{coyotes} Anderson makes 28 saves in return as Sabres top Coyotes 3-1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Craig Anderson made 28 saves in his return from the injured list and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-1 on Saturday night.

Kyle Okposo, Peyton Krebs and Alex Tuch scored to support Anderson in his first game since Nov. 2, when he sustained an upper-body injury in a 5-3 loss to San Jose. He missed 33 games.

Anderson lost his bid for his 44th career shutout when Shayne Gostisbehere scored from the deep slot on a power play at 11:30 of the third period. Anderson's most recent shutout came with Ottawa when he stopped 35 shots in a 4-0 victory over Buffalo on March 26, 2019.

The Sabres played without All-Star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and forwards Rasmus Asplund and Viktor Olofsson, who were placed in COVID-19 protocol after testing positive before the afternoon skate. Dahlin has a team-high 21 assists and is tied for the team lead with 28 points.

Karel Vejmelka made 32 saves for the Coyotes, who have lost five in a row and seven of nine.

Buffalo had dropped two of three and entered off a 5-0 blanking at Ottawa on Tuesday.

Okposo scored with a wrist shot from the right circle on a power play at 7:02 of the first period, beating Vejmelka low on the far side. Okposo was activated from injured reserve before the game after missing three games with an upper-body injury.

Krebs made it 2-0 when he scored on a 2-on-1, putting a pass from Casey Mittelstadt past Vejmelka high into an open right side at 15:07 of the second.

Tuch gave Buffalo a 3-0 lead later in the period on a nice give-and-go from Krebs, guiding a cross-ice pass into the open right side of the net.

NOTES: Sabres D Will Butcher injured his left leg in a collision with Coyotes F Christian Fischer three minutes into the game and did not return. . Buffalo activated G Dustin Tokarski, who missed the previous 20 games while recovering from COVID-19. Sabres G Michael Houser was placed in COVID-19 protocol Friday. . Buffalo waived G Aaron Dell on Saturday, three days after the NHL suspended him for three games for a body check that injured Ottawa rookie Drake Batherson. . Coyotes D Cam Dineen was assigned to Tucson (AHL). . Buffalo assistant coach Matt Ellis and four members of the traveling party also were placed in COVID-19 protocol before the game.

{coyotes} Bruins win 17th straight over Coyotes 2-1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Linus Ullmark stopped 30 shots, David Pastrnak had two assists and the Boston Bruins stretched their winning streak over the Arizona Coyotes to 17 straight games with a 2-1 win Friday night.

Erik Haula and Charlie McAvoy each had goals to help Boston bounce back from blowing a two-goal lead in a loss to Colorado.

Nick Schmaltz scored and Scott Wedgewood had 36 saves for the Coyotes, who haven't beaten Boston since 2010 in the Czech Republic. Arizona has lost four straight.

Boston blew a 3-1 lead in its last game, losing 4-3 in overtime to the Avalanche on Wednesday after giving up a goal with 36 seconds left in regulation.

The Bruins got out to another early lead when a puck caromed off Coyotes defenseman Anton Stralman right to Pastrnak in the left circle. Pasternak quickly flipped it to Haula, who beat Wedgewood from the slot.

Schmaltz tied it late in the first period, beating Ullmark stick side from the left circle after a deke by Shane Gostisbehere briefly froze Boston's goalie.

McAvoy put Boston back up on power play late in the second period, scoring from the right circle on a shot Wedgewood couldn't see through traffic.

Wedgewood made some tough saves when Boston went on consecutive power plays midway through the third period, then had a sprawling stop on a shot by Haula in the slot on a 4-on-4.

Ullmark was just as good in the final two minutes after Arizona pulled Wedgewood, making several tough saves in traffic.

{coyotes} Report: Coyotes working on deal to play at 5,000-seat arena at ASU

The Arizona Coyotes are working on a multi-year deal to play next season at Arizona State University's yet-to-be-completed 5,000-seat arena, according to a report by Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports.

