COYOTES (9-12-3) at OILERS (6-14-4)

TV: FS-A, SNW

Season series: The Arizona Coyotes have won the first two games against the Edmonton Oilers, a 7-4 victory Oct. 15 and a 2-1 win Nov. 16. Coyotes forward Mikkel Boedker has four goals and five points, including a hat trick in the first game. Oilers forward Taylor Hall has three goals and four points.

Coyotes team scope: Arizona was shut out by the Calgary Flames 3-0 on Saturday, the fourth time they've been blanked this season, and their third loss in a row. "We had to play fast and we had to play with poise and make good plays with the puck, and we didn't do a lot of either," coach Dave Tippett said Saturday, according to the Coyotes' Twitter account. After the loss, the Coyotes are 6-3-0 against Pacific Division opponents. Forward Brendan Shinnimin made his NHL debut against Calgary, skating on a line with Sam Gagner and Martin Erat. The 23-year-old played 13:11 and went 3-for-4 on faceoffs, but failed to record a shot on goal. "We're still trying to find that mix in our lineup that gives us the best chance, and he's earned an opportunity," Tippett said of Shinnimin. The Coyotes head to Calgary on Tuesday for a rematch with the Flames before playing the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

Oilers team scope: Edmonton will look to snap their nine-game losing streak (0-6-3) on Monday. The Oilers wrapped up a three-game road trip with back-to-back overtime losses to the Nashville Predators on Friday and St. Louis Blues on Saturday. They finished November 2-9-3. Goalie Ben Scrivens voiced his displeasure after the Oilers loss to St. Louis. "I think we're getting what we deserve right now," he told the Edmonton Sun. "I don't think we're playing good enough to win in the NHL." Forward Matt Hendricks did not skate Sunday morning because of a leg injury. "He's a big part of our team. He brings a lot as a physical guy," center Boyd Gordon said of Hendricks. There was no further update on Hendricks' status for Monday. Defenseman Martin Marincin was assigned to the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League, and forward Jesse Joensuu was placed on waivers Sunday.

{coyotes} Hudler, Ramo lead Flames in shutout win vs. Coyotes

Eloise: Little Miss Christmas / A Christmas Story / White Christmas

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Jiri Hudler had a goal and two assists and Karri Ramo earned his second consecutive shutout in the Calgary Flames' 3-0 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Saturday.

TJ Brodie and Johnny Gaudreau also scored goals for the Flames (15-8-2), who got 26 saves from Ramo and have won six of their past eight games.

Hudler has a goal in four straight games; he's scored five over that span to go with three assists. He has scored or assisted on each of the past six Calgary goals.

Ramo, who shut out the San Jose Sharks in a 2-0 victory Wednesday, has won four straight decisions and now has a scoreless streak of 129:34 dating back to a 5-4 win against the New Jersey Devils on Nov. 22. He is 3-0-0 against the Coyotes in his career, allowing three goals in the three games.

The Coyotes (9-12-3) have lost five straight at home (0-3-2) and have scored one goal or been shut out in four of the past six games overall, going 1-3-2 over that span. Arizona has gone more than 109 minutes without a goal.

Goalie Devan Dubnyk made 26 saves for the Coyotes, but lost for the first time in regulation (5-1-1).

Arizona coach Dave Tippett stressed more puck possession during a four-day break in the schedule this week. But there was very little of it for the Coyotes early in the game.

Calgary dominated the first period, outshooting the Coyotes 13-3 and earning a four-minute power play 59 seconds into play when Mikkel Boedker clipped center Josh Jooris in the face with a high stick.

But Dubnyk stopped all four shots on the power play and then stoned Gaudreau on a breakaway, closing the pads to stop the rookie forward's backhand bid. Gaudreau and defenseman Kris Russell each had as many shots as the Coyotes in the period.

