Season series: The Arizona Coyotes won the first meeting of Winnipeg's present team versus its former one in October 2011, but the Winnipeg Jets have won each of the four games played between the franchises since. That includes all three during the 2013-14 season, Winnipeg's first in the Western Conference since moving from Atlanta. Two of the three wins came in shootouts.
Jets team scope: It has been three seasons in Winnipeg without a Stanley Cup Playoff berth, but the Jets had one of the quietest offseasons of any NHL franchise. Mathieu Perreault was their only significant addition, and he is likely to center the third line at the start of the season with converted defenseman Dustin Byfuglien and rookie Adam Lowry. The Jets are banking on improvement from young players such as Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba and a bounce-back season from Evander Kane to help generate more offense. There will be plenty of pressure on Ondrej Pavelec to prove he is not a below-average starting goaltender, because if he doesn't it could be another long season in Manitoba.
Coyotes team scope: The Coyotes have a new first name and a new set of questions about where the offense is going to come from. Arizona's defense should be stout, and the possible permanent addition of Connor Murphy should help the group provide even more offense. Up front is the potential problem area, with two of last season's top-four scoring forwards (Radim Vrbata and Mike Ribeiro) plying their trade elsewhere. Sam Gagner is the only new potential impact player because exciting prospects like Max Domi and Henrik Samuelsson didn't make the roster. After an excellent 2011-12, goaltender Mike Smith has had two mediocre seasons, and the Coyotes will need more from him if they hope to compete for a playoff spot.
