Season series: The San Jose Sharks won three of four against the Arizona Coyotes last season. Joe Pavelski led San Jose with three goals and goaltender Antti Niemi was 3-0-1. This is the first of five games the Pacific Division rivals will play this season.

Coyotes team scope: Mike Smith has started 15 games this season to five for Devan Dubnyk, but each goalie has four wins. Smith's frustrating season continued Thursday against the Dallas Stars; he entered the third period with a shutout and a 1-0 lead only to give up two goals in the first 52 seconds en route to a 3-1 loss. Dubnyk won games last weekend against the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers before Smith played in losses to the Washington Capitals and Stars. Defenseman David Schlemko assisted on Lauri Korpikoski's goal against the Stars in his first game back. Schlemko had been waived and assigned to the American Hockey League, but returned with Brandon Gormley sustained an undisclosed injury.

Sharks team scope: San Jose will have a new face on defense. Brenden Dillon was acquired from the Dallas Stars on Friday in a trade for Jason Demers and a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. Dillon had nine goals, 26 points and 174 penalty minutes in 149 games with the Stars. He had one assist and 23 penalty minutes in 20 games this season. The Sharks will be looking to break out of a funk that has seen them lose two in a row and five of their past seven. Forward Mike Brown practiced Friday, according to CSNBayArea.com. Brown, who hasn't played since the second game of the season, is working his way back from a hand injury. Forward Raffi Torres, who has missed the entire season, was in the building Friday and had a locker stall. Torres is rehabbing from knee surgery over the summer after the same knee caused him to miss all but five games last season.
