{coyotes} Christian Dvorak scores twice in Coyotes' 3-2 win over Ducks

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Christian Dvorak scored his second goal late in the third period, Darcy Kuemper stopped 14 shots and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on Thursday night.

Dvorak scored Arizona's first goal in nearly 190 minutes in the second period and put the Coyotes ahead on a power-play goal with 4 1/2 minutes left.

Kuemper stopped Kevin Shattenkirk on a short-handed breakaway just before Dvorak's second goal and helped Arizona withstand a late power play. Conor Garland also scored in Arizona's second win in six games.

''I thought we had a lot of energy,'' Dvorak said. ''Obviously, we knew it was a big game for us. We didn't want to lose again here at home. We brought everything we had tonight.''

Danton Heinen scored for the second straight game with Anaheim's first power-play goal of the season. Jakob Silfverberg also scored and John Gibson had 31 saves for the Ducks. Two of the three goals allowed by Gibson went off Anaheim players.

''Coaches say it on every team: put pucks on net, puck on net,'' Anaheim coach Dallas Eakins said. ''Get it into that red zone and you're going to get bounces sometimes.''

Arizona managed just 16 shots against Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury on Sunday, but generated 31 against Gibson on Tuesday. None got through, leading to a second straight 1-0 loss.

The Coyotes also had trouble with turnovers the last game against the Ducks, including one that led to the winning goal by Heinen. Silfverberg took advantage of an early one Thursday night, beating Kuemper with a quick shot after Nick Schmlatz couldn't control an ill-advised pass from Jordan Gross between the circles.

Gibson kept the shutout streak going by blocking a shot by Clayton Keller off the post and stuffing Christian Fischer on a late 2-on-1.

The Coyotes dominated the second period - 12-1 in shots - and finally broke their long scoreless streak midway through. Dvorak got it on a shot from behind the goal that hit Anaheim defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk's skate.

It was Arizona's first goal since Jordan Oesterle scored with 59 seconds left of a 5-2 win over Vegas last Friday.

''Whenever you go through a little stretch like that, everyone kind of holds their stick a little tighter, so it's nice to get an ugly one,'' Dvorak said. ''Everyone seems to have a little more confidence and you could see we were all over them.''

The Coyotes needed 52 seconds of the third period to take their first lead in three games when Garland had a shot go off a stick out front after shaking Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler.

Heinen followed with Anaheim's first power-play goal in 18 tries this season, squeezing a shot from the left circle under Kuemper's stick arm on a long rebound.

Dvorak answered with a power-play goal of his own, one-timing a one-touch pass from Phil Kessel in the slot shortly after Kuemper's shorthanded stop on Shattenkirk. Kuemper also had a snatching glove save on Ryan Getzlaf in the second period to preserve Arizona's momentum.

''To be able to not have that much action and then those two grade-A's, that says a lot about good Darcy Kuemper for me,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said.

LONG DUCK SHIFTS

Anaheim had a good road period in the first, limiting its shifts and creating some good scoring chances.

The Ducks were on their heels in the second period, unable to get out of their own for long stretches. They played better in the third period, but the extra time on the ice took a toll.

''We had a solid first period and then for whatever reason, we went blank in the second,'' Eakins said. ''We got it back a little in the third, but this league is when you only play 40 minutes.''

NUMBERS

Coyotes D Niklas Hjalmarsson blocked tied Dion Phaneuf (1,550) for 19th place on the NHL's all-time blocked shots list (since 2005-06). ... Anaheim managed three combined shots in the second period the past two games. ... Dvorak's multi-goal game was his eighth career and first since No. 27, 2019 against Anaheim. ... The Ducks had killed 14 straight penalties before Dvorak's second goal. Anaheim is 24 for 27 on the penalty kill this season.

{coyotes} Gibson stops 31 shots in Ducks’ 1-0 win over Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — John Gibson stopped 31 shots for his second shutout in four starts, Danton Heinen scored and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Arizona Coyotes 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Heinen scored his first goal of the season in the opening period and Gibson was sharp all night for his 21st career shutout. Gibson stopped 34 shots in a shutout against Minnesota on Jan. 18.

"He's obviously a very good goaltender," Ducks defenseman Ben Hutton said. "He makes some big saves and is very vocal back there."

Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves in his 100th game with Arizona, but the Coyotes missed on numerous good chances and lost 1-0 for the second straight game. Arizona has dropped four of five overall.

"We had good possession time, we had the puck a lot, you've just got to find a way to score," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. "That's the bottom line: We need some guys to score some goals for us."

The Coyotes were caught flatfooted by a non-whistle in their last game, a 1-0 loss to Vegas. Thinking an icing call would be made, Jakob Chychrun took a wide angle to the puck behind the net and was beaten by Jonathan Marchessault, who set up William Karlsson for the winning goal with 42 seconds left.

The Ducks scored more than two goals for the first time this season on Sunday, beating Colorado 3-1 at home to earn three of a possible four points in the two-game set.

Anaheim had a good chance early against the Coyotes after a turnover by Arizona defenseman Jordan Goss, but Kuemper stopped Ryan Getzlaf on a breakaway.

Another turnover, by Drake Caggiula in Arizona's end, put Kuemper in another tough spot midway through the period. He couldn't make the stop this time, beaten by Heinen to the stick side with Chychrun blocking his view.

Gibson made a snatching glove save on Conor Garland in a sharp opening period, and Arizona's Lawson Crouse hit the post on a shot from just outside the crease.

Arizona turned up the pressure in the second, outshooting Anaheim 14-2, but couldn't get anything past Gibson.

The Coyotes had a prime chance after a turnover deep in the Ducks end, but Caggiula sailed a shot over the net with Gibson out of position. Gibson stopped Tyler Pitlick's shot from between the circles after another turnover two minutes later.

"The second period was bad decisions with the puck, not getting it deep when we needed to," Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said.

The Ducks killed off a penalty early in the third period after Jacob Larsson ran Garland into the boards and Gibson stopped Nick Schmaltz from just outside the crease.

"We had lots of chances, lots of opportunities," Crouse said. "We've just got to bang a dirty one at that point."

PENALTY KILLING DUCKS

The Ducks have struggled on the power play all season and are still the only team without a goal on the man advantage (0 for 16) after missing on their lone chance against Arizona.

On the penalty kill, Anaheim has been lights out.

The Ducks entered Tuesday's game third in the NHL, allowing two goals in 19 chances, and killed off all three penalties against Arizona.

"They're almost frothing at the mouth to get out there and get another kill," Eakins said. "They've been excellent, we've blocked a lot of shots there. The old adage is your goalie is usually your best penalty killer and we've got some great saves from our goalies."

NUMBERS

Coyotes LW Johan Larsson played his 400th NHL game. ... Heinen's goal was his first since last March 8 against Minnesota. ... Arizona D Niklas Hjalmarsson tied Dennis Seidenberg (1,549) for 20th on the NHL's all-time blocked shots list after notching two against Anaheim.

{coyotes} NHL reportedly suspends ex-Coyotes GM John Chayka for rest of year

John Chayka has been suspended by the NHL through Dec. 31, 2021, according to multiple reports.

The ruling handed down by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on Monday stated that the former Arizona Coyotes general manager "engaged in conduct detrimental to the league, breached his obligation to the club, and was properly terminated by the club."

Chayka suddenly left his position with the Coyotes in late July, with the team issuing a statement saying that he had "quit" right before the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The former GM responded by saying he was leaving due to "the situation created by ownership."

From Sportsnet:

At issue appeared to be whether the team allowed Chayka to pursue another opportunity. [Elliotte] Friedman reported that about one month before the divorce, another NHL team reached out to the Coyotes asking for permission to speak to Chayka about a job. The request was initially denied but later permitted, and an offer Chayka couldn't refuse was made. Friedman reported the Coyotes made it clear the titles "general manager" and/or "president of hockey operations" could not be involved, to prove that Chayka was not making a lateral move.

At the time, Chayka had three years remaining on his contract in Arizona.

According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, Chayka is prevented from working for any NHL team through the end of the year. This punishment is not related to the Coyotes' being docked two draft picks because of scouting combine policy violations, which happened during his time as GM.

{coyotes} Golden Knights beat Coyotes 1-0 on Karlsson’s late goal

https://storage.googleapis.com/afs-prod/media/d6a566ceb6c84948969687d961156dbf/1000.jpeg

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — William Karlsson scored with 42 seconds left in regulation, Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 16 shots and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Arizona Coyotes 1-0 on Sunday.

