The Arizona Coyotes are offering fans an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at general manager John Chayka's preparation ahead of the 2018 NHL Draft.
The 16-minute video gives fans a little bit of everything, including much sought after trade negotiations.
Early in the video, Chayka appears to be on the phone with Buffalo Sabres general manager Jason Botterill, discussing a deal centred around Sabres forward Hudson Fasching. The deal would later come to fruition, with the Sabres dealing Fasching to the Coyotes for Brandon Hickey and Mike Sislo.
Chayka mentions speaking with Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford about on-going negotiations, but doesn't hint at what exactly he was referencing. Chayka mentions Sabres forward Ryan O'Reilly by name, although the discussions don't seem to lead anywhere. O'Reilly was later dealt to the St. Louis Blues in a blockbuster deal.
Fans also get a glimpse of Day 1 of the 2018 draft. The Coyotes take us inside the team's draft room, and the hockey operations department discusses prospects Brady Tkachuk and Barrett Hayton. Then the Coyotes head on stage for the fifth overall selection, where they select Hayton of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
"He's going to be a beast. He killed the combine," Chayka says. Chayka speaks about what Hayton will bring to the Coyotes, and then the young forward talks about his emotions after his name was called.
Wayne Gretzky makes an appearance and he's introduced to Hayton and offers the young player his congratulations.
The video finishes off with a look at the Coyotes development camp.
