Arizona Coyotes employees accused the NHL franchise of spying on staff, squashing their attempts to organize a union and firing employees who raised concerns about pay, according to a report by The Arizona Republic.
The U.S. National Labor Relations Board launched two investigations into the franchise since October 2016, according to the Republic, which cites federal records.
The Coyotes reportedly reached a settlement earlier this year with one employee, causing one labour case to be withdrawn.
The team was accused of the following in a charge document from that since settled case.
Issuing discipline and discharging its employee (name redacted) because (they) concertedly complained on behalf of other employees regarding the Employer failing to properly pay its employees. The above-named Employer also maintained overly-broad and discriminatory rules, including but not limited to, overly-broad and discriminatory rules in its Employee handbook and severance agreement.
An amended charge later added more details, accusing the club of:
1) Creating the impression that its employees' protected, concerted activities were under surveillance; (2) promulgating overly-broad and discriminatory directives prohibiting its employees from engaging in concerted activities; (3) threatening its employees with unspecified reprisals because they engaged in concerted activities.
The Coyotes have denied all allegations and face a Jan. 9 hearing before a labour board judge on the second investigation.
"We have worked hard to create an excellent workplace culture for more than 100 employees," Ahron Cohen, the Coyotes' general counsel and chief operating officer, told the Republic. "We are proud of that culture, which is based on respect and fair treatment for all employees. Any allegations to the contrary are not true."
