Defenseman Luke Schenn signed a two-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday.
Terms were not released, but Sportsnet reported the contract was worth $2.5 million.
"We are very pleased to sign Luke to a two-year contract," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said. "He's a good, young defenseman and we feel we can optimize his performance here. He will be a solid addition to our blue line."
Schenn, 26, had four goals and 12 assists for the Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings last season, and was an unrestricted free agent.
Selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the fifth pick of the 2008 NHL Draft, he has 128 points (28 goals, 100 assists) in 566 career games in the League.
Recognized for his durability, the 6-foot-2, 229-pound Schenn has played at least 70 games in six of his eight seasons in the NHL.
Schenn's play picked up after he was acquired by the Los Angeles Kings from the Philadelphia Flyers Jan. 6. His size and defensive skills played much better with the Kings than they did with the Flyers, who rely more on a skating game, which isn't Schenn's strength.
At his best, Schenn is a shutdown defenseman who takes the man, loves to hit, plays positionally well, and is more than willing to block shots. He can make a good first pass out of his zone, has enough skating ability to recover if he's beaten and plays a physical game without taking a lot of penalties.
His limitations come on the offensive side -- he's never had more than five goals or 22 points in a season. Though Schenn has a heavy shot from the point, he lacks the kind of offensive instincts that would give him a higher ceiling than simply being a shutdown defenseman.
Schenn quickly found a comfort zone after the trade from Philadelphia and delivered the kind of hockey the Kings needed him to play -- smart and simple. Though he'll never be a star, he's an asset for any team that doesn't ask him to do more than he's capable of doing.
