{coyotes} AP source: Coyotes to hire Tourigny has head coach

 

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes are hiring veteran NHL assistant and junior coach Andre Tourigny as head coach, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the official announcement won't come until a Thursday morning news conference.

Tourigny replaces Rick Tocchet, who was fired May 9 after the Coyotes failed to reach the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons.

The 47-year-old Tourigny has spent the past four seasons as coach and vice president of hockey operations for the Ottawa 67s in the junior Ontario Hockey League. He previously served as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators.

Earlier this month, Tourigny was an assistant coach to Gerrard Gallant on the Team Canada team that earned gold at the world championships. He also led Team Canada to gold at the 2020 world junior championships and was slated to coach at the world juniors again later this year, but will now need to be replaced.

Tourigny earned his second straight OHL coach of the year honors in 2020 after leading the 67s to the league's best record in consecutive seasons. He began his coaching career in 1998 at the junior major level, and became a head coach in 2003-04 with Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Tourigny takes over a team that could be headed toward more major changes. The Coyotes made the postseason for the first time since 2012 in last season's pandemic "bubble", but fell off last season.

Arizona held the fourth playoff spot heading into the final month of the 2020-21 season before losing 12 of 15 games to fall out of contention. The Coyotes have numerous unrestricted free agents, including goalie and Antti Raanta and defensemen Niklas Hjalmarsson, and third-leading scorer Conor Garland is a restricted free agent.

{coyotes} Talks intensifying between Coyotes, Tourigny

 

Talks are intensifying between the Arizona Coyotes and Hockey Canada head coach Andre Tourigny, tweets TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

He adds that Tourigny is a serious candidate to land the Arizona head coaching job, though nothing is done yet.

The Coyotes parted ways with Rick Tocchet after four seasons at the conclusion of their 2020-21 campaign. Tocchet led the Coyotes to a 24-26-6 record and a fifth-place finish in the NHL's West Division. It was a step back from their 2019-20 season that saw them make the playoffs for the first time since 2012 with a 33-29-8 regular season record.

Tourigny took over as head coach of Canada's Junior Team in 2020, earning a silver medal at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. In March, he signed a one-year contract with Hockey Canada with plans to join coaching staffs at four upcoming international tournaments.

He served as an assistant coach on Gerard Gallant's IIHF men's World Hockey Championship team that took home gold in Riga, Latvia earlier this summer.

{coyotes} Expansion, NHL Draft television information announced

 

NEW YORK - The National Hockey League today announced broadcast coverage plans for the 2021 NHL Draft™ and 2021 NHL Expansion Draft™. Both events will be produced by NHL Original Productions, in partnership with ESPN, NHL Network and Sportsnet.

The 2021 NHL Expansion Draft will be broadcast on Wednesday, July 21, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 in the U.S. and Sportsnet and SN NOW in Canada - live from Seattle, home of the Seattle Kraken, the League's 32nd team. Hosted by ESPN's Chris Fowler, the Kraken will reveal the initial roster for their 2021-22 inaugural season. Fowler will be joined by former NHL player Dominic Moore. Kevin Weekes, who has provided commentary and analysis for NHL Network and Hockey Night in Canada, will be reporting from various iconic Seattle locations.

The first round of the 2021 NHL Draft will be broadcast on Friday, July 23, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 in the U.S. and Sportsnet and SN NOW in Canada, live from the NHL Network studios in Secaucus, N.J.

ESPN's John Buccigross will host live coverage of Round 1, alongside Sportsnet analysts Elliotte Friedman and Sam Cosentino. Weekes, NHL Network's Jackie Redmond, and ESPN hockey writer and reporter Emily Kaplan will join the coverage team, providing insight and analysis.

NHL Network™ will provide exclusive coverage of Rounds 2-7 in the U.S. on Saturday, July 24, at 11 a.m. ET, live from its studios in Secaucus. NHL Network's signature programs NHL Now™ and NHL Tonight™ also will air live pre- and post-coverage of the Expansion Draft and the first round of the NHL Draft. Fans in Canada will be able to watch Rounds 2-7 on Sportsnet and SN NOW.

Some of the top prospects from North America include: University of Michigan's Owen Power, who tallied 16 points in 26 games as a freshman defenseman, and center Kent Johnson who scored 27 points in 26 games in his freshman season; center Mason McTavish of the Ontario Hockey League's Peterborough Petes; defenseman Luke Hughes, the brother of recent high draft picks Quinn and Jack; and Edmonton Oil Kings winger Dylan Guenther, who scored 24 points in a shortened 12-game season.

William Eklund, a left wing for Djurgarden of the Swedish Hockey League, tops all international skaters, while Sebastian Cossa of Edmonton in the WHL and Jesper Wallstedt of Lulea in the Swedish Hockey League rank first among goaltenders on the North America and International lists, respectively. {coyotes} Coyotes working on trading defenceman Ekman-Larsson again

 

It appears the Arizona Coyotes will make another attempt to move defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson this upcoming off-season.

The Coyotes were unable to find a trade involving their captain before his self-imposed trade deadline on Oct. 9, 2020. Ekman-Larsson has a no-move clause giving him significant say in his potential destination. It was reported back on Oct. 5, 2020 that the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks were on his list of teams that he would play for.

It appears the approach this time around will be handled differently by Arizona and Ekman-Larsson, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported during the Headlines segment on Saturday's Hockey Night in Canada.

"The two sides are going to try again, but this time around they're going to approach it differently," Friedman explained. "What Ekman-Larsson has told the Coyotes and what the Coyotes have agreed to do is they're going to go out there, check the market and they're going to bring a deal to him and then he can decide if he's comfortable with that team."

The 29-year-old signed an eight-year, $66-million extension with Arizona on July 1, 2018 — his first point of eligibility to do so. He's got six more years on that deal, carrying a cap hit of $8.25 million.

Ekman-Larsson recorded 24 points in 46 games this past season. He joins an intriguing off-season market for defencemen with Seth Jones and Dougie Hamilton as potential trade options.

{coyotes} UK Hockey: British player gets entry-level deal with Coyotes

 

LONDON (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes and British forward Liam Kirk have agreed to terms on an entry-level contract three years after he became the first player born and trained in England to be drafted, his agent and Ice Hockey UK said Friday.

The 21-year-old Kirk was the joint top goalscorer at the recent world championship in Latvia, where he had seven goals in as many games for Britain.

"It has always been my dream to play in the NHL so to get this deal with the Coyotes is fantastic," Kirk said in governing body Ice Hockey UK's announcement. "I am a step closer to that dream and I will continue to push myself to reach the elite level."

Kirk's agent, Dan Milstein, tweeted that Kirk agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level deal. The Coyotes have yet to announce it.

The Coyotes selected the 6-foot left winger in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL draft, taking him with the 189th overall pick.

Kirk had 21 goals and 29 assists in 47 regular-season games for the Peterborough Petes in 2019-20. The OHL canceled the 2020-21 season because of the coronavirus pandemic. Kirk played briefly in Sweden and England this past season to prepare for the worlds.

Kirk, who attended the Coyotes' rookie and training camps in 2019, began his career with the Sheffield Steelers of Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League.
