Western USA Trip Log Day 8 (Tue 2 Apr 13) MJV/Calif. City/VCV/SBD/RIV/RAL/Perris/SNA/LGB/LAX
Tuesday 2 April started with a lap of Mojave, although a full log was not made as none of us needed the Air Canada and Aerocalifornia aircraft that have been here for some time. However full logs of the fairly recent arrivals, the Southern Air 747 and ATI DC-8s fleets, were made. After Mojave we headed to California City where ten and a half Gulfstream II/III are present for eventual part out and scrapping. Some were tied up from livery as they carried no markings. Whilst we had been led to believe the owner here was unfriendly, all the Gufstreams can easily be seen from the outside.
Victorville was the next port of call, and the usual trip round the perimeter was made – anyone heading this way should be aware a car may not make it round and a SUV (4x4) is highly recommended. We are pretty confident that everything on the field is in the log below. A number of FedEx aircraft have had the ‘FE’ part of their registration scrubbed out, whilst the two All Nippon 767s carried no marking at all.
San Bernardino was next – somewhere I had never been before and quite a large airfield dominated by a substantial maintenance facility. The 747SP is assumed as it was in bare metal with only the remnants of the blue Sands Corp livery visible on the tail. The 727s are all WFU on various parts of the field whilst the MD87 and A320 were both in for maintenance. Both biz were active. The passenger terminal at San Bernardino is closed, and whilst no fire fighting aircraft were present there is a car park and seating area dedicated to watching fire fighting aircraft operations!
Riverside/March AFB was next, and a revised road layout has removed the large open space/car park adjacent to the March Field Museum. Heat haze meant some of the KC135s went begging. After was Perris Valley, home to Skydive Perris and their Twin Otters and Skyvans. They also have an old Spirit DC-9-10 for sky diving activities but I’m not sure it sees much action. Reading about it on the web suggests it was “a good idea at the time”. The runway width and ramp size would certainly make DC-9 operations an impressive sight.
The day concluded with another look at Orange County and Long Beach where a few more numbers hit the book. The sole frame for LAX was a required treble over the Motel 6 car park J
