{coyotes} Roenick emotional over election into Hockey Hall of Fame

--

Jeremy Roenick was waiting at a Starbucks drive-thru when he got the call from the Hockey Hall of Fame that he never thought he'd receive.

"I couldn't give them my money, couldn't get my coffee. The guy was looking at me with tears in my eyes. It was kind of embarrassing but also one of the greatest moments ever," the 54-year-old said about being elected as part of the Class of 2024.

"I had just gotten out of the gym and saw a 416 number and I froze. This is crazy for me."

Selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the No. 8 pick in the 1988 NHL Draft, Roenick had 1,216 points (513 goals, 703 assists) in 1,363 career games with the Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks. He is fourth in points in NHL history among United States-born players, behind Mike Modano (1,374), Patrick Kane (1,284) and Phil Housley (1,232).

Roenick's best seasons came early in his career with the Blackhawks. He had 103 points (53 goals, 50 assists) in 1991-92, and an NHL career-high 107 points in both 1992-93 (50 goals, 57 assists) and 1993-94 (46 goals, 61 assists).

He announced his retirement from the League on Aug. 6, 2009.

"I probably should've been more humble in my career," Roenick said. "Obviously, had a lot of tough parts in my career but also a lot of great parts. This is the most I've ever felt humbled. The last four months of my life have been different for me, a change of path.

"I think I had to look at my life and how I was living it, with my work, with the things I was doing, battling mental issues and things I just wasn't very happy about. Sometimes you have to make a life change and make yourself accountable for a lot of things, which I did. I made a promise to myself that I'd be more grateful of friendships and family and things I have and not take things for granted and be more present than all over the world. Be everything for everybody. Sometimes you have to take a look in the mirror, and I did that. Life's been one good story after another since that happened. This is the cherry on top. Very grateful."

Roenick will be entering the Hall of Fame alongside former NHL forward Pavel Datsyuk and defenseman Shea Weber, and former United States women's national team forwards Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell-Pohl. Former general manager David Poile and current NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell were elected in the Builder category.

To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, candidates need to receive at least 75 percent of the vote from the selection committee. A maximum of four former male players, two former female players, two builders or one builder and one retired official may be inducted in a single year.

The induction ceremony will be held at the Hall of Fame in Toronto on Nov. 11.

Roenick admitted there was a time he thought he'd never get into the Hall. Now, the dream has come true.

"Of course it went through my mind, but you have to understand the process," he said.

"It's what Mike (Gartner, chair of the Hall of Fame selection committee) talked about earlier. When you wait for it, and I waited for it, never knowing it would happen, it means more because it hit me really, really hard. The tears came and I didn't expect to have that much of an emotional reaction, but I did."

{coyotes} Report: Meruelo walking away from Coyotes' ownership

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

It appears that Alex Meruelo is walking away from the ownership group of the Arizona Coyotes.

Sources tell Craig Morgan and PHNX Sports that a week after the team's plan to purchase land in Phoenix fell through, Meruelo and ownership addressed Coyotes staff on Monday and told them they have no plans to pursue further arena options.

A 110-acre tract of land in North Phoenix had been targeted by Meruelo in hopes of ending the Coyotes' long-running bid to find a permanent home. When the auction for the land appraised at $68.5 million was pushed back until this summer, Meruelo followed the advice of the NHL and opted to sell the franchise to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith in April.

The Smiths moved the franchise to Salt Lake City, renaming it the Utah Hockey Club. Meruelo retained the Coyotes' name, logo and trademark with plans to resurrect the team as an expansion franchise if a new arena is built within five years.

With that land auction now cancelled, the future of the team has been in doubt.

{coyotes} Coyotes' bid for new arena hits another snag with cancellation of land auction

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

PHOENIX (AP) — An auction for a tract of land where Arizona Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo had hoped to build a new arena has been canceled.

The Arizona State Land Department announced Friday it was canceling next Thursday's auction and reordering the steps so the applicant can file for a special use permit.

"We understand the delay in an auction is a disappointment for our applicant and members of the public, but the change in timing is the prudent decision for the Trust," ASLD said in a statement. "ASLD remains open to working with our applicant to bring the land forward to auction in the future if a special use permit is received."

The 110-acre tract of land in North Phoenix had been targeted by Meruelo in hopes of ending the Coyotes' long-running bid to find a permanent home.

Cancelation of the land auction now puts that in doubt.

"Today, after a year of planning and meeting every obligation required under Arizona law, the Arizona State Land Department unilaterally canceled the auction that was scheduled to occur on June 27th for the site that has been identified as the future home of the Arizona Coyotes," the Coyotes said in a statement. "This unprecedented action by the State of Arizona seriously jeopardizes the future of NHL hockey returning to the desert."

