{coyotes} Report: Avalanche acquiring goaltender Darcy Kuemper from Coyotes

The Colorado Avalanche are acquiring goaltender Darcy Kuemper from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a first-round pick and defenceman Conor Timmins, according to Craig Morgan of NHL Network.

According to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston, the Coyotes are retaining $1 million of the netminder's $4.5-million cap hit.

{coyotes} Coyotes sign Dzingel to one-year, $1.1 million contract

The Arizona Coyotes have signed former Ottawa Senators forward Ryan Dzingel to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.

Dzingel tallied 13 points in 40 games with the Senators and Carolina Hurricanes during the 2020-2021 season, with eight goals and five assists.

After spending the first four years of his career in Ottawa, Dzingel ended up back in the capital city after being moved from Carolina halfway through the 2020-2021 season.

{coyotes} Maple Leafs sign Michael Bunting for two-years, $1.9M

After walking away from the Arizona Coyotes and fielding interest from multiple suitors, Michael Bunting has signed with his hometown Maple Leafs.

It's a two-year pact carrying a cap hit of $950,000.

Spending his entire career under the radar, the late-blooming Bunting was drafted 160th overall in the 2013 OHL draft by then -- Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds GM Kyle Dubas.

Under then-Soo coach Sheldon Keefe, Bunting flourished offensively, racking up 116 points over his 105 OHL games played.

The connections are obvious, and the price should be right.

"It all comes down to value," Dubas said last week of his free agency strategy.

Barring a trade off the roster (Alexander Kerfoot's name has surfaced in rumours), the top-heavy Maple Leafs have roughly $4.6 million in their account to complete their 2021-22 lineup.

So, the club is waving adieu to UFAs Zach Hyman (seven years at $5.5 million in Edmonton), Alex Galchenyuk (exploring an eighth NHL franchise), Zach Bogosian (rejoining Tampa Bay for cheap), and possibly Nick Foligno (another Wild target).

Well, what about Bunting?

The 25-year-old left wing was a fourth-round choice by the Coyotes in 2014. He has spent at least part of the past six seasons in the AHL and has never put pen to paper on a one-way contract at the NHL level.

At five-foot-11 and 197 pounds, he's a blue-collar-style player with legitimate blue-collar roots.

His mom, Lynda, was a bookkeeper at a local store. His dad, Andy, collected garbage for the city.

Despite growing up in the mecca, Bunting played high-school hockey for most of his formative years because AAA in the GTHL is so cost-prohibitive.

"I still remember the day," Bunting told NHL.com of his tryout with the AAA Don Mills Flyers. "They showed me how much it would cost. I said, OK, I'll talk to you guys later. I don't think I'm going to play.' "

The Flyers worked out a payment plan, Bunting's stock rose with his game, and he remains indebted.

Never forget where you came from.

Bunting fell into that rare Group VI group of free agents composed players who have played at least three pro seasons but fewer than 80 NHL games prior to turning 25.

Honing his skills in AHL Tuscon, Bunting quietly broke out in 2021, scoring 10 goals and registering nine takeaways (plus three assists) in 21 games while skating more than 15 minutes a night for a struggling Coyotes club.

He's been primarily used in offensive situations (68.9 percent of his shifts start in the O-zone) and could either stick in the Leafs' middle six or face a similar fate as, say, a Nic Petan -- an AHL/NHL tweener who went unqualified by Toronto Monday after multiple big-league opportunities.

Bunting's high shooting percentage (26.3) could be viewed as a red flag or an indication of his willingness to drive to the greasy areas.

"He just looked himself in the mirror last year and said, 'I've got to be more professional and I've got to get myself ready to play,'" former coach Rick Tocchet told Ken Campbell in May. "Came in in great shape, was sent down right away, no attitude. He was the best player in Tucson and [Roadrunners coach] Steve Potvin couldn't say enough about him.

"A guy willing to go to the net. If you look at his goals, they're all near the front of the net."

A new NHL contract marks a wonderful summer for Bunting, who won a world championship gold medal with Team Canada in June.

{coyotes} Sharks sign Pederson to two-year, two-way deal

The San Jose Sharks have signed their recent acquisition Lane Pederson to a two-year, two-way deal.

The Sharks acquired forward Lane Pederson from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round draft pick.

The contract is a two-way deal in year one worth $750,000 at the NHL level and $300,000 at the AHL level, followed by a one-way contract in year two worth $750,000.

