Season series: The Calgary Flames swept five games from the Arizona Coyotes last season. Forward Jiri Hudler and defenseman Dennis Wideman each had seven points to lead Calgary, and goaltenders Karri Ramo, Jonas Hiller and Joni Ortio each had at least one win. Arizona defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson had two points.
Flames team scope: Ramo, recalled from Stockton of the American Hockey League on Oct. 29, is expected to make his 12th consecutive start. Hiller (lower body) has been activated off injured reserve and is expected to back up Ramo after missing 12 games. With Hiller healthy, Calgary assigned Ortio to Stockton after he cleared waivers Thursday. The Flames started the season with all three goaltenders on the roster. "Three goalies, as much as you want to analyze it, there's not enough work for the three and there's always one that is kind of not getting any work," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "It's set now." Calgary recalled forward Markus Granlund from Stockton on Thursday. He and Hudler, who missed the past two games because of an illness, are expected to play against the Coyotes.
Coyotes team scope: Arizona did not practice Thursday. Captain Shane Doan missed a 4-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday because of a lower-body injury, but coach Dave Tippett is hopeful Doan can return Friday against the Flames. "I think it's a day-by-day thing," Tippett said after the game. "We will give him a day off [Thursday], and he'll skate maybe, hopefully Friday morning, and we will see where he is at." Doan has six goals, including three in his past five games, and trails Dale Hawerchuk by five for the most in Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise history. Dustin Jeffrey, recalled Tuesday from Springfield of the AHL, dressed in Doan's place Wednesday.
