NHL teams, starting on Monday, get one more chance to get contracts off their books without it counting against their salary cap.

The second compliance buyout period runs through June 30, and 26 teams have at least one buyout available and 16 teams have both available.

New York Rangers center Brad Richards is considered the most likely candidate to be bought out because he has six years at a $6.6 million cap hit left on his contract.

The Rangers chose not to use their remaining compliance buyout on him last summer and he had a 20-goal, 51-point season. After a strong start in the playoffs, he had just one point in the Stanley Cup Final and was bumped to the fourth line.

General manager Glen Sather also has 11 players to sign, including key restricted free agents Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello, and $17 million in cap space, according to capgeek.com. The website bases that number on a suggested $71.1 million cap, though that number likely will be lower.

The two teams with the least amount of cap space - the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks - have already used their two compliance buyouts, as have the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have nine players to sign and $16 million to spend and Carolina Hurricanes have nine players to sign and $18 million to spend.

With the Hurricanes' Anton Khudobin emerging as a viable No. 1 goalie when Cam Ward was hurt, that could make Ward (2 years, $6.3 million cap hit) expendable, though Carolina probably would try the trade route to get something in return.

The Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings have a big unrestricted free agent ticket to re-sign in Marian Gaborik, and there was media speculation during the Final about whether Mike Richards (six years, $5.75 million cap hit) could be a buyout casualty.

Otherwise, no team is in a real salary cap crunch, but teams could always choose to get out of contracts where players aren't producing enough, such as the Buffalo Sabres' Ville Leino.

Teams also are free to use regular buyouts on contracts, but that would count against their salary cap.
