As the visor debate rages on in the hockey world, Wayne Gretzky voiced his opinion Monday and argued that players coming into the National Hockey League should continue to wear visors.
"To me, it makes no common sense whatsoever that kids that grew up wearing full masks and then visors in junior hockey and college hockey, so why these kids would take their masks off … just for safety reasons, there is no reason to take it off," Gretzky told Philadelphia radio station 97.5 The Fanatic Monday morning.
"If I was a parent and a father of one of those kids, I would be telling them there's no reason to take them off."
Gretzky wouldn't go as far as to say whether or not the league should make wearing a visor mandatory, though.
"I don't have an answer to that because I don't play anymore and I always hated when guys would comment about the game when they were retired and weren't playing," Gretzky added.
The resurgence of the visor debate stemmed from an incident involving New York Rangers defenceman Marc Staal, who was struck in the eye with a puck on March 5. Many believe Staal's injury could have been avoided had he been wearing a visor.
Gretzky, who retired following the 1998-99 season, did not wear a visor during his 20-year NHL career.
