelo has been searching for land for a new arena in Arizona.

The players have consistently said the relocation rumors don't affect how they prepare or play on the ice, but Arizona is 0-9-1 since the Smith Group announcement.

"It's a tough league. There's no easy nights," Bjugstad said. "You've got to stick together and you can't dwell on the past too much. You want to try to come to the rink with energy and positivity."

It's been tough lately.

The Coyotes have struggled to score almost since the day they arrived from Winnipeg in 1996 and this season has been no different — Arizona is 25th in the NHL with 2.87 goals per game.

Goaltending, a strength early on, hasn't been the same during the streak.

Tourigny started the season by saying he would go with whichever goalie was playing the best between Connor Ingram and Karel Vejmelka.

Ingram was the guy early, putting him in the discussion to play in the All-Star Game. He went through a bit of a rough stretch, allowing five or more goals twice in four games.

Vejmelka has been good at times, inconsistent others.

He was solid in relief after Ingram suffered a lower-body injury against Minnesota on Feb. 14, but allowed nine goals the past two games. Vejmelka was pulled in a 5-1 loss to Carolina on Friday and was replaced by rookie Matt Villalta, who allowed five goals against the Oilers in his first NHL start.

Arizona's defensive coverage also has been spotty; the Coyotes have allowed at least four goals seven times during their losing streak.

"We're going through an extremely tough situation," Tourigny said. "We're the second-youngest team in the league and we're growing, we're learning and sometimes learning is through pain. We're going through that right now. It's really frustrating."

The Coyotes' downward trend has put them in a difficult spot, perhaps too much to overcome to salvage this season.

The good news: Arizona still has that talented core and, despite their setbacks this season, could still be on track to turn things around.

{coyotes} Evander Kane scores twice as Oilers extend Coyotes' losing streak to 10 games with 6-3 win

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Edmonton missed on a few early scoring opportunities and found itself trailing as the game turned to the third period.

Evander Kane scored a quick goal, Zach Hyman followed with another and the Oilers poured it on to race away from a team mired in a long losing streak.

Kane scored two of Edmonton's four goals in the third period, Connor McDavid added two assists to extend his NHL lead and the Oilers stretched the Arizona Coyotes' losing streak to 10 games with a 6-3 win on Monday.

"When things aren't going our way or we don't have our best game going, (it's) just staying composed, not panicking and knowing if we hang around long enough and get our game in order we can pull it out," Kane said "This was a good example of doing that this afternoon."

With Edmonton trailing 3-2 heading into the third period, Kane and Zach Hyman scored 26 apart to push the Oilers into the lead. Kane scored again on a deflection less than two minutes later and Warren Foegele sealed it with an empty-net goal.

Leon Draisaitl and Mattias Janmark also scored for Edmonton, and Stuart Skinner had 22 saves. McDavid had assists on the first and last goals, pushing his season total to 62.

"Good teams are able to put together long streaks and good teams also don't put long losing streaks together," Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said. "Obviously, getting back to back (wins) feels good. We just want to build on that."

The Coyotes have built momentum in the wrong direction.

Arizona's Nick Bjugstad scored twice and Matt Villalta made 20 saves in his first NHL start. Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist to become the fifth Coyotes player to have at least four 50-point seasons.

Arizona has allowed at least four goals seven times during its losing streak.

"It's too bad because we did a lot of good things," Coyotes coach André Tourigny said. "We break down and we cannot stop the bleeding. They have three scoring chances and three goals right there."

The Coyotes played well against Colorado on Sunday, but lost 4-3 and had a short turnaround before facing one of the NHL's highest-scoring teams.

The Oilers jumped on them quickly, scoring on a power play when Draisaitl beat Villalta from a tight angle on a give-and-go with McDavid.

Bjugstad got it right back, beating Skinner from the right circle after keeping it on a 2-on-1. Janmark answered a few minutes later, redirecting a shot by Brett Kulak past Villalta.

The Oilers later hit the post twice in first period and Keller tied it on a power play early in the second off rapid-fire back-and-forth passing with Nick Schmaltz.

Bjugstad put the Coyotes up 3-2 midway through the second period, beating Skinner stick side after the Oilers got caught on a line change.

"It's tough in the room right now; we've got to figure it out," Bjugstad said. "It's very frustrating, myself included. We would do anything, just about anything, for a win right now."
