RE: [cactuswings 2504] REQ: Ex-Saudi MD90s - Current Status as of Mon 07/Oct/13

Ok, lets give this a bash.

From having visited there 3 times now, I can confirm that all aircraft can be read off from around the various perimeter roads, however you do need a good telescope and an early start before heat haze comes up to read all the aircraft in the middle, before going around the various peri roads to read the rest off. You can reckon on a good 3 to 4 hours to give the place a good going over. Some aircraft (UPS DC-8s for instance will have regs painted out, but they do have numbers on nosewheel doors.

By the various fence lines, you can take shots, though certain areas they will come and check you out and then some may warn you not to take any photo’s, but say that binoculars and telescopes being OK, which for the number crunchers is great.

I took approx. 100 photos and have uploaded them to a drop box and have sent Roy the link.

I only had a 250mm lens but with a longer lens better shots can be taken, but the shots I took were more specific to showing what was there.

The sun rises from the east, and I was positioned at the western end, so I could confirm the numbers of Saudi MD-90’s but usually we start at the eastern side, so that the sun is behind us as we read off, and this makes life easier and we gradually work our way anti-clockwise around the airfield to read off as much as possible.

Each storage base has a slightly different way of approaching it, and I’d be happy to assist anyone else with any of the others – I visited Mojave, Kingman, Goodyear, Roswell, Victorville and did an over-flight of Marana and AMARG on this trip.  Things have changed a clot since my last visit in 2011, but it keeps us interested.

Hope this helps, and if anyone has any further questions, I’d be happy to help further,

Cheers for now,

Andre

Hi All,

Great discussion and exchange of some very valuable information. Since a few have visited Roswell , I was wondering if anybody would be willing to share on this forum what the opportunities are for taking pictures from public roads around and at the airport. Haven't been at Roswell myself I have no idea if any good photo opportunities exist , i.e. direction of the sun , distance in relation to the stored aircraft , obstacles etc. Any information for those among us that take photo's would be very much appreciated and welcome.

Roy