Pederson had one goal and two assists for three points in 15 games with the Coyotes last season.

{coyotes} Report: Coyotes to sign Jaskin out of KHL to one-year, $3.2M deal

Dmitrij Jaskin appears to be returning to the NHL.

The Arizona Coyotes will be signing the 28-year-old forward, who has spent the last two seasons with the KHL's Moscow Dynamo, to a one-year $3.2-million deal, according to Bally Sports' Andy Strickland. NHL free agency opens Wednesday.

Jaskin finished top-five in KHL scoring in 2020-21 (fourth) and 2019-20 (second) after last suiting up in the NHL with the Washington Capitals in 2018-19.

Jaskin previously spent six seasons with the St. Louis Blues, putting a career-best 18 points across 54 games in 2014-15.

{coyotes} Coyotes acquire Stralman, Kolyachonok from Panthers

The Arizona Coyotes have acquired defencemen Anton Stralman, Vladislav Kolyachonok and a second-round pick in 2024 from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a seventh-rounder in 2023, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The deal was orchestrated to free up cap space for the Panthers, which could be used to sign defenceman Ryan Suter, per George Richards of Florida Hockey Now.

Stralman, 34, registered three goals and six assists in 38 games with the Panthers this past season.

Kolyachonok, 20, was selected in the second round (52nd overall) in 2019 by the Panthers. He has yet to play an NHL game.

{coyotes} Former Blackhawks, Coyotes defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson retires

Drafted to the Hawks in 2005, Hjalmarsson made his NHL debut is 2006, and was an integral part of the team's defense and overall core for 10 years before he was dealt to Arizona after the 2016-17 season in exchange for Connor Murphy and Laurent Dauphin.

{coyotes} Coyotes pick Shane Doan’s son Josh in 2nd round of NHL draft

Shane Doan recused himself from any scouting meetings when his son Josh was brought up.

One of the faces of the Arizona Coyotes for two decades, Doan is part of their front office now, and only Friday night saw the draft list whittling down to the point he knew it was possible Josh would be their pick. It happened early in the second round Saturday when the Coyotes took Josh Doan with the 37th pick, bringing in a prospect homegrown in the Valley.

"Today was a day he's worked a long time and hard for," said Shane Doan, who's now Arizona's chief hockey development officer. "It's surreal that it happened to be the Coyotes. He deserves every single bit of everything he's getting today and so proud of him."

Shane Doan played 20 seasons in Arizona before retiring in 2017. His No. 19 hangs in the rafters as one of the few numbers retired by the Coyotes, who were used to having his children around.

"Just kind of being around the rink my whole life as a kid, it just makes it that much sweeter and cooler," Josh said.

Josh Doan put up 31 goals and 39 assists for 70 points in 53 games with the Chicago Steel of the USHL last season. The Scottsdale native was ranked 87th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

MAILLOUX APOLOGIZES

The morning after the Montreal Canadiens selected him late in the first round, Logan Mailloux apologized for sharing an explicit photo of a woman performing a sex act without her consent, a crime he was convicted for while playing in Sweden.

"I am really sorry," he said on a video call with reporters. "It's the dumbest thing I've ever done, and I know that it impacted her life. And I just hope that she knows how remorseful I feel, and I do feel sorry about it."

Mailloux had asked in a statement shared on social media for teams not to draft him. But there is no way for a player to remove himself from the draft, and Montreal picked him with the No. 31 selection Friday night.

"I know I had said that I did not want to be drafted this year. But as a young man who wants to become a better person, I feel that being accompanied by the Montreal Canadiens organization will help me greatly. They have committed to helping me grow as a person, and I thank them for this. I've already started my personal journey, as I'm participating in professional counseling. I thank them for believing in me and giving me a second chance. I promise to not let anybody down. I want to use my personal story to be a part of the solution moving forward."

ISLES STEAL?

Lou Lamoriello might be 78, but the New York Islanders general manager still knows how to make waves in the hockey world.

Lamoriello and the Islanders might have gotten the steal of the draft by taking 6-foot-2 Finnish center Aatu Raty with the No. 52 pick. Raty was ranked third among skaters playing in Europe and still slipped past the middle of the second round.

The Islanders could be active in the trade and free agent markets over the next few days after clearing salary cap space by trading Andrew Ladd to Arizona. New York also traded defenseman Nick Leddy to Detroit and lost Jordan Eberle to Seattle in the expansion draft.
