STARS (4-6-4) at COYOTES (6-7-1)

TV: FS-SW+, FS-A

Season series: The Dallas Stars were 2-1-0 against the Phoenix Coyotes last season beginning with a 3-1 win on Feb. 4. Four nights later, the Stars entered the Olympic break with a 2-1 win that moved them into the second Western Conference wild-card spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Coyotes won the season finale 2-1 to break a seven-game losing streak and finish two points behind the Stars for the final playoff spot.

Stars team scope: The Stars open a four-game week against the Arizona Coyotes losers of seven straight games (0-5-2). "I've never seen anything like this," coach Lindy Ruff told the Stars website after a 5-3 loss Saturday to the San Jose Sharks. Called up from Texas of the American Hockey League on Sunday, defenseman John Klingberg skated on the second pair with Jordie Benn at practice Monday and could make his NHL debut against Arizona. Stars forward Cody Eakin (upper body) missed practice but skated on his own and is questionable for Tuesday. Defenseman Alex Goligoski has been playing through an undisclosed injury and took a maintenance day Monday, but will play. Tyler Seguin scored all three Stars goals Saturday for his second hat trick this season. He has six in his career and five with the Stars, one shy of Mike Modano's franchise record.

Coyotes team scope: The Coyotes' 1-0 loss Saturday to the New York Islanders ended a three-game winning streak. Goaltender Mike Smith made 31 saves and after a slow start has allowed 19 goals on 249 shots (.924 save percentage) in his past eight games. "The goaltender is playing better," coach Dave Tippett told the Coyotes website. "That's a big part of it. Early on we were giving up a lot of goals and we ended up chasing games. The goalie is playing better and the team is playing better." Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who absorbed a cross check to the back at the end of the second period Saturday, took a maintenance day and will play Tuesday. Forward David Moss (upper body) skated Monday wearing a non-contact jersey and remains week-to-week. Defenseman Keith Yandle will play in his 400th consecutive game. Tippett will coach his 391st game to pass Bob Francis for the longest-tenured coach in franchise history.