Morgan reported that the Coyotes would play in the arena, which appears to not have had naming rights sold for it, for the next three to four years while construction on an as-yet-approved arena in nearby Tempe is completed.

The 5,000-seat capacity would be by far the lowest in the NHL. Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg currently has the lowest official capacity, at 15,294.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told Morgan in an email, "While we have arena standards, we would approach the entire situation in a way intended to accommodate the club's needs in effectuating a successful transition to a new venue. While there may very well be some, I can't think of any hard and fast rules that couldn't be relaxed to accommodate what is necessary." He added, when Morgan asked specifically about approving a move to an arena with such a small capacity, "depends on the totality of circumstances, but I wouldn't rule it out."

When contacted by Sportsnet, a Coyotes spokesman replied with the statement, "As we have said many times, we are completely committed to building our future in Arizona. As part of that process, we are excited to be exploring some great temporary arena options here before we move in to a new permanent home in the Valley."

The NHLPA said a few issues must be sorted out before the move.

"The Coyotes' anticipated move in 2022-23 from Gila River Arena in Glendale to a temporary Arizona venue raises a number of matters that the league and the NHLPA will need to work through," a spokesperson for the NHLPA said in a statement to Sportsnet. "Ideally, these matters will be sorted out well in advance of next season."

The Coyotes have the third-lowest attendance in the league, averaging 11,575 per game, above only the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres.

The new arena, which is just east of Sun Devil Stadium, is projected to open this fall and is still under construction. According to AZCentral.com, the new arena is intended to be the home to the Arizona State University NCAA Division I hockey team, "wrestling and women's gymnastics and be a venue for concerts, conferences, youth competitions and other events."

Morgan added that because of NCAA rules, the Coyotes would have to construct their own team-specific areas, such as dressing rooms, training facilities, etc. A source estimated to Morgan that the cost to the Coyotes for the additions would be $15 million to $20 million.

The Coyotes have been leasing Gila River Arena on an annual basis since the Glendale City Council voted to opt out of a multimillion-dollar long-term deal in 2016. Glendale announced recently that it will not renew its agreement with the franchise beyond the 2021-22 season.

The Coyotes have played at Gila River Arena since moving from America West Arena, which they shared with the NBA's Phoenix Suns in downtown Phoenix, in 2003.

In September, the Coyotes proposed the $1.7-billion development in Tempe, a city just east of Phoenix, that included a hockey arena, restaurants, shops and apartments on a 46-acre tract of land near the city's downtown. The proposal was in danger of not getting enough votes to pass, Morgan previously reported.

{coyotes} Third-period surge helps Penguins past Coyotes, 6-3

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pittsburgh Penguins fell behind on three separate occasions against the Arizona Coyotes, but each time they had a quick answer.

The biggest response came in the third period, when Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang led a four-goal barrage to give the red-hot Penguins a 6-3 win over the Coyotes on Tuesday night.

Pittsburgh trailed early in the third before its offensive show, when Letang scored twice and Crosby netted his 11th for the Penguins, who won their sixth straight game.

''What I liked about our team tonight is that we just had a stick-to-it-iveness,'' Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. ''There was no panic on the bench.''

Pittsburgh has 17 wins in its last 19 games. Bryan Rust and Brock McGinn both scored their 10th goals of the season and Brian Boyle added a third-period goal. Tristan Jarry stopped 13 shots.

Arizona's Clayton Keller scored his 16th goal and added an assist, and Nick Schmaltz also scored twice. Karel Vejmelka made 30 saves for Arizona, which has lost three straight and five of its last seven games.

''They have a lot of skill . a lot of good players,'' Schmaltz said. ''I think maybe we just mismanaged a couple plays and if you do that against high-skill players, they're going to make you pay.''

Crosby made it a 4-3 game with a give-and-go with Rust at 7:10 of the third. A streaking Rust took a pass from Crosby and returned it to the Penguins' captain, who quickly buried a wrist shot from the slot.