The Coyotes have been searching for a permanent home almost since the day the franchise moved from Winnipeg in 1996.

The team shared a downtown Phoenix arena with the NBA's Phoenix Suns before moving to Glendale in 2003. When the city of Glendale backed out of a long-term lease agreement, the Coyotes moved across town to play at Arizona State University's Mullett Arena in 2022.

The 5,000-seat arena, by far the smallest in the NHL, was supposed to be a temporary solution until the Coyotes could find a new home. The NHL was reluctant to have the team continue playing at Mullett for several more years while Meruelo tried to secure the north Phoenix land, leaving the sale to the Smiths as the only viable option.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league would need about 18 months to reactivate the franchise and was going to keep a close eye to make sure Meruelo and his group were hitting appropriate milestones in the process.

Chris Armstrong was named president of hockey operations of the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday, joining what officially became an NHL franchise June 13.

Armstrong, no relation to Utah general manager Bill Armstrong, will also be an alternate governor and work with business operations and Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) ownership.

"We are excited to welcome Chris to the SEG leadership team," Utah Hockey Club owner Ryan Smith said. "He has cultivated strong relationships with top players, agents and executives across the hockey world throughout his career, and his unique background and diverse skill set will be crucial as we establish the greatest possible hockey experience for our community, fans, players, coaches and front office."

Chris Armstrong arrives after nearly 14 years as an executive at Wasserman, a Los Angeles-based sports marketing and talent management company, where he was a key figure in advising an acquisition strategy that established the company's hockey practice in 2018. He also negotiated several contracts for prominent hockey executives within the NHL and managed the careers of top players and personalities in professional golf, including Utah native Tony Finau.

Utah on Monday signed its first two players to three-year, entry-level contracts since relocating from Arizona: 19-year-old forward Noel Nordh and 20-year-old forward Julian Lutz. It has the No. 6 pick in the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft at Sphere in Las Vegas. The first round is June 28 (7 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, TVAS) and Rounds 2-7 are June 29 (11:30 a.m. ET; ESPN+, NHLN, SN, SN1).

Players will wear UTAH on their chest throughout next season as part of an identity that will include jerseys in Rock Black, Salt White and Mountain Blue. Fan voting to decide among six finalists for a permanent name is open until Thursday ( https://segmedia.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bIPN5lOSijGkaFM ), which will launch prior to the start of the 2025-26 season.

He scored one goal in 13 playoff games to help Brynas win the league championship and had 22 points (10 goals, 22 assists) in 15 games for Brynas Jr. in J20 Nationell, the highest-level junior ice hockey league in Sweden.

Nordh, a native of Soderhamn, was a third-round pick (No. 72) of the Arizona Coyotes in the 2023 NHL Draft and had 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists) in 38 games for Brynas Jr. in 2022-23. His five points (three goals, two assists) in five games helped Sweden win a silver medal at the 2023 IIHF U18 World Championship.

The NHL and Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) on June 13 officially closed on an agreement that established an NHL franchise in Utah and unveiled its identity for the 2024-25 season that will include jerseys in Rock Black, Salt White and Mountain Blue. Players will wear UTAH on their chest throughout the season and fan voting to decide among six finalists for a permanent name is open until Thursday (https://segmedia.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bIPN5lOSijGkaFM). After the final name selection, creative and uniform development will take place. The team's full identity will launch prior to the start of the 2025-26 season.

The Utah Hockey Club has the No. 6 pick in the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft at Sphere in Las Vegas. The first round is June 28 (7 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, TVAS) and Rounds 2-7 are June 29 (11:30 a.m. ET; ESPN+, NHLN, SN, SN1).

Julian Lutz, a 20-year-old forward chosen by the Coyotes in the second round (No. 43) of the 2022 NHL Draft, also signed a three-year, entry-level contract. His 68 points (24 goals, 44 assists) led Green Bay of the United States Hockey League and ranked 12th among all players.

{coyotes} Utah Hockey Club officially joins NHL, unveils uniforms, logos

The Utah Hockey Club has officially joined the NHL.

Nearly two months after the NHL Board of Governors approved the establishment of a franchise beginning with the 2024-25 season in Utah, Smith Entertainment Group, led by Ryan and Ashley Smith, on Thursday formally closed its transactions -- announced on April 18 -- establishing the Utah Hockey Club.

