Season series: The Arizona Coyotes swept two games from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013-14. Mike Smith made 23 saves to get the win in the Penguins' most recent visit to Gila River Arena, on Feb. 1, 2014.

Penguins team scope: Pittsburgh had a scheduled day off Friday and will not hold a morning skate Saturday. The Penguins are on a four-game losing streak, a stretch that includes a 2-1 road loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday. Pittsburgh has allowed the first goal in each of the four losses and has scored twice during the skid. The Penguins have been outscored 15-4 since taking a 4-0 lead in a 6-4 victory against the Edmonton Oilers on March 12. They will again be without center Evgeni Malkin (lower-body injury), who hasn't played since last Saturday, as well as forward Patric Hornqvist (undisclosed).

Coyotes team scope: Arizona is trying to end a losing streak of its own. The Coyotes have dropped six in a row (0-5-1), including a 5-2 home loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday. They are 1-6-1 in March and 1-15-1 in their past 17 games. Arizona recalled forward Justin Hodgman from Portland of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis Friday. Forward Martin Erat left the game against Colorado in the first period with an upper-body injury, didn't return and was not on the ice at practice Friday, though coach Dave Tippett didn't rule him out. Smith is expected to play after rookie Louis Domingue got the start against the Avalanche.