The second period was more of the same early, and Calgary finally cashed in. Coyotes defenseman Michael Stone tried to pinch along the boards but missed the puck, and the Flames took off on a 2-on-1. Hudler set up Brodie for a one-timer from the right circle, and the 24-year-old defenseman scored his sixth goal over Dubynk's shoulder at 4:34.

Brodie has two goals and five points in the past three games.

The Coyotes finally mustered some offense in the latter half of the second period, outshooting the Flames 13-3 after Brodie's goal. But Ramo was strong, makings stops on Keith Yandle and Martin Erat with the glove and on Tobias Rieder and Brandon McMillan in close to keep Calgary in front.

Neither team had a shot in the first four minutes of the third period, but the Flames made the most of their first. The Coyotes lost the puck on a rush in deep, and Gaudreau beat them down the ice before putting a wrist shot over Dubnyk's blocker for his fouth goal.

Hudler made it 3-0 on the power play when a blocked centering attempt dropped in the slot and he swept a backhander past Dubnyk at 7:13.

{coyotes} Coyotes look to reverse fortunes at home vs. Flames

Eloise: Little Miss Christmas / A Christmas Story

GLENDALE, Ariz. – If the Arizona Coyotes are going to join the Western Conference playoff chase, they have to stop leaving points behind on home ice.

The Coyotes will look to snap a four-game losing streak (0-2-2) at Gila River Arena against the Calgary Flames on Saturday. But it's the way they have been losing these tight, one-goal games that have hurt:

* Nov. 8 against the New York Islanders: Frans Nielsen of New York broke up a scoreless game with 2:31 left to play for a 1-0 win.

* Nov. 11 against the Dallas Stars: With a chance to win the game with a late power play, the Coyotes allowed Ryan Garbutt to go end-to-end on a game-winning shorthanded goal with 1:16 left for a 4-3 win.

* Nov. 18 against the Washington Capitals: The Coyotes held Washington to one goal in regulation, but Eric Fehr's overtime winner stole the extra point with a 2-1 victory.

* Nov. 25 against the Colorado Avalanche: The Coyotes blew a 3-0 first period lead, and the game-tying and game-winning goal for Colorado each came off Arizona deflections for a 4-3 win in overtime.

That's eight points up for grabs in the final minutes or overtime, and six have slipped through Arizona's fingers. Coach Dave Tippett feels a big reason is the lack of offensive pressure or zone time the Coyotes have generated, leaving them defending far too much during tight games.

"If you spend too much time in your own zone, eventually bad things are going to happen," Tippett said. "We need to spend more time in the offensive zone. To do that we have to control pucks better, we have to have the patience to hold on to pucks longer and the skill to make good plays."

Coyotes goalie Mike Smith took all four losses, dropping his record to 4-11-2. Tippett will turn to backup Devan Dubnyk, who is an impressive 5-0-1 with a 2.34 goals-against average this season, against the Flames

"[Smith] is as frustrated as anyone right now," Tippett said. "He's not winning, and it seems like there is a fluky goal here and a fluky goal there that he just can't get on top of it. He's fighting to get the job done and it's tough when bad breaks go against you."

The Coyotes will give yet another young player a chance to make an impact. Forward Brendan Shinnimin was called up from the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League and will make his NHL debut Saturday on a line with veterans Sam Gagner and Martin Erat. The undrafted free agent has a team-leading 10 assists with the Pirates to go with four goals and the Coyotes are looking for all the offense they can find.

"He's played very well in Portland. He brings a lot of energy and he's a very quick and determined player," Tippett said. "We're still trying to find that mix in our lineup that gives us the best chance and he's earned an opportunity to have a look."

Goalie Karri Ramo, who is 5-2-1 with 2.56 GAA will start for the Flames. Ramo is looking for his fourth straight win and has won each of his previous starts against Arizona, allowing three goals in the two games.

The Coyotes have been tough for Calgary to defeat at Gila River Arena. Arizona is 9-1-0 against the Flames since Tippett took over as coach and the Coyotes have won four straight.

