{coyotes} Sept. 17: NHL Preseason Roundup

 

Max Jones had a goal and an assist for the Anaheim Ducks in a 4-3 win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Tuesday.

It was the first preseason game for each team.

Devin Shore, Nicolas Deslauriers and Adam Henrique also scored for Anaheim. Ryan Miller allowed two goals on 11 shots in 30:09 for Anaheim, and Anthony Stolarz made 14 saves.

Jones scored the go-ahead goal on the power play at 6:43 of the third period to make it 4-3.

Timo Meier, Jonny Brodzinski and Joachim Blichfeld scored for San Jose. Aaron Dell made 11 saves in 30:09, and Josef Korenar allowed three goals on 13 shots in relief.

Meier scored 1:24 into the game to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Joe Thornton had an assist.

Brodzinski made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 10:47 of the first.

The Ducks rallied with three goals in the second. Shore scored at 5:53 to make it 2-1, Deslauriers tied it 2-2 at 12:39, and Henrique gave Anaheim a 3-2 lead at 18:40.

Blichfeld tied it 3-3 at 2:55 of the third.

 

Kuemper, Hill combine for 26 saves, Coyotes shut out Kings

Conor Garland scored two goals for the Arizona Coyotes in a 5-0 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center in the second split-squad game between the teams Tuesday.

Darcy Kuemper made 16 saves for Arizona, and Adin Hill made 10 in relief for the combined shutout.

Clayton Keller, Christian Dvorak and Jordan Gross also scored.

Starter Jonathan Quick allowed three goals on 10 shots, and Cal Petersen made 13 saves on 15 shots in relief.

 

Thomas has goal, assist for Kings in win against Coyotes

Akil Thomas had a goal and an assist, and the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Arizona Coyotes 4-1 at Gila River Arena.

It was the first of two split-squad games between the teams Tuesday, and the first preseason game for Los Angeles.

Thomas scored at 9:43 of the second period to give the Kings a 3-1 lead and set up Samuel Fagemo to make it 4-1 at 12:23. Michael Amadio put Los Angeles ahead 2-1 at 4:26 of the second.

Mikey Anderson gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at 5:36 of the first period on the power play before Derek Stepan tied it 1-1 at 3:30 of the second.

 

Canucks rally past Oilers with three goals in third

The Vancouver Canucks scored three straight goals in the third period to rally for a 4-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Arena.

After Elias Pettersson tied it 2-2 at 9:39, Brandon Sutter gave the Canuck a 3-2 lead at 10:58 with his second goal of the night. Tanner Pearson scored into an empty net with 42 seconds left for the 4-2 final.

Vancouver rookie defenseman Quinn Hughes left the game as a precaution at 7:53 of the third. He was hit in the face with a high stick in the first period.

Tomas Jurco and Patrick Russell scored for the Oilers.

Thatcher Demko made 35 saves for Vancouver. Shane Starrett made 20 for Edmonton.

 

Pirri scores twice, Sparks gets shutout for Golden Knights against Avalanche

Brandon Pirri scored two power-play goals and had an assist, and Garret Sparks made 23 saves in the Vegas Golden Knights' 5-0 win against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center.

It was the first preseason game for the Avalanche.

Valentin Zykov had a goal and an assist, and Nicolas Hague and Nicolas Roy scored for the Golden Knights. Tomas Nosek had two assists.

Adam Werner made 11 saves on 13 shots for Colorado, and Hunter Miska made 12 saves on 15 shots in relief.

The Avalanche were 0-for-5 on the power play.

 

Stars defeat Wild on Dowling OT goal

Justin Dowling scored 3:35 into overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 2-1 win against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center.

Roope Hintz gave the Stars a 1-0 lead on the power play with 40 seconds left in the first period. Starter Landon Bow made 18 saves on 19 shots for Dallas, and Colton Point made the save on all 13 shots he faced in relief.

Ryan Hartman scored a shorthanded goal at 14:43 of the second period to tie it for the Wild, who played their first preseason game. Hartman was traded to the Stars by the Philadelphia Flyers on June 24 but didn't receive a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent, making him an unrestricted free agent, and he signed a two-year contract with Minnesota on July 1.

