The Arizona Coyotes have submitted a bid to build a new arena in Tempe, Ariz., a suburb east of Phoenix.
The NHL team is entering the final year of tenancy at Gila River Arena in Glendale after the city -- which owns the building -- chose not to renew the team's lease. The team will be officially without an arena as of June 30 of next year. "We are pleased to have submitted a proposal to the City of Tempe. As regulations surrounding the RFP process dictate, we cannot comment any further at this time, but we remain incredibly excited about this extraordinary opportunity," the team said in a statement provided to Craig Morgan of azcoyotesinsider.com Thursday.
According to Paulina Pineda of the Arizona Republic, the Coyotes and city of Tempe have been discussing a potential new event space for at least two years. Thursday was the deadline for developers to submit bids to the city for plans to build a mixed-use development on a partially vacant, 46-acre piece of land in the city's northeast corner. The city announced on Thursday that only one bid -- from the company Bluebird Development, LLC. -- was submitted.
"The City of Tempe anticipates that the next steps in this evaluation process will take many months and will include extensive examinations, as well as opportunities for community feedback," a statement from the city reads.
News of the Coyotes' lease termination immediately sparked speculation about whether the team would be relocated, a concern CEO Xavier A. Gutierrez was quick to dismiss. Thursday's bid to build on the Tempe site, whether it ultimately leads to a new arena or not, at least reaffirms the team's commitment to the state of Arizona.
"The Coyotes are one hundred per cent committed to finding a long-term arena solution here in Arizona, and nothing will shake our determination to do what is right for our organization, residents of the entire Valley and, most important, our fans," Gutierrez said in a statement in August.