{coyotes} Could 3-on-3 in overtime be headed for NHL?

SwissOutpost, The Swiss Army Supersite

The Original Christmas Classics / Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special

For decades, the American Hockey League has significantly aided the NHL by preparing its prospects to play in the show.

But the AHL is helping in another way this season by implementing a rule change that might, in the future, dramatically alter how the NHL decides games tied after regulation. NHL personnel are intrigued by the AHL's positive results using three-on-three competition in overtime.

"As a hockey guy, you do like to see the game end by a goal versus a shootout," Nashville Predators general manager David Poile. "There's no question the fans love the shootout, and that's not going away. But possibly you could see the three-on-three as a little bit of a compromise."

NHL rules call for five minutes of four-on-four play and then a shootout if no winner is determined. The new AHL rule calls for three minutes of four-on-four play and a shift to three-on-three at the first whistle after three minutes. The AHL goes to a shootout if there is no winner after seven minutes.

"The three-on-three we have played has been amazing — it was truly entertaining," said Grand Rapids (Mich.) Griffins winger Jeff Hoggan, an AHL veteran who has played 107 NHL games.

The rule change has had an extraordinary statistical impact: Coming into this week's action, 77.8% of overtime games were settled before the shootout. The final figure in 2013-14, when the AHL played four-on-four throughout OT, was 35.3%.

When AHL President David Andrews saw the three-on-three for the first time in his league, he thought it was "spectacularly entertaining."

"The three-on-three portion had everyone on the edge of their seats and I'm hearing that all over," Andrews told USA TODAY Sports.

The AHL has had 22 overtime games decided in four-on-four and 20 in three-on-three. What's interesting is the 20 goals have come in only 56 minutes of three-on-three competition.

"The first a little bit of three-on-three tends to be cautious and then if there is a scoring chance, it generally creates an odd-man rush the other way," Andrews said.

Griffins coach Jeff Blashill said the three-on-three play he has witnessed has been non-stop hockey — a scoring chance at one end, followed by a scoring chance at the other end.

"I had people tell me in that they hadn't seen the rink with that excitement level since the Calder Cup Finals two years ago," Blashill said. "If it is a shot and it is not in the net, it is probably going the other way."

Three-on-three hockey doesn't lend itself to conservative play. It's not as if coaches can slow down the game if they are in a talent disadvantage.

"Three-on-three is so much about individual ability," Blashill said. "I think the coaches have to let the horses run."

In the NHL this season, about 58% of games tied in regulation have ended in a shootout. Through the first two months last season, that figure was close to 63%.

One offseason change was to have teams switch ends in overtime to create a longer skate to the bench for line changes in hopes that teams would get caught more often on bad changes. Players have noticed a difference.

"It does create a little more offensive opportunity and a little more defensive discomfort on your changes," Predators forward Matt Cullen said.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has championed the cause of three-on-three overtime hockey, and even he said he wants to watch it longer in the AHL.

"It's a small body of work," he said. "I think we need a bigger body of work."

No one is suggesting the NHL eliminate the shootout, just make it rarer.

One theory is the shootout would become more exciting if it happened only once every five OT games.

"It would be kind of back to the days when you had a penalty shot and it was so special," Hoggan said.

One discussion about the AHL rule is whether it would be better if the referee blew the whistle when the puck entered the neutral zone after the three-minute mark. There aren't many stoppages in overtime and fans seem to want three-on-three to start as soon as possible.

While the NHL hasn't fully committed to three-on-three OT, there is an increased appetite for adopting some form of it, even if it is not exactly like the AHL format.

The plan is to discuss it more when the general managers meet in March in Florida.

"We should wait and see exactly how it goes in the American League and also what the end result is because it could change," said New Jersey Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello. "It's very early in the season.

"I wouldn't be surprised if someday we see it. We won't see it this year, but we have a sampling going on in the American League and we should use it."