The Golden Knights and Coyotes played a tight-checking game after combining for 20 goals in the first three of four straight against each other.

Fleury was sharp throughout for his 62nd career shutout and Karlsson beat Darcy Kuemper with a one-timer on a feed from Jonathan Marchessault behind the goal.

Kuemper stopped 26 shots.

The unique pandemic schedule had the Golden Knights and Coyotes play two games in each city, and Vegas won three of the four.

The Golden Knights won both games in Vegas, including 5-2 in the second. The Coyotes returned the 5-2 favor in the first game in Arizona on Friday.

The finale was much more defensive.

Kuemper, who stopped 29 shots on Friday, made a couple of tough saves in the first period. Vegas limited Arizona to four shots in the first and Fleury got some help when a shot by Lawson Crouse hit the post.

Vegas continued to control play in the second period, spending long stretches in Arizona's end.

Kuemper made some difficult saves, the Coyotes blocked numerous shots — one stung Jakob Chychrun — and Golden Knights right wing Reilly Smith hit the post late in the period.

Fleury was sharp when he had to be, stopping a tipped shot by Conor Garland and Chychrun's slap shot in the closing seconds.

Fleury was tested in the third period as the Coyotes picked up the pressure. He had one of the game's biggest saves early in the period, stopping Phil Kessel on a short breakaway, and again was saved by the post on a sharp-angle shot by Johan Larsson.

Kuemper was just as good through several stretches of sustained pressure by Vegas in the third, but couldn't stop Karlsson after Marchessault beat Chychrun to the puck behind the goal.

WHAT'S NEXT

Vegas returns home to play St. Louis on Tuesday and Thursday.

Arizona hosts the first of two games against Anaheim on Tuesday.

{coyotes} Coyotes hand Golden Knights first loss of the season, 5-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona lost one game at Vegas by blowing a two-goal lead and was blown out in another.

This unique NHL season has some strange quirks to the schedule, so the Coyotes got a quick chance at payback.

They took advantage with one of their best games of the season to knock the Golden Knights from the ranks of the undefeated and earn a chance at a four-game split.

Conor Garland had a goal and an assist, Darcy Kuemper stopped 29 shots and the Coyotes handed the Golden Knights their first loss of the season, 5-2 on Friday night.

"For us to come out and win was huge," Garland said. "You don't want to lose three in a row to the same team."

The Coyotes were sharp after being drubbed two nights earlier in Vegas.

Kuemper made some spectacular saves and Arizona got contributions throughout the lineup after losing the first two games of four straight against the Golden Knights.

Nick Schmaltz scored for the third straight game and had an assist. Christian Dvorak also had a goal and an assist. Derick Brassard scored his first of the season and Jordan Oesterle closed it out with an empty-net goal.

"It was good resiliency," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. "That's a tough team to play."

Vegas' Shea Theodore scored his third goal in two games and had an assist. Cody Glass scored his first goal and Robin Lehner allowed four goals on 25 shots for the Golden Knights (4-1), who had been off to the best start in the franchise's four-year history.

"They played a great defensive game and we didn't execute well," Theodore said. "We can be a lot better defensively, especially in transition, and they took it to us tonight."

Vegas rallied from a two-goal deficit to win the first game against Arizona 4-2 and blew out the Coyotes 5-2 in Wednesday before heading across the desert.

Theodore scored on the Golden Knights' first shot to start the rout on Wednesday. Dvorak scored on Arizona's second shot Friday, knocking in a rebound on a power play 3 1/2 in.

Theodore tied it 1:19 into the second period, picking off a turnover in Arizona's end and beating Kuemper stick side with a wrister.

Brassard, one of six forwards signed by the Coyotes to add some grit, made it 2-1 with a slapshot from the left faceoff midway through the second period.

Schmaltz took a more patient route on his goal, holding the puck until Lehner went down before lifting in a shot from a tough angle.

Garland made it 4-1 less than two minutes into the third period, deking Lehner with a nifty move and slipping it between the goalie's pads.

Glass scored midway through the third period late in a double-minor high-sticking penalty on Jason Demers.

"It's tough enough to beat anyone twice in a row, never mind three times in a row, so we knew they were going to be good," Vegas coach Peter DeBoer said. "We had some self-inflicted things tonight."