Alex Stalock made 19 saves on 21 shots for the Wild.

 

Rasmussen goal in third boosts Red Wings to win against Blackhawks

Michael Rasmussen broke a tie with 4:37 remaining in the third period, and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 at Little Caesars Arena.

It was the first preseason game for the Red Wings.

Rasmussen scored on the power play when his backhand deflected in off Blackhawks defenseman Carl Dahlstrom.

Matt Puempel, Matthew Ford, Chris Terry and Luke Glendening (empty net) scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made seven saves on eight shots for the Red Wings, and Calvin Pickard made 15 saves on 17 shots in relief.

Dominik Kubalik scored twice, and Philip Holm had a goal and an assist for Chicago.

Starter Robin Lehner made 15 saves on 17 shots in his Blackhawks debut, and Kevin Lankinen made 19 saves on 21 shots.

The teams will play again at United Center in Chicago on Wednesday (8:30 p.m. ET; NHLN [joined in progress], NBCSCH+, NHL.TV).

 

Marner has assist for Maple Leafs in loss to Senators

Mitchell Marner had an assist for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but Tristan Scherwey scored the go-ahead goal at 10:15 of the third period in the Ottawa Senators' 3-1 win at Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland.

It was the first preseason game for each team.

Marner set up Kasperi Kapanen's goal that tied the game 1-1 at 3:37 of the third after Maxime Lajoie scored in the first period for Ottawa. Scherwey, who had an assist on Lajoie's goal, is in Senators training camp on a professional tryout contract.

Anthony Duclair scored into an empty net with 1:43 remaining for the 3-1 final.

Anders Nilsson made the save on all 13 shots he faced for Ottawa. Marcus Hogberg made 11 saves on 12 shots in relief.

Starter Frederik Andersen made 12 saves on 13 shots for Toronto. Kasimir Kaskisuo allowed one goal on four shots.

 

Jobst's OT goal lifts Islanders past Flyers

Mason Jobst scored at 4:07 of overtime, and the New York Islanders rallied for a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Nassau Coliseum.

Jordan Eberle tied the game 2-2 with 1:34 remaining in the third period, and Derick Brassard also scored for the Islanders. Thomas Greiss allowed one goal on 15 shots in 30:02 for New York. Jared Coreau made 10 saves in relief.

Michael Raffl and Chris Bigras scored, and Carter Hart saved all 14 shots he faced in 30:02. J-F Berube made 20 saves in relief.

Bigras gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead at 8:23 of the third after Brassard tied it 1-1 at 6:52. Raffl scored to make it 1-0 3:30 into the first period.

 

Bemstrom has goal, assist for Blue Jackets in win against Sabres

Emil Bemstrom had a goal and an assist in the Columbus Blue Jackets' 4-1 win against the Buffalo Sabres at Nationwide Arena.

Kole Sherwood, Sonny Milano and Zac Dalpe also scored for Columbus in its first preseason game. Joonas Korpisalo started in goal for the Blue Jackets and saved all 13 shots he faced in 29:27. Matiss Kivlenieks made 17 saves in relief.

Jake McCabe scored, and Linus Ullmark saved 19 of 20 shots in 29:48 for Buffalo. Andrew Hammond made 13 saves.

Bemstrom gave the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead on the power play 52 seconds into the game. McCabe tied it 1-1 at 13:43 of the second, but Sherwood put Columbus back in front 2-1 at 15:48. Milano made it 3-1 at 14:22 of the third, and Dalpe scored into an empty net at 18:34 for the 4-1 final.

 

Reimer, Forsberg combine for 15 saves, Hurricanes blank Lightning

James Reimer and Anton Forsberg combined for a shutout in the Carolina Hurricanes' 3-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena.

It was the first preseason game for each team.

Reimer made eight saves in 31:37, and Forsberg made seven in relief. Scott Wedgewood made 34 saves for the Lightning.

Max McCormick gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead 1:19 into the first period. Lucas Wallmark extended it to 2-0 on the power play at 5:53 of the third before Colin Markison made it 3-0 at 9:55.
