{coyotes} NHL All-Star Game rosters revealed

Ryan O'Reilly, Alex Pietrangelo and Jordan Binnington helped the St. Louis Blues win the Stanley Cup for the first time last season. The three will be in the spotlight again when the Blues host the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Game at Enterprise Center on Jan. 25 (8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, SN, TVAS).

O'Reilly, Pietrangelo and Binnington were named to the Central Division All-Star Team by the NHL Hockey Operations Department on Monday.

Tied with Brayden Schenn and Jaden Schwartz for second on St. Louis with 34 points (eight goals, 26 assists), O'Reilly will play in his third All-Star Game. When the 28-year-old center was named as the Blues' lone representative in the 2019 All-Star Game on Jan. 2 of last season, they were in last place in the League standings.

[RELATED: 2020 NHL All-Star Game coverage]

This season, the Blues (26-8-6) lead the Western Conference with 58 points and have won their past eight games.

Pietrangelo, who scored the winning goal in St. Louis' 4-1 victory against the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, will make his second All-Star Game appearance after playing in the 2018 game. The 29-year-old is tied with Shea Weber of the Montreal Canadiens for fifth among defensemen with 31 points (10 goal, 21 assists).

"It's special, especially to have that opportunity with [the game] being in St. Louis," Pietrangelo told the Blues website. "It's a pretty special deal to be able to do this at home, and it's going to be more fun sharing the opportunity with my family."

Binnington will play in his first All-Star Game. The 26-year-old goalie didn't make his first NHL start until Jan. 7 of last season. This season, he's tied with Frederik Andersen of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the League lead with 19 wins (19-6-4) and has 2.39 goals-against average, .921 save percentage and one shutout.

The Washington Capitals (27-8-5), who lead Metropolitan Division and the NHL with 59 points, had two players selected. John Carlson, who leads NHL defensemen with 50 points (13 goals, 37 assists) will make his second All-Star Game appearance and goalie Braden Holtby will make his fifth. Forward Alex Ovechkin was voted captain of the Metropolitan Division team but announced Saturday he will not attend All-Star Weekend to rest in preparation for the remainder of the season.

"Yeah. That's obviously no surprise to anyone," Holtby said of Carlson's selection. "It's good. It's fun to share it with him and spend some time with him. He's obviously having an unbelievable season. So, he's got some pressure on him now for the hardest shot again."

Other teams with two All-Star Game representatives are the Boston Bruins (forward David Pastrnak, goalie Tuukka Rask) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (Andersen, forward Auston Matthews) in the Atlantic Division, Calgary Flames (defenseman Mark Giordano, forward Matthew Tkachuk) and the Edmonton Oilers (forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl) in the Pacific Division, the Winnipeg Jets (forward Mark Scheifele, goalie Connor Hellebuyck) in the Central Division and the Columbus Blue Jackets (defenseman Seth Jones, goalie Joonas Korpisalo) in the Metropolitan Division.

It would be the first All-Star Game appearance for Korpisalo, but he is out "weeks," according to Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella, after he was injured during Columbus' 3-2 shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. Arizona Coyotes goalie Darcy Kuemper also was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time but is out week to week with a lower-body injury he sustained against the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 20.

Nine of the top 10 in the NHL in points were selected to play in this season's All-Star Game: McDavid (63), Draisaitl (61), Pastrnak (58), Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon (56), Florida Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau (53), Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel (52), New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin (51), Carlson (50) and Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane (47).

NHL Tonight: ASG Rosters

  • 06:45 • 3:36 PM

Kane will play in his ninth All-Star Game, the most in this season's game. Weber will make his seventh appearance.

Andersen, Binnington, Huberdeau, Korpisalo, Kuemper, and Philadelphia Flyers forward Travis Konecny are among 13 players selected to play in the All-Star Game for the first time.

"It's pretty fresh so it hasn't really settled in yet," Konecny said. "It's something that you don't really think about it until it kind of happens. When you make the NHL that's one of the first steps, you want to be successful and win the Stanley Cup with your team but you don't really think about the All-Star Game. Now that it's come up it's pretty amazing. Got a lot of people to thank for it."

MacKinnon (Central), Pastrnak (Atlantic), and McDavid (Pacific) were voted captains of their respective divisions by the fans.

An additional player from each division will be added to the All-Star rosters through the 2020 NHL All-Star Last Men In presented by adidas fan vote. Each of the 31 NHL teams are represented on the Last Men In ballot.

The coach of the team with the highest points percentage in each division at the halfway point of the regular season will coach their division's All-Star team.

