Season series: David Backes' second career four-goal game highlighted the St. Louis Blues' 6-0 victory against the Arizona Coyotes when the teams played on Jan. 6. Brian Elliott had 23 saves. Paul Stastny had a goal and an assist. The Blues will be looking for the season sweep, having outscored the Coyotes 12-1 in two games. Backes and Jaden Schwartz have combined for nine goals in two games.

Coyotes team scope: Antoine Vetmette's shootout goal in the third round was the difference for the Coyotes, who ended a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. Vermette's third-period goal put the Coyotes ahead 2-1. Shane Doan scored a power play goal in the second period. Lucas Lessio scored in the first round of the shootout, and goalie Mike Smith stopped Patrick Sharp to preserve the win; he made 36 saves, including a sprawling stop of Andrew Shaw in the waning seconds of overtime that needed video review. The Coyotes announced on Monday they recalled goalie Mike McKenna and assigned goalie Louis Domingue to the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League.

Blues team scope: St. Louis will play their eighth game in 13 days when they play Arizona on Tuesday. The Blues are 7-0-1 in the past eight games against the Coyotes since last losing to them April 6, 2012. The Blues lost their second game in a row on Sunday, a 4-2 loss to the Blackhawks, after going 12-0-1 for a franchise-record 13 straight games with a point. Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the fourth time in five games and leads the Blues with 28 goals. Backes scored his 18th of the season. "We lost a close, hard-fought hockey game," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "It was a helluva hockey game. That's how I look at this game. We'll rest up and move on to Tuesday."
