{coyotes} What you need to know about the NHLPA alternative proposal

Allurez Birthstone Jewelry

NHLPA.com

On Tuesday, the NHLPA submitted an alternative proposal to the owners that it believes is fair to both the players and the owners, and also to the fans, particularly in hockey markets that are having difficulties. We believe it will allow the game to grow and will take us beyond the labour issues that have plagued hockey for the last 20 years.

Key aspects of the proposal that were made public include:

  • Players compensation would grow at fixed rates which would result in player compensation being reduced by potentially more than $800 million over the next three seasons (depending on revenue growth)
  • A significantly expanded and simplified revenue sharing system specifically designed to help clubs in need of assistance
  • Increased flexibility for teams; will help GMs to put their teams together including awarding extra draft picks for teams in difficulty, allowing teams to trade dollars and players and in limited cases, allow for small amount of teams to go over or under the salary cap

Under the NHLPA proposal, at the end of three years, the players would have an option for a fourth which would 'snap-back' to the current agreement.

In essence, the players are proposing to partner with the financially stronger NHL owners to bring stability to the industry and assist those clubs that are less financially stable. In summary, the alternative proposal seeks to fix the problems that exist, instead of focusing on problems that don't.

{coyotes} NHL AND NHLPA WRAP UP FRIDAY'S MEETING IN NEW YORK

Shop Now

The NHL Players' Association and the National Hockey League have wrapped up their collective bargaining meeting for the day after NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr and the union presented a counter-proposal to the NHL.

Fehr had hoped to table a counter-proposal Thursday but instead called off the session to devote more time to drafting it.

The union received detailed team-by-team financial information from the 2011-12 season this week and spent Thursday combing through it.

It also had a new NHL proposal to work off of while coming up with a counter offer. On Tuesday, the league tabled a six-year contract that would see the players' share in revenue reduced to 46 per cent -- something that didn't hold much appeal for the union.

However, the league viewed its second offer as a significant improvement on the initial proposal it tabled July 13, which called for players to receive a 43 per cent share and introduced a number of new contract restrictions.

With a Sept. 15 deadline looming for a lockout, deputy commissioner Bill Daly expressed hope Thursday the players would be motivated to sweeten the offer they made two weeks ago.

"We're hopeful it's a meaningful proposal that we can continue to make progress from," he said. "We feel like we made a good step in that direction earlier this week and we hope that they would make a step forward as well."

Fehr was not made available to the media Thursday, but Detroit Red Wings player Danny Cleary told Mlive.com "It (the NHL proposal) was a pig with lipstick on, instead of a pig."

Ron Hainsey and Henrik Zetterberg joined Donald and Steve Fehr on the NHLPA side for Friday's meeting.

{coyotes} Accused hockey trio attend counseling, not camp

The three forwards for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds who were charged with sexual assault aren't at their Ontario Hockey League club's training camp.

Flyers 2011 third-round draft pick Nick Cousins, Phoenix Coyotes draft pick and Sicklerville, N.J., native Mark Petaccio instead are attending a "confidential behavioral wellness program."

All three men were charged with sexual assault after an incident Friday night at one of the players' houses. A woman, who claims to know all three players, filed a report Saturday morning and each player turned himself in later that day to Sault Ste. Marie authorities.

In a statement on the Greyhounds' website, general manager Kyle Dubas clarified that the three players aren't suspended. Each of the teens will attend the program with his own consent in order to "help each young man prepare, mentally and emotionally, to deal with living their lives and dealing with the issues and resultant stress, in a stable manner, as this court case works it's way through the legal process."

All three players are due in court on Oct. 1. Cousins and Fritsch were released by the Sault Ste. Marie police on Sunday. Petaccio, a U.S. citizen, was released Monday. No information was made available as to the conditions for the players' releases, such as travel restrictions.

Cousins was scheduled to attend the Flyers training camp in September, if it's not delayed by a lockout.

"Once the players complete the behavioral wellness program, we will reassess the situation with the intention being that the players will rejoin our hockey club," Dubas said in the release. "As this program is confidential we will not comment on timelines, nor will we comment on the program directly. We ask that everyone respects the privacy of each of the three young men as they go through it."

{coyotes} COYOTES DEAL WITH GLENDALE IN FLUX

Allurez Fine Jewelry

The Arizona Republic reports Coyotes suitor Greg Jamison says he's ready to move forward with his bid for the team, but now Glendale says it wants to rework its 20-year, $324 million deal with him.

The city was expected to send Jamison an updated draft on Wednesday night.

"We have the funds together," he said. "We're ready to go forward, and I'm ready to sign the deal that was negotiated earlier in the summer."

But in a Monday closed-door session, the Glendale City Council directed administrators not to sign the deal with Jamison until he buys the team and amendments can be made to some terms of the deal.

If the sales-tax initiative makes it to the ballot and is repealed by voters, the budget-strapped city could lose a $20 million funding stream.

Glendale spokeswoman Julie Frisoni said the city has made it clear that it won't sign the deal with Jamison until he purchases the team.

"Since June, the city and the NHL have been saying the next step is for Mr. Jamison to purchase the team, at which time the city was ready to sign the agreement,"she said. "At this time, in light of other issues, the council has asked us to go back and look at options that are feasible in terms of the management agreement."

Jamison acknowledged the difficulties the city has faced.

"There were a lot of political things that came as a part of this that had to be overcome. It took a long time to put a deal together, but now we're at the point where I'm prepared to go forward and sign the deal with the city," Jamison said. "That's the next thing that needs to be settled and then we can move forward."

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said Wednesday that the league continues to work with Jamison.

"(We) believe he is committed and is capable of closing the deal on his intended purchase of the Coyotes, provided that he can count on all the elements of the deal he has negotiated with the city, and which has been duly approved by council."

{coyotes} NHL, NHLPA TO RESUME NEGOTIATIONS ON FRIDAY

Allurez Fine Jewelry

NEW YORK -- The NHL's collective bargaining talks won't resume until Friday.

Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players' Association, had originally said he was "optimistic" the union would table a counter-proposal Thursday.

It's unclear if the union will present that offer when talks restart.

Earlier this week, the NHL tabled an offer that would see the players' share of revenue reduced from 57 per cent to 46 per cent.

The offer didn't hold much appeal for the NHLPA.

The current agreement expires Sept. 15, when the league has said it will lock out the players.