SODERSTROM'S DEBUT

Arizona defenseman Victor Soderstrom had a solid debut to what the Coyotes hope will be a stellar career.

The No. 11 overall pick in 2019 NHL draft was called up from the taxi squad and did not seem nervous in his first NHL game.

"I liked his patience," Tocchet said. "The moment wasn't too big for him. It's a good stepping stone for him."

Arizona assigned defenseman Jordan Gross to the taxi squad to make room for Soderstrom.

POWER-PLAY HELP

Glass' power-play goal late in the third period was a nice boost for the Golden Knights, who have struggled with the man advantage so far this season.

Vegas entered Friday's game 1 for 14 on the power play this season and failed on its first three tries against Arizona.

"It was messy until the end there," Glass said. "It's nice to get one to get the confidence up, but we need to be better."

{coyotes} Soderstrom to make NHL debut for Coyotes

Victor Soderstrom will make his NHL debut against the Vegas Golden Knights at Gila River Arena (9 p.m. ET; FS-A Plus, ATTSN-RM, NHL.TV).

The 19-year old defenseman, who was the No. 11 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, scored six points (one goal, five assists) in 12 games this season with AIK of Allsvenskan, Sweden's second division, and played for Sweden at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship before joining the Coyotes.

"Obviously, I'm super excited," Soderstrom said. "It's what you dream of from the time you started playing hockey. I think I'm ready for it. Try not to think too much, just go play your game. It's pretty easy when you do your first game like this to think too much. I think if I go out and play my game, I'll have a good game."

Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said the lower-body injury to defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who is week to week, opened a spot for Soderstrom.

"He's had a couple of good practices and we want to see where he's at," Tocchet said. "I think he had a really good World Juniors (five assists) … so we're looking to see who's going to grab it, and we want to give him a chance.

"If he needs more seasoning, we know where he can go to get that (Tucson of the American Hockey League). But for now we're going to give him a shot. I just don't want to put too much pressure on him, I want him to have fun with it and we'll just go with this game and we'll reevaluate after the game."

{coyotes} NBC to shut down NBC Sports Network at end of 2021

NBC will shut down the NBC Sports Network at the end of the year.

NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua announced the move Friday in an internal memo to staff.

"At the conclusion of 2021, we have decided that the best strategic next step for our Sports Group and the entire Company is to wind down NBCSN completely," Bevacqua said in the memo.

NBC Sports Network is best known for carrying NHL and English Premier League games as well as NASCAR and IndyCar races. It also carries a significant amount of programming during the Olympics.

NBC will parcel out events between USA Network and its Peacock streaming service.

{coyotes} NHL pulls microchipped ‘tracking’ pucks 6 days into season

The NHL is temporarily ditching microchipped pucks six days into the season after concerns were raised about their performance.

The league announced games from Tuesday night on would be played with pucks made for last season. A review showed the first supply of pucks used for tracking weren't finished the same way as those from the playoffs, when player and puck tracking made its debut in the conference finals.

The first 44 games this season were played with the "tracking" pucks that players and coaches could tell were a little off.

"I was aware that the NHL was using a different puck," Philadelphia Flyers coach Alain Vigneault said. "I thought a couple times it didn't slide as well on the ice. We didn't know if that was the puck or the ice surface."

Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said off-hand Monday, "These pucks are bouncing everywhere."

Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said before the season that all 31 arenas were equipped with the necessary puck and player technology. Player tracking will continue.

The NHL expects new tracking pucks to be available soon and put back into play after undergoing testing.

"I'm sure that they'll figure it out here," Vigneault said. "It's early in the season, and they'll do the right thing."

Puck and player tracking has been in the works for years as a way to provide additional data, enhance broadcasts and add another element of hockey for bettors to gamble on. So far, TV has been the only home for that information with NBC Sports executive producer Sam Flood saying the network was "all in" on trying to capitalize on the technology and translate it for viewers.

It's unclear exactly when puck tracking will return or when stats like players' skating speed will be available to the public.

"We'll continue to work with our partners in terms of the information rollout and and the uses of the information," Daly said last week. "I think that'll continue to develop over the course of this season. But sitting here right now, I couldn't I couldn't give you exact timelines."
