Season series: The Edmonton Oilers wrap up their road trip with the first of five games against the Arizona Coyotes; all five will be played before Christmas. The Coyotes dominated the series in 2013-14, winning four times before a 3-2 home shootout loss on April 3. Keith Yandle led the Coyotes with four goals and seven points. David Perron had five of the Oilers' 14 non-shootout goals. Arizona is 10-0-3 in its past 13 games against Edmonton.
Oilers team scope: About the only consolation the Oilers could take from their 6-1 road loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday was that they avoided being shut out. Matt Hendricks beat Kings goalie Jonathan Quick with less than 21 seconds remaining. They lost goaltender Viktor Fasth, who left after the first period with what coach Dallas Eakins said was a groin injury. Eakins said the Oilers will call up a goaltender from Oklahoma City of the AHL. Defenseman Darnell Nurse, the Oilers' top pick (No. 7) in the 2013 NHL Draft, made his debut and was scoreless with two shots on goal, two hits and a minus-1 rating in 18:04 of ice time. "They're a great team," Nurse said. "You never want to have that kind of result."
Coyotes team scope: Mike Smith will be back in goal for the Coyotes after Devan Dubnyk played in Arizona's 3-2 overtime win against the Kings on Saturday. Smith allowed six goals in Arizona's 6-2 season-opening loss to the Winnipeg Jets, earning criticism from coach Dave Tippett. Dubnyk, a surprise starter against Los Angeles, allowed two early goals but was perfect the rest of the way. "He looked sharp the last two days," Tippett said of Smith after practice Tuesday. Other than the change in goal, Tippett said he doesn't envision any changes. "We have to play the same way [we did against the Kings]," he said. "We did a lot of things structurally that we like to do. Our work ethic was good. We played to our identity, and we want to continue to play that way."
