GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Coyotes and some of Arizona's best athletes in other sports honored Shane Doan in a pregame ceremony Thursday for becoming the franchise's all-time leading goal-scorer.
Celebrating "Doan 380 Night," signifying Doan's record-breaking 380th goal, the crowd at Gila River Arena watched a video montage of Doan's milestone goals, along with video messages from Dale Hawerchuk, Coyotes Ring of Honor member Jeremy Roenick and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
Doan, who has played all 20 seasons of his NHL career with the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise (19 in Arizona), passed Hawerchuk for the most goals in franchise history on Dec 31. Doan, who has 384 goals, entered the game against the San Jose Sharks one power-play goal behind Hawerchuk's franchise record of 122 and seven points from Hawerchuk's record of 929.
"I want to congratulate Shane on being the all-time goal-scorer for the franchise," said Fitzgerald, who will play in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. "Next is the points. We'll be watching."
Coyotes alternate captains Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Martin Hanzal gave Doan a special-edition watch from his teammates. General manager Don Maloney presented Doan with a painting by Toronto artist David Arrigo featuring Doan in the various Jets and Coyotes uniforms he has worn over his 20 seasons.
Coyotes President and CEO Anthony LeBlanc announced the creation of a Shane Doan Arizona Youth Hockey Fund in honor of Doan's contributions to growing the sport in Arizona. The Coyotes made an initial donation of $100,000.
Congratulatory videos from longtime Coyotes defenseman Teppo Numminen, Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and former Diamondbacks outfielder Luis Gonzalez were played during a break midway through the first period.
The first 5,000 fans received "Doan 380" bobbleheads before the game. The Halkirk, Alberta, native, who owns a ranch outside of Phoenix, is decked out in a cowboy hat and boots and is holding a lasso.