Letang gave Pittsburgh a two-goal lead with about nine minutes left in the third with his second goal of the game. He took a pass from Evan Rodrigues and sent a blocker-side wrist shot past a diving Vejmelka.

Schmaltz gave Arizona a 3-2 lead at 2:54 of the third period following a sloppy Pittsburgh turnover in the neutral zone. But McGinn tied it at 4:53 when he slid a backhander past Vejmelka.

Then, Crosby and Letang took over for Pittsburgh.

Letang has four goals and 17 points in his last 12 games. Crosby, with 10 goals and 32 points in his last 23 games, is three away from becoming the second active player to score 500 career goals.

Schmaltz opened the scoring at 8:23 of the second period, and the teams closed the second with three power-play goals.

Rust tied the game on the man advantage at 11:31 of the second, but Arizona regained the lead, 2-1, with about four minutes left thanks to Keller's power-play goal while Crosby and Jake Guentzel were in the penalty box.

Keller, who will represent the Coyotes in the All-Star game, has 13 goals and 27 points in his last 25 games for Arizona.

Letang evened the score, 2-2, with a power-play goal at 18:18 of the second when his wrist shot hit Vejmelka's glove and fluttered into the net.

''We didn't play with that much speed in the first, but we kept building,'' Letang said. ''I thought we played a responsible game for 60 minutes and at the end we got rewarded.''

STREAKING PENGUINS

The Penguins' six-game win streak is tied with Colorado for the longest active in the league and their 17 wins since Dec. 4 are tied with the Avalanche for most in the NHL during that span.

Pittsburgh also won its eighth straight home game for the first time since an 11-game run in 2018. The Penguins' 10 wins in January is a new franchise record for the month.

The Penguins also won their seventh straight against Arizona and they have points in each of their last 10 games dating back to Feb. 29, 2016. In Pittsburgh, the Penguins won their seventh straight against Arizona since March 28, 2015.

''The expectation inside our dressing room is extremely high,'' Sullivan said. ''There's never a sense of satisfaction. That starts with our core players.''

KESSEL RETURNS

Kessel played in Pittsburgh as a visitor for the second time since the Penguins traded the winger to Arizona in 2019.

Kessel, who spent four seasons in Pittsburgh, was a vital part of the Penguins' run to consecutive Stanley Cups. He finished second to Crosby for the 2016 Conn Smythe Trophy.

On Tuesday, Kessel skated in his 941st consecutive game dating back to Nov. 3, 2009. He holds the second-longest active ''Iron Man'' streak in the NHL behind former Coyotes' defenseman Keith Yandle, who established a new NHL record on Tuesday when he broke Doug Jarvis' streak by playing in his 965th consecutive game.

INJURY NOTES

Before the game, Pittsburgh announced forward Jason Zucker underwent successful core muscle surgery on Tuesday. Zucker, who has missed 11 of Pittsburgh's last 12 games, scored twice on Jan. 17 at Vegas, but has sat out the last four. He's considered out on a week-to-week basis. A day earlier, Pittsburgh announced forward Teddy Blueger will miss six-to-eight weeks with a fractured jaw.

Coyotes: Host Boston on Friday.

Penguins: Continue a six-game homestand on Thursday, hosting Seattle for the first time.

{coyotes} Kreider's hat trick powers Rangers to 7-3 win over Coyotes

NEW YORK (AP) Chris Kreider had a hat trick to set his career high with 29 goals, tying for the NHL lead, and the New York Rangers scored six unanswered to beat the Arizona Coyotes 7-3 on Saturday night for their eighth win in 11 games.

Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba scored twice as New York improved to 12-3-2 at home and recovered from an early 3-1 deficit after being outshot 16-4 in the first period by the last-place Coyotes.

Igor Shesterkin made 25 saves for his sixth straight win and 10th victory in 11 games, improving to 19-4-2 this season.

Kreider scored short-handed at 11:30 of the second period to cut the deficit to 3-2 before Julien Gauthier tied it at 15:22 with his third goal of the season and first since Dec. 14.

