Something I just discovered fits in nicely with this message. I was looking
through a book that shows pictures of Phoenix between 1870 and 1970 (killing
time while various sites opened) and found a couple of what is now GYR. I
wouldn't have been able to tell you that the two large hangars that are (or
were, at least, at my last visit) still the centerpieces of the MRO facility
were there as far back as when it was Litchfield Naval Air Facility. They
are clearly in a photo dated 1955, when there was still a 'boneyard' of
retired WW2 aircraft. As I'm sure I've said more than once, I remember
seeing the parked aircraft as we drove to San Diego for vacation, probably
several times. I would have been 6 in '55 so I might not have taken notice
that early but like good Zonies, we went San Diego more summers than not so
I would have had other opportunities.
