WASHINGTON -- Mike Richards scored a disputed game-winning goal, his first in more than a year, and the Washington Capitals beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Monday night.
Alex Ovechkin put Washington ahead with his league-leading 39th goal of the season and had an assist.
Evgeny Kuznetsov also had a goal and an assist for NHL-best Washington, which won its fourth straight and ninth in its last 10 games. Braden Holtby made 25 stops for his league-leading 38th win.
Defensemen Connor Murphy and Kevin Connauton scored for Arizona, which began a five-game East Coast road trip with its second consecutive loss.
Louis Domingue made 31 saves for the Coyotes, who managed only two shots on goal over six failed power-play opportunities.
But Arizona still had a chance to get to overtime without Richards' first goal since signing with the Caps in January.
Only seconds after Ovechkin's goal made it 2-1, Domingue appeared to have the puck covered with a glove in his crease when Washington's Tom Wilson reached a stick in to poke it away.
It found Richards, who rifled home Washington's second goal in 26 seconds.
As a scuffle ensued on the boards behind the glass, Domingue slammed his stick on his crossbar. Coyotes coach Dave Tippett challenged the goal, but it stood.
A minute later, Murphy's slap shot from the right found the top left corner. The Coyotes pulled Domingue late and had a 6-on-4 for the final 29.6 seconds after Nicklas Backstrom was whistled for tripping, but couldn't break through.

Coyotes D Oliver Ekman-Larsson returned after missing most of Saturday's loss to St. Louis with a lower-body injury. ... Capitals LW Marcus Johansson was scratched because of an illness, missing his eighth game of the season. ... Trotz started his third line of Richards, LW Jason Chimera, RW Tom Wilson, and Ds Dmitry Orlov and Brooks Orpik. . Orpik's next NHL game will be the 800th of his career. ... Arizona hosts Washington on April 2 to close the two-game season series.