"Today is a monumental day for the state of Utah as we officially close on the establishment of a new NHL franchise," said Ryan Smith, governor of Utah Hockey Club and chairman of Smith Entertainment Group. "The NHL has been incredible to work with throughout this process, providing us with invaluable guidance and support. We have a ton of work to do -- training camp starts in less than 100 days -- and could not be more excited about what's to come."

Said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman: "On behalf of the Board of Governors, I am delighted to officially welcome Utah to the National Hockey League. Congratulations to Ryan and Ashley Smith, their entire organization, the state of Utah and the fans as the Club continues its exciting march toward puck drop in October."

The first post from the team under the handle @UtahHockeyClub contained a hype video.

Other posts included the team's uniforms, logos and color schemes for its first season.

According to a press release, the color palette consists of rock black, representing the darkness of night in the mountains and the volcanic rock of Utah's deserts; salt white, illustrating both the snow on Utah's peaks and the famous salt flats; and mountain blue, a representation of Utah's rich winter sports history and its clear skies for more than 230 days a year. The distinctive colors will establish the cornerstone of the club's brand as it evolves through the team's name selection ahead of the 2025-26 NHL season. The selected color palette for Utah's first NHL team is also intentionally complementary to that of the Utah Jazz -- also owned by SEG -- whose expanded colors were introduced last week and include a similar sky blue as a tertiary color.

The Utah Hockey Club's home uniform will be rock black with UTAH across the chest in stairstep lettering and feature salt white and mountain blue striping across each arm, the bottom of the jersey, and on the socks. The team's away uniform will be salt white with UTAH across the chest in the same stairstep lettering. The away jersey will feature rock black and mountain blue striping. The inclusion of stairstep lettering, two-ply twill, zig-zag stitchdown appliqué, and triple striping on sleeves and socks complete the image of an emerging club steeped in the traditions of hockey's heritage.

It also launched its website, UtahHockeyClub.com, and its social media channels -- @UtahHockeyClub -- on X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn.

The team could have a new name for the 2025-26 season, with a fan vote narrowing the choices down to six: Utah Blizzard, Utah Hockey Club (Utah HC), Utah Mammoth, Utah Outlaws, Utah Venom and Utah Yeti.

The voting is open until June 20. Details on the final steps in the name selection process will be announced in the coming months.

utah-logo-2024

Ryan and Ashley Smith, who purchased the contracts of Arizona Coyotes executives, coaches and players, will have the team play at Delta Center in Salt Lake City, home of the Jazz since 1991-92.

The Arizona franchise is inactive after playing in the Greater Phoenix area since relocating from Winnipeg for the 1996-97 season.

The Utah Hockey Club currently has the No. 6 selection in the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft, which will be held at Sphere in Las Vegas. The first round is June 28 (7 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, TVAS) and rounds 2-7 are June 29 (11:30 a.m. ET; ESPN+, NHLN, SN, SN1).

Utah general manager Bill Armstrong told NHL.com at the Scouting Combine earlier this month that nothing has changed in how the hockey operations department is approaching the draft.

"I think that's one of the reasons that they brought everybody from the hockey ops, is to keep the process the same," Armstrong said. "I think our staff has done a tremendous job at acquiring prospects and going through the draft and just accumulating a good mass of prospects in a short period of time. So, I think they're excited about the process that we've developed here and the talent, not only that we've drafted but also in our staff that allows us to kind of feed the engine every year."

Defenseman could be an area Utah focuses on at No. 6, with Sam Dickinson of London of the Ontario Hockey League, Carter Yakemchuk of Calgary of the Western Hockey League, Zeev Buium of the University of Denver, Zayne Parekh of Saginaw of the OHL and Stian Solberg of Valerenga in Norway among potential options.

{coyotes} Capitals reach agreement to purchase CapFriendly website

--

It won't happen until July, but according to multiple sources, the Washington Capitals have reached an agreement to purchase the outstanding CapFriendly website.

These same sources stressed that both the Capitals and CapFriendly wanted the site to be publicly available and independently operated through the 2024 NHL Draft and the start of free agency, so it is not expected the sale will be official until at least July 5.

Neither the team nor CapFriendly representatives would comment. Dominik Zrim, the website's co-owner and director, has worked in the NHL for Chicago and San Jose.

NHL teams that had agreements to use their tools/Application Programming Interface (API) recently received notice that these contracts would be terminated. This led to speculation that one club was buying the site, and all information pointed to the Capitals.

You can definitely see why a team would want this infrastructure. After the transaction officially closes, the website will go dark.

CapFriendly arrived in 2015, after its predecessor, CapGeek, closed. CapGeek's creator, Matthew Wuest, who built an indispensable site, died of colon cancer in March 2015. CapFriendly became an excellent substitute for fans and media.
