{coyotes} Roenick to coach at All-American Prospects Game

United States Hockey Hall of Fame member Jeremy Roenick and Stanley Cup champion Derek Plante will coach the teams at the CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game on Sept. 24 in Buffalo, USA Hockey announced Tuesday.

The game, which will be played at First Niagara Center, will feature 42 of the top United States-born prospects for the 2016 NHL Draft.

Roenick, the eighth pick of the 1988 NHL Draft, is fourth among U.S.-born NHL players with 513 goals and 1,216 points. He played 1,363 games in 20 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks. He currently works as a studio analyst for NBC Sports.

Assisting Roenick will be Chris Luongo, an assistant coach for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program under-18 team.

Plante, an eighth-round pick (No. 161) of the Buffalo Sabres in the 1989 draft, had 96 goals and 248 points in 450 games with the Sabres, Dallas Stars, Blackhawks and Flyers. He had one goal in six games in the 1999 Stanley Cup Playoffs to help the Stars win the Cup.

Danton Cole, the coach for USA Hockey's NTDP under-18 team, will assist Plante.

Players for the game were selected by USA Hockey in conjunction with NHL Central Scouting.

Center Auston Matthews, considered the front-runner to be the first pick of the 2016 draft, was not invited to the game. He is playing this season with ZSC in Switzerland's top professional league; their season starts Sept. 9.

"This game provides the best U.S. players eligible for next year's NHL draft the opportunity to showcase their skills on a national stage," said Jim Johannson, USA Hockey's assistant executive director of hockey operations.
