Season series: The San Jose Sharks have won two of three games against the Arizona Coyotes this season. The Coyotes' victory came at Gila River Arena on Thursday, when Arizona captain Shane Doan scored the game-winning goal with 1:31 remaining in the third period of a 3-1 victory.
Coyotes team scope: Arizona heads to San Jose after a 2-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Gila River Arena on Saturday that ended the Coyotes' three-game winning streak. Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson is questionable; he's missed the past five games because of a shoulder injury. Ekman-Larsson leads the Coyotes with 30 assists and 49 points. Goalie Mike Smith is scheduled to start after Louis Domingue stopped 34 of 35 shots on Saturday. Smith is 2-0-0 after returning from an injury that kept him out for three months. "We're happy to have two strong goaltenders, but if you don't score you can't win," forward Martin Hanzal told the Coyotes website.
Sharks team scope: It's the second of a six-game homestand for San Jose, which defeated the New York Rangers 4-1 on Saturday. The victory moved the Sharks within two points of the Anaheim Ducks for second place in the Pacific Division. San Jose could be without defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who is day-to-day and did not play Saturday because of a lower-body injury. "Anytime he's out, you're concerned," coach Peter DeBoer told CSN Bay Area. "He's a key guy for us. I guess the silver lining is it's better to have this now than three or four weeks from now. The good news is it's not long-term, so he will be back." Forward Matt Nieto also missed the game after blocking a shot with his hand against the Coyotes. He is day-to-day. Goalie James Reimer is likely to start after Martin Jones made 25 saves Saturday.