Artemi Panarin put the Rangers ahead on the power play with his 11th goal at 16:33 of the second before Kreider scored again at 18:42 of the middle period to match his previous career high of 28 goals, which he had accomplished twice.

The 30-year-old forward then completed his hat trick - the fifth of his career - on the power play at 10:06 of the third period.

Kreider, on pace for 57 goals, has scored in five straight games and has 10 goals in his last nine. He had the NHL lead to himself for a little while - until Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the third period for Washington against Ottawa to give him 29 goals as well.

Coyotes forward Liam O'Brien opening the scoring at 2:29 of the first when he beat Shesterkin for his second goal of the season.

Trouba tied it less than a minute later at 3:15 with assists from Kreider and Mika Zibanejad.

Andrew Ladd put the Coyotes up 2-1 at 6:56 with his sixth goal. Clayton Keller made it 3-1 at 7:03 of the second when his shot fluttered past Shesterkin for his team-best 15th goal.

Then the Rangers went to work against Coyotes rookie goaltender Karel Vejmelka, who had won his last three road games before meeting the high-flying Rangers.

The Czech-born Vejmelka made 14 saves on 20 shots before he was replaced by Scott Wedgewood at 1:33 of the third after Trouba scored his second of the game and eighth goal of the season.

Zibanejad, who also assisted on Panarin's goal along with Adam Fox, has an eight-game point streak with four goals and six assists during that span.

Fox, who leads the Rangers with 45 points, including seven goals, has 12 assists in his last 10 games.

Both teams played the previous night on the road, with the Coyotes coming off a 4-0 loss to the Islanders while the Rangers fell 6-3 at Carolina.

REMEMBERING GILLIES

Rangers coach Gerard Gallant, 58, said before the game that as a young player growing up in Canada, he idolized Islanders Hall of Fame left wing Clark Gillies, who died Friday at 67.

''He was my favorite player and they were my favorite team as a kid growing up,'' Gallant said. ''When I was playing bantam hockey, I wanted to be Clark Gillies - score and fight.''

APPROACHING MILESTONE

Coyotes forward Phil Kessel skated in his 940th consecutive game, the second-longest active streak in the league. Philadelphia defenseman Keith Yandle has played in 963 straight games, one shy of the NHL record held by Doug Jarvis.

NOTES: It was the first game for the Coyotes at Madison Square Garden since Oct. 22, 2019, a 3-2 overtime win. . The Rangers won the previous meeting this season, 3-2 on Dec. 15 in Arizona. . Rangers forward Kappo Kakko was a late scratch with an upper-body injury. . New York also scratched defensemen Jarred Tinordi and Libor Hajek. . The Rangers will play four of their next five games at home before the All-Star break. . The Coyotes scratched Ryan Dzingel, Antoine Roussel and Dysin Mayo.

{coyotes} Sorokin, Nelson lead Islanders to 4-0 win over Coyotes

NEW YORK (AP) Ilya Sorokin stopped 17 shots for his fourth shutout of the season, Brock Nelson scored twice and the New York Islanders beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-0 Friday night.

Scott Mayfield had a goal and an assist, and Austin Czarnik also scored to help the Islanders get their third straight win and seventh in their last nine (7-1-1).

Sorokin got his sixth win in his last eight starts and has only allowed 15 goals over that stretch. The 26-year-old goaltender is 11-7-5 in his second NHL season.

Scott Wedgewood finished with 31 saves but the Coyotes snapped a two-game winning streak in the second of a four-game trip. Arizona failed to score in both meetings against New York this season, losing 3-0 at home on Oct. 23.

Mayfield opened the scoring with 6:09 left in the first on a slap shot from the point in which Lee screened Wedgewood. Mathew Barzal got a loose puck off an offensive zone face off and danced around Nick Schmaltz before getting the puck back to Adam Pelech who eventually set up Mayfield.

The Islanders doubled their lead 2:58 later as Mayfield sent a cross-ice pass to Czarnik for an easy tap-in near the back post. Islanders captain Anders Lee also picked up an assist on the play.