Each division will have one more player added to its roster by the 2020 NHL All-Star Last Men In presented by adidas fan vote. The player with the most votes from each of the four divisions will be added to the All-Star Game rosters.

Voting for the Last Men In opens Wednesday, Jan. 1, at 12 p.m. ET and closes Friday, Jan. 10, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Fans can vote at NHL.com/Vote or on a mobile interactive ballot on the NHL app.

The 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend will again consist of a three-game tournament, played in a 3-on-3 format, featuring four teams, one for each NHL division.

The 2020 NHL All-Star Skills Competition will take place at Enterprise Center on Jan. 24 (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, SN, TVAS), one day before the game.

{coyotes} Stars score 4 in third, rally past Coyotes 4-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Some choice words in the dressing room after a rough first period helped turned the tide for the Dallas Stars in what was one of their most gratifying wins of the season.

The Stars cranked up their physical play in the second period and fed off that energy, then broke out with four goals in the third. Roope Hintz scored the go-ahead goal late in Dallas' four-goal period, and the Stars rallied for a 4-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday night.

Hintz's team-leading 13th goal of the season made it 3-2 with 4:09 left to play, and Mattias Janmark sealed the Stars' second straight win with an empty-netter with 1:36 remaining.

Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist, Alexander Radulov also scored, and Anton Khudobin stopped 33 shots for the Stars.

"It was a character win," Benn said. "We found a way to play 20 good minutes. We needed a kick in the butt and we found a way to come back and get two points."

Conor Garland had a goal and assist for Arizona, and Taylor Hall scored his first goal at home this season for his new team after being acquired from New Jersey on Dec 16.

The Coyotes have lost three straight in regulation for the first time this season.

"I like the effort," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. "It's three plays, the difference in the third period. It's playoff hockey, you've got to suck it up. You've got to take hits and get up. Get up and get to the net, who cares."

Hall stuffed in a bouncing puck that was knocked down by Garland after Hall delivered a hit on Dallas defenseman Jamie Oleksiak in the right corner to get the Coyotes on the scoreboard at 8:42 of the first.

Janmark left briefly after he took a hit from Hall and his left knee appeared to collide with Hall as Hall turned his hip. Janmark was helped off the ice and taken to the dressing room, where he sat out the final 3:52 of the period before returning in the second.

Garland made it 2-0 with a wrist shot high into the net from the side after Nick Schmaltz fed a loose puck to him with 1:58 to go in the openng period. Garland raised his team-leading goal total to 13 and Schmaltz got his 25th assist of the season, also a team high.

The Coyotes outshot the Stars 22-5 in the first period.

Derek Stepan. The play was reviewed and changed to a two-minute interference penalty, which drew boos from the crowd.' data-reactid="43">A scoreless second period saw more physical play, with Oleksiak originally given a five-minute penalty for a jarring shoulder-first hit on Arizona's Derek Stepan. The play was reviewed and changed to a two-minute interference penalty, which drew boos from the crowd.

Stepan left the game and didn't return with what was announced as an upper body injury.

The Stars got the better of the many hits delivered on both sides, led by Benn.

"Our whole group plays better when we're emotionally involved," Benn said. "As the game went on, we kept banging bodies out there and it paid off."

Raanta came up with a save of Oleksiak's breakaway shot as Oleksiak came out of the penalty box at 15:06 of the second. But Raanta - a night after giving up four goals on 16 shots and being pulled from the game at Vegas - couldn't keep the lead in the third and finished with 21 saves.

The biggest thing out of this game is that we responded and we played to our expectations," Stars coach Rick Bowness said.

NOTES: Coyotes F Vinnie Hinostroza missed his first game of the season, designated a healthy scratch. ... Arizona D Jordan Oesterle was also scratched, missing his first game since Nov. 7. ... The two teams met for the first time this season and will play twice more. … The Stars have won 10 of the last 11 meetings and 15 of 19 with Arizona. ... Benn has six assists in his last four games against the Coyotes.

{coyotes} Stone scores twice, Golden Knights beat Coyotes 4-1

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Mark Stone scored twice and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-1 Saturday night to take over sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division.

It was Stone's first two-goal game as a member of the Golden Knights and put Vegas alone atop the division for the first time since Oct. 4, when they opened the season by sweeping a home-and-home series against San Jose.

Chandler Stephenson and Paul Stastny also scored for the Golden Knights, who improved to 10-4-2 in their last 16 games. Marc-Andre Fleury, who came in having lost five of his last eight starts while allowing 21 goals in his previous five games, made 27 saves for his 454th career win to move into a tie with Curtis Joseph for sixth all-time.

