TORONTO – The National Hockey League (NHL®) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) announced today the appointment of German Ice Hockey Federation President Franz Reindl to the position of President/Team Leader and former Slovakia team captain Miroslav Satan as General Manager of Team Europe for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Reindl and Satan will select the playing roster, coaching and support staff and subsequently oversee all tournament preparations and management for Team Europe, a pan-European roster of players from birth countries outside of the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden – that is, all of the other European countries who are developing world-class hockey players in ever-increasing numbers. Players from Reindl and Satan's home countries of Germany and Slovakia, respectively, will be eligible for selection, plus many others that include Austria, Belarus, Denmark, France, Latvia, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland.
The Garmisch-Partenkirchen native was a high-scoring forward in the Bundesliga for 16 seasons with hometown club SC Riessersee and Rosenheim from 1972-73 through 1987-88 and skated for the national team at eight World Championships and three Olympic Winter Games (1976, 1980 and 1984), winning a bronze medal at the Innsbruck Games in 1976. He also represented West Germany at the 1984 Canada Cup.
After his playing career, Reindl was head coach at SC Riessersee for three seasons and has worked in several administrative and coaching roles with the German Ice Hockey Federation since 1991. He served on the management team for Team Germany at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and was the team's Head Coach and General Manager at the 2004 World Cup.
Satan announced his retirement from a distinguished playing career following the 2014 IIHF World Championship, leaving the game as a Stanley Cup® champion, two-time NHL All-Star and among the most prolific and decorated players in Slovak hockey history.
Selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round (111th overall) of the NHL Draft™ in 1993 – the same year Slovakia became an independent nation following the separation of Czechoslovakia – Satan played 1,050 NHL regular-season games over 14 seasons from 1995 96 to 2009-10, tallying 363-372—735 with the Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins.
He also notched 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists) in 86 playoff games, winning the Stanley Cup® with the Penguins in 2009.
On the international stage, the Topolcany native finished his career as Slovakia's all-time scoring leader at the IIHF World Championship (37-38—75), playing on all four of the country's medal teams – silver in 2000, gold in 2002, bronze in 2003 and silver in 2012. Satan also was a four-time Olympian (1994, 2002, 2006 and 2010) and two-time World Cup of Hockey participant (1996 and 2004).
The World Cup of Hockey returns in September 2016 in Toronto, where eight teams, comprised of the world's best hockey players, will compete for a best-on-best international hockey championship. The World Cup of Hockey is a joint effort of the NHLPA and the NHL, in cooperation with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It is expected that more than 150 of the best players in the NHL will participate in this tournament.