New York improved to 12-4-4 when scoring the first goal and outshot the lifeless Coyotes 35-17.

Nelson sealed the victory when he scored his 12th and 13th goals of the season in the third. First, he gathered a bouncing puck and fired a wrist shot past Wedgewood at 1:22. Then, midway through the period, Nelson crashed the net and finished a pass from Anthony Beauvillier. The play was reviewed, but the original call of a good goal stood.

HOME COOKIN'

The Islanders improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine at UBS Arena after starting 0-5-2 at their $1.2 billion new home. New York began the season on a 13-game road trip, tying an NHL record, as the construction on the venue was completed. New York also recorded its eighth straight win on home ice against Arizona.

THREE'S COMPANY

The Islanders are 12-2-2 when they score at least three goals, including shootout winners. Under Barry Trotz, the Isles are 100-11-13 when scoring three or more.

IRON MEN

Mayfield skated in his 121st consecutive game and is one of three Islanders - along with Cal Clutterbuck and Zach Parise - to participate in every game during the 2021-22 regular season.

{coyotes} Coyotes claw past Devils 4-1 behind Vejmelka, Crouse

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Lawson Crouse scored a goal and added an assist, and Karel Vejmelka made 35 saves to help lead the Arizona Coyotes to a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night.

Dysin Mayo, Travis Boyd and Johan Larsson also scored for Arizona, which has won three of its last five games. Loui Eriksson added two assists.

''The one thing we knew about our team when we started training camp was (that) we had a lot of players with a chip on their shoulder,'' Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. ''Players who wanted to either (bounce) back or prove themselves.''

Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 13 of 17 shots and Nico Hischier had the lone goal for New Jersey, which has dropped four of its last five.

The matchup was the first between the Eastern and Western Conference franchises since Dec. 14, 2019 - which the Devils won 2-1 - and the first at the Prudential Center since Oct. 25, 2019 (a 5-3 win for the Coyotes).

It was not one the seventh-place team in the Metropolitan Division will remember fondly, even if New Jersey did lead 1-0 after the first period thanks to Hischier's power-play goal 6:09 into the game.

The sequence began when All-Star selection Jack Hughes blew past Janis Moser, but had his backhand attempt knocked away. Jesper Bratt corralled the loose puck and found Hischier, who beat Vejmelka with a wrist shot.

Hischier's eighth goal of the season was one of 12 shots the Devils were credited with in the first, while Arizona's lone attempt came off Ilya Lyubushkin's stick with 1:07 left the period.

''We did a lot of good stuff,'' Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. ''If the message wasn't there, we wouldn't have come out the way we did.''

Arizona drew even at 1 on Mayo's third of the season at 6:50 of the second period. Crouse put the Coyotes ahead with his 10th of the season 4:42 later.

Boyd extended the lead to 3-1 by deflecting Clayton Keller's attempt past Blackwood at 14:13.

''We just had a little more urgency,'' Arizona defenseman Jakob Chychrun said, when asked of the difference between the Coyotes' first and second periods. ''We were skating better.''

Any comeback hopes New Jersey had were snuffed out when Larsson converted Crouse's feed 8:27 into the third.

''They're really good off rush (plays) but don't sustain a lot of (offensive zone time) and we knew that, and we were trying to be quick in the (defensive zone) and once we did that, we had the puck a lot more often,'' Chychrun said. ''That's when you can play with the puck and generate offense.''

What irked the Devils is that they outplayed the Coyotes for much of the game. New Jersey finished with an 36-17 advantage in shots on goal and out-attempted Arizona 66-43. The Devils also went 1 for 2 on the man advantage and killed both Coyotes power plays.

''It's completely on us,'' New Jersey defenseman Ryan Graves said. ''We didn't manage the game very well and it's on us.''

SCHEDULE CHANGES

The NHL announced before the game revisions to schedule in order for the league's 32 teams to conclude their regular seasons by April 29. Both the Devils and Coyotes were among the teams whose schedules were reconfigured as New Jersey had eight games moved and Arizona six.