Michael Grabner scored the lone goal for the Coyotes, who are 13-3-1 when scoring a power-play goal this season, but were 0 for 5 with a man advantage.

Antti Raanta made his 15th start of the season for Arizona, but was pulled at the 1:54 mark of the second period after giving up four goals on 16 shots. Adin Hill, recalled on Dec. 20, made 20 saves in his season debut.

Stone got things going on a power play midway through the first period, when he manhandled Arizona defenseman Jason Demers in front of the net to retrieve a feed from Alex Tuch, then flipped the puck past Raanta.

Grabner tied it with 6 1/2 minutes left in the period when Conor Garland did a nice job of drawing Fleury out of the net and to his right, with a pass to a streaking Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Grabner took a pass from Ekman-Larsson and tied the game with an easy one-timer into a wide open net.

Stone answered about 95 seconds later when he buried a pass from Max Pacioretty behind the net, putting Vegas back in front.

The Golden Knights, who were 2 for 3 on the power play, opened the second period with a man advantage and took advantage out of the opening faceoff when Stephenson took a stretch pass from Shea Theodore, skated in unbothered and lasered a wrist shot through Raanta's five-hole 12 seconds in.

Stastny ended Raanta's night when he gracefully dragged the puck through the slot with his backhand and slipped the puck into the corner of the net, putting Vegas ahead 4-1 at 1:54 of the middle period.

NOTES: The Golden Knights recalled F Keegan Kolesar from the Chicago of the AHL earlier in the day. Kolesar appeared in 18 games with the Wolves this season and had recorded six points - all assists. The Brandon, Manitoba-native was acquired by the Golden Knights from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a second-round selection (45th overall) during the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. ... Lawson Crouse played in his 200th career NHL game. ... Theodore matched a career-high three assists, which he also achieved on Dec. 15 against Vancouver.

{coyotes} Josi's goal, assist lead Predators over Coyotes 3-2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Roman Josi is on such a roll lately, even the shots he doesn't expect to go in do just that.

The defenseman had another goal and an assist, Pekka Rinne made 26 saves and the Nashville Predators beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Monday night.

Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson also scored for the Predators, who have won four of five.

"Out of the last 10 points, we've gotten nine of them," Rinne said. "That's really good. We needed that and obviously it feels better to go on the (Christmas) break after wins like this."

Lawson Crouse and Jakob Chychrun scored for Arizona. Alex Goligoski added two assists.

Josi put the Predators up 3-1 at 9:56 of the third period with a wrist shot from the left point through traffic.

"I just saw a lane and I just wanted to get it off quick," Josi said. "I was pretty surprised it went in, but I'll take it."

Chychrun drew the Coyotes within one 37 seconds later, but Arizona could not tie it.

Josi, who earlier Monday was selected the NHL's second star for last week, extended his career-best goal streak to five games. He became the first defenseman in Nashville history to score a goal in five consecutive games.

"He's always been an impactful player offensively and right now he's in a groove and that's good for us," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. "He's had such a strong start to his season. Every game, he's ... if not the most noticeable player, he's one of them. There's never a game where he doesn't show up and punch his ticket."

Rinne earned his 354th win, placing him 20th on the NHL's career list.

Forsberg opened the scoring at 18:08 of the first.

After goaltender Antti Raanta turned aside Nashville's first 21 shots in the period, Forsberg was finally able to put one in when Josi's shot hit traffic in front and the puck bounced to Forsberg on the left side. With his feet below the goal line, Forsberg quickly kicked the puck to his forehand and slipped a slick wrist shot between Raanta and the near post.

"The first period was tough. (Raanta) was unreal," Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. "They threw everything at us. We didn't go through people early and against Nashville, you've got to go through those guys because they're good through the neutral zone."

Forsberg and Josi are tied for the team lead with 14 goals.

The Predators outshot Arizona 22-5 in the first. Prior to Forsberg's goal, Raanta denied Rocco Grimaldi and then two backhand attempts by Matt Duchene in a five-second span.

Raanta finished with 38 saves.

Arvidsson made it 2-0 at 7:55 of the second when his long slap shot from the right side hit Raanta in the mask and then trickled across the goal line for his seventh of the season.

Playing in his second game since missing 12 after being cross-checked by St. Louis defenseman Robert Bortuzzo on Nov. 23, Arvidsson scored his first goal since Nov. 2.

Crouse halved the Nashville lead at 18:07 of the second.

After taking a pass from Nick Schmaltz on the right side, Crouse skated into the right circle and slipped a backhand by Rinne.

"(Schmaltz) just laid a beautiful saucer pass and I looked up and there was just me against the goalie," Crouse said. "I came in and threw a backhander over his shoulder."

NOTES: Predators C Colin Blackwell assisted on Josi's goal for his first NHL point. ... Predators LW Austin Watson was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. ... Schmaltz has assists in four consecutive games, totaling seven during that span. ... The Coyotes have not allowed a power-play goal in their last five games.

{coyotes} Dec. 23: Trottier gets six points in one period

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Dec. 23

1978: Bryan Trottier sets an NHL record with six points in the second period and finishes the game with five goals and three assists in the New York Islanders' 9-4 victory against the New York Rangers at Nassau Coliseum.

Trottier puts the Islanders ahead 1-0 with a first-period goal, scores three times and has three assists during the Islanders' seven-goal second period, and ends his night with a third-period power-play goal. A two-goal, five-point night by linemate Mike Bossy is almost an afterthought.

It's the last game before Christmas for the Islanders, who take a 16-game home unbeaten streak (12-0-4) into the break.

MORE MOMENTS

1933: Howie Morenz of the Montreal Canadiens scores his 249th NHL goal in a 3-0 win against the Detroit Red Wings at the Forum to become the League's all-time leader. Morenz surpasses Cy Denneny, the previous record holder with 248. Morenz finishes his NHL career with 271.

1967: Rookie goalie Wayne Rutledge makes 21 saves for his first NHL shutout and the first for the Los Angeles Kings, who defeat the St. Louis Blues 4-0. Bryan Campbell scores twice for the Kings, who play their final game at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. After a two-game trip, they return for the opening of the Forum in Inglewood, California.

1980: The Winnipeg Jets defeat the visiting Colorado Rockies 5-4 to end their 30-game winless streak (0-23 with seven ties). Willy Lindstrom's power-play goal with 1:50 remaining in the third period breaks a 4-4 tie. It's the Jets' first victory since defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 on Oct. 17. During the streak, they go through three coaches (Tommy McVie, Bill Sutherland and Mike Smith).

1988: Wayne Gretzky moves past Bobby Hull for fourth place on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list by scoring two empty-net goals for the Kings in a 5-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Pacific Coliseum. The two goals give Gretzky 611 in his NHL career, one more than Hull. He also has two assists.

1999: Paul Coffey of the Carolina Hurricanes has an assist in a 4-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators to become the first defenseman (and eighth player) in NHL history to reach 1,500 points. The milestone comes when he sets up Sami Kapanen's power-play goal late in the second period.

2006: Mike Sillinger becomes the first player in NHL history to reach double figures in goals with nine different teams when he scores his 10th of the season in the Islanders' 4-0 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nassau Coliseum.

2016: Arizona Coyotes forward Shane Doan reaches two milestones on the same night at Gila River Arena. Doan plays in his 1,500th NHL game, all with the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise, and scores his 400th goal when he beats Frederik Andersen of the Toronto Maple Leafs at 19:16 of the second period. However, the Coyotes lose 4-1. Leo Komarov scores two goals for Toronto.

2017: Brock Boeser becomes the fastest rookie in Vancouver Canucks history to score 20 goals when he beats Jake Allen of the St. louis Blues in a 3-1 loss at Rogers Arena. Boeser gets his 20th goal in his 34th game. The 20-year-old is the fifth player in the NHL and the first rookie to score 20 goals in the 2017-18 season.

2018: Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen each has a four-point night (two goals, two assists) for the Carolina Hurricanes in a 5-3 win against the Boston Bruins at PNC Arena. Each player scores one of his goals shorthanded. The Hurricanes, wearing the green uniforms of their predecessors, the Hartford Whalers (the franchise moved to North Carolina in 1997) rally after spotting the Bruins a two-goal lead.

{coyotes} Keller scores twice to lead Coyotes past Red Wings 5-2

DETROIT (AP) -- Clayton Keller was a force on both ends of the ice Sunday night, and that's what the Arizona Coyotes want to see from him.

The 21-year-old forward had two goals and an assist to lead Arizona to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

"He's really working on the defensive part of his game, which we asked him to do," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. "And when he plays good defense, the other parts of his game are really good."

Both of Keller's goals came off passes from linemate Nick Schmaltz.

"I think we play the game a lot like each other and we can feed off each other really well," Keller said.

Keller also set up center Carl Soderberg for a goal.

"Carl's huge in front of the net, creating space and making it a lot easier for us to work," Keller said.

Taylor Hall and Christian Dvorak also scored for Arizona. Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson had three assists.