The Devils will now visit Toronto on Jan. 31, Ottawa on Feb. 7, Montreal on Feb. 8, St. Louis two days later, and Pittsburgh on Feb. 24. They will host Pittsburgh on Feb. 13, Tampa Bay on Feb. 15, and Montreal on April 7.

Arizona will travel to Vancouver on Feb. 8, and Seattle the next day. The Coyotes will welcome Tampa Bay on Feb. 11, Los Angeles on Feb. 19, Dallas the next day, and Seattle on March 22.

ROSTER MOVES

The Devils and Coyotes' rosters were buoyed by the additions of Blackwood and Chychrun, respectively. Blackwood made his first start since Jan. 8 after being removed from New Jersey's COVID-19 protocol Monday, while Chychrun had missed Arizona's previous 11 games with an upper-body injury, as well as having spent time in protocol.

{coyotes} Chychrun likely back for Coyotes

Jakob Chychrun is expected to return to the lineup for the Coyotes at the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; MSG+, BSAZ, ESPN+, NHL LIVE).

The defensemen has missed 11 games; Chychrun missed seven games after sustaining an upper-body injury in a 3-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Dec. 10 and missed four after he was placed in NHL COVID-19 protocol on Jan. 10.

Chychrun has scored seven points (two goals, five assists) in 26 games.

"History says the guy that returns after a long period, in his first game, he will have adrenaline, urgency, he will be excited, and all the emotion will get into it," Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. "When you're out that long, it's usually the second or third game where (fatigue could show). So, the next two weeks will be the most challenging (for Chychrun), not the next 12 hours. At least I don't think so."

Tourigny was removed from COVID-19 protocol on Tuesday and will coach after missing four games. Defenseman Anton Stralman was removed from protocol on Tuesday and is expected to return after missing four games.

{coyotes} Coyotes send Canadiens to 6th straight loss, 5-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Nick Schmaltz and Johan Larsson each had a goal and an assist, and the Arizona Coyotes stretched the Montreal Canadiens' losing streak to six games with a 5-2 win on Monday.

Montreal's first trip to Arizona since 2019 pitted the two teams at the bottom of the NHL standings and the league's two lowest-scoring teams.

The teams combined for six goals in the first two periods before shutting each other down in the third.

Travis Boyd and Janis Moser also scored for the Coyotes, who were without coach Andre Tourigny and four players due to COVID-19 protocols. Clayton Keller added a an empty-net goal and Karel Vejmelka had 24 saves.

Ryan Poehling scored Montreal's second power-play goal in its last 35 chances and Rem Pitlick also scored. Cayden Primeau allowed four goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Sam Montembeault in the third period.

The Canadiens, a Stanley Cup finalist last season, have one win (1-10-3) in their past 14 games.

Montreal arrived in the desert with 19 points, one behind the Coyotes.

The Canadiens had a chance to end their five-game losing streak Thursday in Chicago, but gave up a goal in the third period and another in overtime to lose 3-2.

The Coyotes were blown out 5-0 by Colorado on Saturday, but got off to a rare fast start against Montreal.

Boyd scored early in the first period, gathering a pass from Schmaltz and beating Primeau from the left circle. Larrson scored midway through the first, beating Primeau to the glove side from the left circle on a feed from Phil Kessel.

The Coyotes set up Montreal for a prime scoring chance late in the period, when defenseman Victor Soderstrom coughed up the puck in his own end. That led to a quick 2-on-1 and Pitlick one-timed a pass from Jonathan Drouin past a sliding Vejmelka.

The goals kept coming in the second period.

Moser scored early in the second, skating around Josh Anderson - back after missing 11 games with a hand injury - and beating Primeau with a backhander.

Poehling gave Montreal its rare power-play goal, redirecting a shot by Drouin past Vejmelka to make it 3-2.

Arizona scored right after a power play late in the second period when Schmaltz gathered a pinballing puck and slipped it under Primeau's glove. The goal was upheld after Montreal challenged for goalie interference.
